First, yes, there are differences and yes, you must stay with DPMS/SR25 style. Only 300 yards? (Not that that's a bad thing!) 16" barrel will cover you fine, they all come with a gas port already drilled, and yes, I highly recommend a brake!

At that stage you need to have an idea of a look, or of an idea of what it'll be for final use….. strictly bench gun? Something to be carried around? Heck, a properly built 16" gun can reach out to 600 yards if you got the eyes/ glass to do so! Also, how about a budget? We love helping to spend money, but you should be ready and this will help, especially to not… heheh…. overspend. Remember to keep glass out of that budget or separate.
