Dusting it off. Time to build it.

I've been around here reading a bit, getting to know the place. Lots of good info here.

I dusted off my Aero Precision M5E1 Builders kit, and decided it's time to git'er done. My build is for the most, done.

Here we go.

AERO PRECISION (on hand)
M5E1 Builders Kit 15" KM

WILSON COMBAT (on hand, in route)
Barrel - TR-308SSRG18FT10
Gas Tube R/L - TR-GTR
BCG - TR-BCA-NB-308
GB, SLR Rifleworks Sentry 8 - TR-AGB-8

TRIGGER (on hand, in route
Larue MBT2

Aero Precision LPK - APRH100386C (on hand, in route)

NEEDED

Charge Handle - AXTS Raptor
Receiver Extension (kit) Aero Precision APRH100386C or Armalite - AR10REKIT01
Stock - Rogers Super Stock (on hand)
Grip - Ergo Tactical

The CH and receiver ext/buffer assembly I'm not dead set on. I'm open to suggestion, so, help me spend my $$$ if better functionality comes to play.

Any help will help my build get done quicker!!

Once you get it assembled, get a picture of that gas tube protrusion into the upper receiver.  The gas tube should stop at the very center of the cam pin cutout in the upper receiver.  I've got two Wilson Combat barrels, and they don't use DPMS gas length, and they don't use Armalite gas lengths - it's in between.  I had to use Armalite AR-10 gas tubes in them to get them "more" right, over "less" right with the shorter tubes.

Some people swear by it - my mentality is simple, though, on recoil systems.  Don't complicate shiit with complicated shiit.

That part was borne of the "I can't stand that TWANG!" crowd.  The lack of a "twang" tells you that your bolt just locked back on an empty magazine...

Leave That JP stuff alone ?

Unless you are buying the Whole Complete JP kit !!!!

That would be my approach. The only way I would go about it.

Regarding the gas tube:

I did a dry run to determine how far the gas tube extends in-to the receiver. That measurement is 19mm.

**This measurement is based on the upper receiver, barrel and gas tube in my OP.**

The no-edit option SUCKS

Thanks for the mention on the gas tube, Z.

Armalite rifle length on the way.

Yep, that seems to be the way Wilson Combat went with their barrels. They're doing that bullshiit "in-between" gas port drilling, so anybody can use anything, and it will probably function with off-the-shelf ammo, most of the time.  Bunch of bullshiit.

The Armalite AR-10 gas tube will have you a little past the centerline of the cam pin cutout - but at least you'll have the minimum amount of gas timing necessary, instead of "almost the correct amount of gas timing..."

When I installed the GB, noticing where the hole in the barrel, in relation to the GB itself didn't even cross my mind. I just installed it, after adding a counter-bore for the forward set screw. The Armalite tube extending further into the key, I like. I'll do a dry run again. Now my concern is bottoming out to the key. For piece of mind I want to know how much free-play (float) there is. Cutting/reshaping the end with my Dremel if necessary.

Great work, brother, with that graphic!  :hail:  I will re-post that one alot around here.  I already blew it up and saved the larger one to the hard drive.

That is the exact same dimensional difference between AR15 midlength gas tubes and Armalite AR-10 Carbine gas tubes, as well.  Identical difference.

@Bootscraper. I don't see anything in your post but white. Either my eyes got full of cataracts, or you replied with white fonts? LOL.

Thanks fellas. My build was a long term thought process regarding components, after receiving the M5E1 Builders Kit over a year ago. As I played the process of elimination, knowing what I wanted, I built a 2nd "list to buy" and built from there. Visually as well. So my build I assembled virtually from the components in the top image above, before the key components, barrel, bcg, adj gas block, (which I don't really need for this build, but have future plans for and will swap it out on my next build) and buttstock. Once I decided on the final components, my (virtual) AR308 was built and on my screen in 2D perspective. With two different optics. Once I was happy, let the dough flow.

The build all said and done, as seen, without optic/mount, 10Lbs/4oz.

Adding the LT204 and the SWFA 5-20x50HD with Vortex caps, that added 2Lbs/8oz. The glass and clarity is outstanding.

Total weight as seen in the bottom image, 13Lbs/9oz (less ammo). Definitely not something I planned to be carrying much beyond truck to bench or similar use. I suspect a kick like a pony, once I get it dialed in. When I want to put it on a diet, my AP CompM4 has reserved parking.
