shibiwan Posted February 6, 2014 Report Posted February 6, 2014 Anyone have any experience with HM Defense barrels? I'm considering this for a 300BLK build. $250ish. - 16" carbine length - Fluted - M4 feedramps Thoughts? -S
98Z5V Posted February 6, 2014 Report Posted February 6, 2014 Hadn't heard about those guys until now. Worth looking into.
survivalshop Posted February 6, 2014 Report Posted February 6, 2014 Seems my Carbine gas system on my Wilson Combat barrel works good on any bullet it spits out , but never heard of this manufacturer. Just think ,YOU can be the first , you know the rules . <dontknow>
Dane Armory Posted February 6, 2014 Report Posted February 6, 2014 Made from bit chewing 4140Chromoly... price isn't bad.

Same here, with my Nemo barrel - nitrided, 16", carbine gas. I've picked up some more loaded ammo to try out in it, of varying weights. Right now, I don't have enough ammo through it to fairly judge it, but it seems like it'll be a good barrel.
shibiwan Posted February 6, 2014 Author Report Posted February 6, 2014 (edited) This is the plan for the 300 BLK so far..... Picking this up locally for $350 - Adcor lower - Unknown upper - magpul furniture I've already got: - lo-pro gas block Then buy the following: - HM Defense 300 blk barrel - $250 - Bolt Carrier ~ $100 (any recommendations) - 10" FDE Quadrail - $40 (ebay) - charging handle - $20 ? - carbine gas tube - $10 - flash suppressor/compensator - will DIY this. Anything I forgot? Thoughts? Suggestions? Edited February 6, 2014 by shibiwan
98Z5V Posted February 6, 2014 Report Posted February 6, 2014 - Bolt Carrier ~ $100 (any recommendations) Rainier Arms has a good one, slightly over $100 right now. GTS/Denny's Guns makes it for them, and brands theirs the Thunderbolt.
shibiwan Posted February 6, 2014 Author Report Posted February 6, 2014 (edited) How about this combo from PSA? $79.99 seems too good to pass up. (yes, I'm a cheap-ass) http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-15-05/upper-parts/bolt-carrier-groups/p-tac-5-56-full-auto-bolt-carrier-group-w-charging-handle.htm Edited February 6, 2014 by shibiwan
survivalshop Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 ? Some kind of sights or glass. BCG are all over the place lately . Full M16 BCG is always my choice.
shibiwan Posted February 7, 2014 Author Report Posted February 7, 2014 Already got glass.... too much glass lying around IMO. LOL
392heminut Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 Shibi's link goes to the homepage, I think he's talking about this; http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-15-05/ar-15-parts-sale/p-tac-5-56-full-auto-bolt-carrier-group-w-charging-handle.html

shibiwan Posted February 8, 2014 Author Report Posted February 8, 2014 So, it's coming down to barrel selection. From what I'm reading, it sounds like going pistol-length gas system is better/more flexible/less problemmatic than carbine length. The catch now is finding a 16" 300BLK barrel with a pistol gas system is almost impossible (well, I have yet to find one). The closest match is a 14.5" barrel with piston-length system and pinning on a compensator without getting in trouble with the ATF. I'm planning on shooting suppressed eventually... The good news - picked up a cheqpie upper when I stumbled into an LGS earlier today. $65 for a cosmetic (finish) blem, bare BAFE-forged upper (square logo). Now I can proceed with building the upper. Wife can't complain. Bought a bus today for her. LOL
survivalshop Posted February 8, 2014 Report Posted February 8, 2014 (edited) My 16" with Carbine gas system work flawlessly , with any bullet , Powder combo. Of course I can say how it runs with a can on . Edited February 8, 2014 by survivalshop

392heminut Posted February 8, 2014 Report Posted February 8, 2014 My El Paso friend/machinist built a 300 BLK with a 12" barrel and a carbine gas system. He said supersonic works fine, as does subsonic with the can but subsonic without the can has issues with unreliable cycling. Needless to say, he's replacing the barrel with one with a pistol length gas system. He mumbled something about the carbine gas barrel being the only thing he could get when he built the rifle last year! <laughs>
survivalshop Posted February 8, 2014 Report Posted February 8, 2014 Even with subs? Well, no , haven't tried the slow stuff , but I sure you could make adj. with component change outs to get a balance to shoot them . I can try it if your not in that much of a hurry . Robocop1051 Posted February 8, 2014 Report Posted February 8, 2014 I have a 14.5" with carbine gas. So far I have only shot 110 and 125 grain loads. I have some Hornady 208 AMAX, but haven't launched them yet.
392heminut Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 Rob, he was shooting some 200+ gr. bullets. I really didn't ask what the loads were and I guess I should have./
survivalshop Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 I'm game , I've shot 150's , but taking a 220 gr. bullet sub sonic might cause issues, no idea . There's always a trade off , shoot good with a can & heavy bullets , wonder what launching 110 gr. super's would do ? I will look for some 220's & try them sub sonic , probably don't have a choice with Velocity , not enough case volume with that big of bullet taking a lot of space. <thumbsup> I'm sure others have tried this .
98Z5V Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 Dangit.. it's sold out! Lesson 65b, man... <lmao> <laughs>
Robocop1051 Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 Lesson 65b, man... <lmao> <laughs> Ahahaha
shibiwan Posted February 9, 2014 Author Report Posted February 9, 2014 Lesson 65b, man... <lmao> <laughs> Bah, LOL. I'm looking at some semi-scientific studies of 300BBLK builds and the data seems to point to 16"+pistol gas for the best compromise. Gas port sizes are literally the same to fire subs or supers, with or w/o cans.
