The Next 5.56 Project in the works...

I didn't think I would like this but I think I'm in love.

<thumbsup> <lmao> <laughs>

There's more than $600 in stuff on the way right now, so it'll start shaping up nicely, and soon.  I'll keep the updates coming.  Once things start to come together, I'll get it out in the terrain and get some better pics.  ;D

Robo, this wood set was $149, from Precision Firearms - some of the set I looked at (from both DPMS and RRA) have the same basic shape of the components, but they look rough, like they just came out of a bandsaw.  This set is completely finished, smoothed and sanded, and coated in stockmaker's clear coat.  It's better than I hoped, honestly.  <thumbsup>

Starting to take shape - lower assembled, thanks to a package received from DSG Arms this morning.  Assembled with the KNS Precision "turned lower parts kit," which is the safety detent, both takedown detents, buffer retainer, bolt catch detent, and trigger/hammer pins (not used in this build).  All springs, mag release hardware, both roll pins, and bolt catch are Armalite parts, as well as the Armalite rifle receiver extension.  Trigger is the Geissele SSA-E, and the trigger guard is the MagPul aluminum trigger guard.  Buffer and buffer spring were already on hand.  The safety lever is a temp, standard one, until I get another order out to Roger for some more BADASS levers.  The trigger is a work of art.  :o

Just waiting on some RRA parts to show up, but I still haven't purchases the stripped upper receiver, the BCG, or the NM carry handle yet.

You're gonna need a stainless or hard chrome magazine to match up for picture quality!

I remember those old wood kits. They had to be finished by the builder. I found a guy who made really nice finished stuff, but he wanted $300-$400 for the set.

I'm trying to talk a buddy into needing one, jut so I can build it.

We are definitely making progress.  <thumbsup>

I'm still waiting for a shipment from RRA.  Temporary BCM BCG sitting in there right now, too.  After that RRA shipment arrives, the only two things I'll still need will be the NM carry handle, and the Young NM BCG.

I'm getting happier.  ;D

Update - RRA got the barrels in, didn't notify my that the parts "weren't in stock" after placing my order, and now the barrels are going out to be built.  A barrel nut needs to be added, then the handguard cap, then the pinning of the NM FSB.  Apparently, they don't do this in-house, but send it out.  I told them to hold the shipment intil next Monday, since I'll be gone for the T-Day holiday anyway.  It should arrive sometime next week.  At that point, I'll assemble the upper, and should have it shooting NLT Sunday, 4 December.  <thumbsup>

I still won't have the Young NM BCG until mid-December, but I'll get the thing shot before then.  :o

Major progress has been made, and the rifle is now in full firing form - completely functional.  I still want a couple different things on it before I'd call it "finished," but at least I can shoot it right now.

Pics later tonight...  <lmao> <munch>

Nice build. I bet your going to be fielding alot  of questions when you take that out to the range, not likely to be seeing another like it when you take it shooting. Makes me wonder what it would look like with the blond wood like on an AK? Your going to have to let us know how the handguard stands up. I think I read somewhere where someone had some problems with his wooden handguard cracking, but I think his was a heavier cal, and it might have been a different brand of stock. Good luck with it, You must have a walk in gun safe!

When I had this one out for the sight zero, it was later in the day - had the Range Masters all over me...  <laughs>

Figured I'd update this thread with the shooting results thus far, since I only posted this in the Range Pics thread...  <dontknow>

Okay, got out to the range about 2:30pm today, and they close at 5pm.  Overcast, no good vis on the longer distance targets (out to 550 yards), but everything up to 250 was easily visible.  That comes into play later...

Had to zero the 5.56 Woody and the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle today.  The Woody is all completely irons, but the Scout is a mini red dot.

Here's the Woody - National Match stainless heavy barrel and National Match carry handle rear sights; I still need to pick up the skinny front sight post for it, and a couple other things.  Not quite complete yet, but it needed to be shot.

Both guns, being brand new and never shot, we initially shot at 25 yards.  I went to 50 yards after that, since it was a short day.  On the Woody, I'll end up with a 300-yard zero, eventually, just based on military-ingrained mentality for a 20" 5.56 gun with irons.  I'm thinking right now that I like having the Scout set up like it is - with the red dot and a zero that will go from 50 yards to 250 yards.

The Woody first:

25 yard sight-in - all shot groups were 5-rd groups, just to get everything set up.  Explanation in the pic itself, but I installed the A1 front sight post flush with the sight base, and I didn't touch the RRA NM carry handle sights - they were shipped this way.  What you see in Group 1 is the way the sights were shipped, and install flush (front).  At 25, I think I got it pretty good:

I made a minor adjustment when I shot at 50 - first group is the upper right (in red circle), then the minor adjustment for the 50 yard zero (dead nuts centered):

I rocked that thing after that.  Hits on the 150, 200, and 250 steel were all there (man-sized steel silhouettes), and it was a great feeling.  <thumbsup>

Oh, that A1 front sight post is gonna be on it's way out - ordering about 5 different KNS Precision front sight posts to try out for it.  <thumbsup>

This won't be considered "complete" until the FSP is figured out, it's wearing a BADASS, has a Young National Match M16 carrier complete, and has a National Match A2 flash suppressor on it from Fulton.

Sadly, that might not happen until sometime in early January, because I just tripped and fell into an AR-45...  :o <dontknow> <lmao>

That thread will start soon...  <munch>
