Your gas tube is extremely short. It should extend to the middle of the cutout. I think you are on the right track by replacing it.

Can you give a parts list of what you have in the rifle? Please be as specific as possible. A picture of the gas tube and where it ends would be helpful as well. Can you weigh your buffer, measure your spring and measure the inside depth of you buffer tube? I am not the best at diagnosing these, but this info would be helpful for those who are.

There are plenty of options in off-the-shelf barrels that should suit your needs. Many places have frequent sales on these, including site sponsors.

The first question is always "What are going to use it for?" As 98Z5V said, Wilson Combat, Faxon and Ballistic Advantage will make a more than adequate barrel for most any need.

That is (will be) a great rifle.

What caliber? What do you consider long range? What distance will you be shooting? What is the gun's intended use? Targets? Hunting? If I assume 308 and 500 yards and closer, you will not likely notice any difference in performance between the two barrels. What part of Texas are you in? There are plenty of places to shoot distance in Texas. You just have to know the right people or pay for the place.
