Any experience with the variety of Sub $100 handguards found on eBay. There seem to be several types of attachment:

1. Clamp to barrel nut, handguard is split and has 2-4 clamping bolts.

2. Bolt to barrel nut, 2 Button Head Cap Screws each, at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions

3. Thread on to barrel nut, external threads on the barrel nut, internal threads on the hand guard, plus a locking ring

4. Wedge system, similar to clamping (hand guard not split) except two wedged from each side with SHCS, handguard has some sort of slots.

Any favorites or failures?

  For a 308AR ?

I would buy a Hand Guard from a reputable manufacturer & source , I don't care for Fleebay , you never know where its from or what its made for . Just remember , you get what you pay for .

I have one of these on my long range precision upper. Though it's not "tacticool" and doesn't have a bunch of rails attached for everything and the kitchen sink... it's sub $100 and from a great manufacturer.

For a few dollars more, you can get this one...

or this one...

I installed one of those guntec rails on a friends rifle. It uses shims to time the nut. It was a PITA to get it lined up. Never doing that again.

Made right here in Phx, brother - shim systems have been around for quite awhile, and Geissele perfected it. Priceless directions for timing it, from them. I only have three GunTec pieces, myself.  I've had their AR armorer's wrnch for 10 years, and I haven't been able to break it - that says something.  I can break an anvil in a sandpit.  :lmao:  I have their billet 5.56 upper receiver and their 15" rail - timed with shims.  Both of those are great pieces.

The GunTec parts might go for cheap once in awhile, but they are USA (Phoenix) made, and shouldn't be lumped in with chinese junk shiit...

I have several Shimmed type HG's , it may be confusing to some ,the first one you do , but there is no problem with them once you see how its set up , it can be intimidating , thats for sure . The Purple Wrench from ALG ( which you have to buy separately now ) has graduated markings on it & makes setting up the Shims easy .

I really thought the guntec was china stuff lol. Seemed like I had to reinstall it a handful of times to get it clocked perfect. Probably wouldnt have bothered me if I was chillin at the bench by myself but it was a friends gun and I was rushed and just wanted to get it together and the shim system irritated me.
