First post-build help!

Hey guys this is my first post, but I have been having some problems troubleshooting my 308 build, so hopefully you guys can help.

i have an SSA upper with a brownells BCG and a Red X arms 308 barrel **GASP** I know most people think red x is garbage, but it's the barrel I got.

So the problems I have been having is when I use 308 ammo (as opposed to 7.62x51) in which the round is not feeding properly.  It seems as though the bullet gets stuck halfway into the chamber when the BCG tries to feed the round.  This happens every 2 or 3 rounds shot.  I tried multiple different types of ammo including Remington Core Lokt, PMC Bronze, and Perfecta, all same problem.  However, when I tried American eagle 7.62x51, I went trough the entire 20 round box without issue.  The 308 rounds eject forward of 90 degrees and have scrape marks on the casing (in the shape of a 1cm by 0.5cm rectangle, more or less) while the 7.62 was ejecting behind 90 degrees.

One round mag test is successful.  When I try manually cycling the bolt, it seems to have the feeding issue also, so that makes me think it is the barrel since I eliminated the possibility of it being gas related.

if you need any more info, or need pictures please let me know.  I appreciate any input. Thanks!

It is Gen 3.  Does it matter that the mag is for 7.62x51? I don't know if they have separate Mags for 7.62 and 308

Try to find a DPMS mag. or try to find a early LR 308 PMag  , some have had issues with the Gen 3 with the Bolt stop , because the Mag's Follower isn't going high enough to engage the Bolt Stop , who knows what other issues it could cause in some 308AR's .

Its worth a try to use different Mags . , also might want to inspect the feed ramp , make sure there is a smooth transition for the Cartridge to feed with out it being bumped up out of the normal feed path . Since the Ball ammo is feeding , the feed ramps would be a good place to look .

One thing at a time, try a different Mag first , in my measurements of different mags ,the DPMS & Lancer L7's set the cartridge the highest in the the mag well & a little higher of an angle , may be all that is needed for the rifle to feed reliably .

Flavo get you a lancer mag or two...then you will know the mag isnt the problem !

But you have answered your own question in your post

after reading reviews of your barrel I tend to agree with you         Wash

The American Eagle 7.62x51 ball is working in the Barrel , so that leaves two things , Magazine ( which is 90% of feeding issues on most weapons ) & the feed ramp , which may not like the Bullet configuration of the commercial ammo .

Yes you will pay big $$ for a Lancer L7 , but its a good choice , there has been several issues with the latest PMag , I had to send two brand new Gen. 3 ones back , because they had issues with fitment & were causing feeding issues . They were some of the first off the new assembly plant & the replacements sent to me work fine .

From the research I've done, it seems as though 308 is hotter  than 7.62, which was supported by the 1-2 o'clock ejection of 308 and 7 o'clock ejection of 7.62.........is it possible that the 308 round is running the action too fast which is causing FTFs?  If that's the case an adjustable gas block would be the cure.

A heavier buffer would also be a good option in the event that it's cycling too quickly.
