shibiwan
I'm considering a 300 BLK build soon and I know I'll have questions. Someone help me out here. Q1. I noticed that there are a disproportionate number of 300 BLK barrels with pistol-length gas systems. Why are so many 300 BLK barrels coming with pistol length gas journals? Even on 16" barrels? Q2. Anyone know if them piston conversion kits work on 300 BLK rounds? Q2a. Anyone tried to fire 300BLK suppressed with a piston conversion? Q3. Is there any gas adjustment required for a suppressed piston AR (in general, not only 300BLK)?

I noticed that there are a disproportionate number of 300 BLK barrels with pistol-length gas systems. Why are so many 300 BLK barrels coming with pistol length gas journals? Even on 16" barrels? The 300Blk doesn't have the same amount of powder as the 5.56. The larger diameter.30 cal barrel also has more room for gas to expand. I have a carbine length 14.5" that runs great. Q2. Anyone know if them piston conversion kits work on 300 BLK rounds? I understand that shorter gas is better. The mid length systems just don't have enough pressure. I'll bet a pistol length system would work fine. Q2a. Anyone tried to fire 300BLK suppressed with a piston conversion? Not this Californian Q3. Is there any gas adjustment required for a suppressed piston AR (in general, not only 300BLK)? Depends on the system. Adams Arms conversion kits have three settings; standard, suppressed and single shot.Osprey systems have one setting... shoot.
survivalshop
I think they run the Pistol length for better function with Sound Suppressors & heavy bullets , I believe. Piston system should work , may have to tweak the buffer , depends . Edited January 23, 2014 by survivalshop
Robocop1051
I'm working on an AA piston system right now. I'm putting it on a 7.62x39 build. We'll see how this plays out.

Sisco
Enter this under dumb questions, but I don't know much about the 300 Blackout and am interested in it. The question? Does a longer barrel help improve the distance this cartridge can be effective by any appreciable amount? My understanding is unless you are accomplished at computing howitzer trajectories, the practical limit for this cartridge is 300 yards. Just curious if a longer barrel might improve that. shibiwan
Technically it has an effective range of 460m or so (compared to the 500m effective range of the 5.56). The 300blk round is more efficient, energy wise, than the 5.56 given the same barrel length. Here's some good reading that will help you decide: http://www.300aacblackout.com/resources/300-BLK.pdf

Here's some very good info on it, from all aspects. Plus some 750 meter shots on steel from a 300BLK SBR.
survivalshop
Oh , just a hobby gun if you build it your self , I didn't know that. :blahblah: Maybe his are . ( & I don't care who he is or what he's done ) Sounds like he's pushing a manufacturer. Edited February 9, 2014 by survivalshop
Robocop1051
Of course he's pushing... He traded in making sense for a paycheck a LONG time ago. He's got a wallet to feed.... In his defense though... For the most part, these "hobby builds" are crap guns. I am constantly rebuilding the crap people turn over to me. In fact, when I wrote the policy for my dept's personal rifle order, I specifically excluded personal builds and modifications... Gotta worry about the liability issues with that stuff. There was a "Practical Rifle" school here locally that proved his comment. Every "hobby build" rifle failed at some point during the course of fire. All the LE guys were using their "off the shelf" rifles (mostly Colts and Sig's), and continued the course without issue.
survivalshop
Very valid points & makes sense . I just didn't like the way he came off with that , blanket statement . I feel better now , thanks <laughs>
