Microgunner
I'm having trouble believing this story. I used to live near such a lot and it was a staging area for new cars that had been recently delivered by rail and were awaited distribution. By all reports car sales have been brisk the last few years. These huge lots could just as likely be evidence of big demand. If you were able to look closely enough you'd probably see many different brands on these lots. But that wouldn't make for a controversial story and a hack pundent wouldn't get a paycheck. DNP
If that really is the case...the insurance companies should buy them up with the promise not to release them to the road. Talk about pennies on the dollar for parts vehicles. Hell, that might even help with the "year newer replacement" for totaled vehicles. 392heminut
I have to call B.S. on this one! There's no damn way the car manufacturers would keep up a pace that would create that much surplus just to keep from damaging the economy! No way in hell! Can you see car makers doing this because of their contracts with labor unions? Making excess cars might be cheaper than massive layoffs. Making excess cars might be cheaper than massive layoffs. If that were the case it would still be cheaper to just have them stand around and pay them for doing nothing! No money going out for materials and manufacturing costs other than the labor wages! Edited May 18, 2014 by 392heminut
unforgiven
Can you see car makers doing this because of their contracts with labor unions? greenmist
This wouldn't be related to a contract in anyway shape or form. This hate for unions just makes me laugh. Nope, it's more likely related to coming EPA BS coming down the pipe, and production needs to get old parts inventory out. They'll perhaps a longer than normal 4th of July shutdown, but keep on building. Our GM lots looked MUCH worse out back only because we couldn't get them shipped fast enough by semi and trains! New UAW contracts allows locals to slow down line speeds, laying off the $15 an hour folks w/o benefits in the right to work states that GM and Dodge moved to. The Union hate continues as result of pure bigotry and ignorance, and of course greed. Of course we now have a counter-culture which forgets Henry Ford's basic principle for his outstanding $5 a day wage back in the 1920s, was it? "If my factory workers cannot afford the vehicles they are building, Ford's in trouble..." Something along those lines...UAW today hires them in at $11, capped at $15 or so, with an annual healthcare deductible of $4000, and no pension benefits. Whoever's bitching about today's auto unions ain't got a clue.

You've been on this board talking $hit like you're some kind of LE agent or something, and NOW you know everything about being in another job. For clarification, WHAT THE FUK ARE YOU? Are you LE? Or, are you UAW in some manner or fashion? As far as the LE question goes, it's pretty damn simple. You ARE Law Enforcement, OR, you ARE NOT Law Enforcement. ***Last comment deleted, pending your response*** Edited May 23, 2014 by 98Z5V

greenmist
I learned about a mall ninja story here hmmm ... Pretty cool huh. Long story short: The Toyotas make a longer lasting product which does not need to be replaced as often; it sell s itself. General gubment Motors took a monster bailout, pissed A LOT of customers off, and just recently announced a $12 Billion campaign to build new factories in CHINA. http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/04/20/us-autoshow-china-gm-idUSBREA3J08N20140420 Camry's and Accords built in the U.S., last longer, bet better fuel mileage, AND they are cheaper to maintain? Detroit will fill with NOS lots. Bad GM business plan: bank on Americans being idiots who will forget about TARP and how much it costs to gas up their vehicles.
