Aznative Posted January 30, 2016 Report Posted January 30, 2016 Hello and I'm glad I found this site. I'm having extraction problems on a custom built Armalite AR-10B chambered in 243 winchester. I purchased the parts for this build right about the same time DPMS and others started building 308 ARs. At that time Armalite dominated the market. I estimate this rifle has 500-700 rounds through it and it started throwing the fired case partially out and the bullet being feed from the magazine would get jammed and even bent in the barrel extension. I have a picture of a round where the case flipped 180 degrees and lodged between the bolt face and the extraction port with a bolt from a different AR10 I purchased both a go and a nogo headspace gauge before swapping the bolts and it still jammed using factory ammunition instead of my usual reloads. I just purchased from Armalite an adjustable gas block, an extractor kit, and new gas rings. I have two questions: First is this the best place to post a diagnosis question? Secondly, in the extractor kit there is a very small plastic rod that isn't even listed with a part number but shows up in the picture at Armalite's web site and was included in my kit. . What is the plastic rod used for? The only thing I can think of is maybe an alignment dowel used just during assembly. Thanks to all respondents. '
planeflyer21 Posted January 30, 2016 Report Posted January 30, 2016 Welcome from AZ Aznative! Where abouts are you located? Contrary to popular belief, us Arizonans dominate the forum here. The best place for diagnostic questions is in the brand subforum, for Armalite AR-10B here: http://forum.308ar.com/forum/97-armalite-ar-10/The Armalite guys may know what the plastic rod is (or Tom...is it purple?). Pics help.
Aznative Posted January 30, 2016 Author Report Posted January 30, 2016 Thanks for the correct forum. I live near Sportsman Warehouse at I-17 and the 101 loop. What part of Arizona do you live?
Aznative Posted January 30, 2016 Author Report Posted January 30, 2016 Also, here is a link to Armalite's picture of the extractor kit showing the plastic part:https://armalite.com/shop/ar-10-extractor-replacement-kit/

ChaseFan9 Posted January 30, 2016 Report Posted January 30, 2016 Welcome from Ga, I hope you can find a solution to your problem. That flipped casing blew my mind the first time I saw it
jtallen83 Posted January 31, 2016 Report Posted January 31, 2016 Secondly, in the extractor kit there is a very small plastic rod that isn't even listed with a part number but shows up in the picture at Armalite's web site and was included in my kit. . What is the plastic rod used for? The only thing I can think of is maybe an alignment dowel used just during assembly. Thanks to all respondents. The rod in question goes inside the spring. It adds some tension and is supposed to help with reliability and spring life. It can be a real bear getting everything together and the pin in when it is new but after a few 100 rounds it gets easier.
survivalshop Posted January 31, 2016 Report Posted January 31, 2016 I would find an Ejector Spring & maybe an Ejector also , Since you have the Extractor/Spring , try it first. Might be all it is . I have had them go both ways , Ejector/Spring or Extractor /Spring or all of them to repair this type of issue . I would also make sure your Gas Block is with in spec's , not loose or moved .
Rsquared Posted February 2, 2016 Report Posted February 2, 2016 Welcome aboard Aznative. As SS said, go ahead and replace what you have to begin with. Then move on to the ejector. As many of us have learned, try to only fix one thing at a time. Believe it or not, sometimes it can get worse if you just start swapping a bunch of parts at one time. Then, you're really chasing problems. We're here to help my man.
