Just have one made to your spec's . There is a minimum to cut a 308 bbl. down to, including the flutes . You may get a lighter barrel with out the flutes . Flutes are cut into a HB to lighten it & try to keep the stiffness of the HB . Oh and yes to cool it quicker . Bla Bla Bla I'm not a fan of fluting a bbl.., as you can see. I would make a comment about the stiffness of a barrel ,but some of the people here would , how can I say , take advantage of me , for the comment. <laughs>

Barrel help please

As long as the Comp is attached correctly , it shouldn't effect performance down range at all. The bullet is out of the barrel & past the comp ,for it to do its thing. All the gas is behind the bullet. Just make sure a barrel vice/blocks is used for removal or install of any muzzle device. -

Not sure about the wrench on that nut , but others will know . The 20" 1-10 bbl.s seem to like 168-9 gr. wt. of bullets for longer range . Than you have the solid copper bullets , some shoot real good & others not so much . I have a 172gr. that is not made any more , that works pretty good ,but have not tested it yet at the longer ranges , but will the first part of the year. Ya never know though till ya try different weight bullets out . No two bbl.s are alike.

And why not , the other std gas block sizes work just fine on other barrels. I think DPMS would make every thing proprietary if the could get away with it , just look at what they did to there upper receiver rail height . I know there is probably other reasons they did it ,but that one sticks out more . As he said though , its just a gas block ,if that's the barrel you want , go for it , it gets good reports.

I have one of there 16"HB on one of my AR308's ,but didn't know they were out of them. Keep at them or you can get the manufacturer (Kreiger or others )to make you what you want . There are others that make 16" bbl.'s out there & may be in stock . I am a fan of the Fulton barrel line , they make a very good shooting bbl..

The good 16" bbl. can surprise you with its accuracy. I can see why you want a S/S bbl. for hunting & such . That's all I put on my 308's . A good trigger will astound you with the difference in grouping . Hunting , target , its all the same to me , I try to get the most accuracy out of my rifle & ammo , because if you get that shot of a life time , a good grouping rifle will not let you down. -
LR-308 - ejection question
survivalshop replied to flyfishrman's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Lube it up & find out how the Honady works . Sounds like new rifle needs to be broken in . If you fired the Win . & Fed. first , slight fouling & not enough lube on a new rifle could cause slow action response. I agree with the above , clean the rifle , lube it up good & then try the Hornady . See if it does lock the bolt back . -
I kinda like to keep my ammo on the easy to get & replace side of things . I went with a 300 BLK on one rifle for hog & Deer hunting down here . Going to another cal. is not my normal thinking, but is interesting . You guys are going to make me think & do research on it though ,but it may just end up another 308 ,well maybe ,interesting , whats so good about the 338 ? I don't know squat about it. Ya and then another set of dies , brass , bullets , you guys ,I 'm trying to retire . <lmao>

Can it be posted here ?

Barrel help please
survivalshop replied to Cw434's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Sounds like you want a custom barrel & should talk to the bbl. manufacturers directly. Most will make any thing you want , for a price . Why a longer barrel for hunting ? I like short rigs for hunting , less weight ,quicker to shoulder & the 16" is pretty good for hunting ranges on game , unless you want to go long range , then you need things different & weight will not be one of the factors. I would ditch the FS ,but install a Brake /comp. ,it will greatly enhance your rifles shootability . The only down side is a little more noise & I never hear the shot go off when putting it to a game animal any way, only the one next to you will hear it . -
LR-308 - ejection question
survivalshop replied to flyfishrman's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
How did the Win & Fed function ? Whats the round count of the rifle ? The Hornady SST is a powerful round , should function fine ,normally . You will like what the SST does to game animals . I custom load it for a bunch of Hunters. -
Correct, but he did say he put more pressure on the BC to see if it would seat & you could only do that if the rifle was shot guned . Unless it was after he tried to seat it with the buffer spring ? AS said above , use lots of lube ,on new builds I always use Gun Slick grease , its black nasty stuff ,but helps work the action in if stiff. Lube it up & work the action until its smooth . I have used lapping compound on some builds , but they are very very few of them . Mostly to smooth out burr's in the barrel extension lugs , since you can't get at them in most places.

Last night at work a fellow shootest asked if I wanted to buy his DPMS complete lower assem. that he has had (new ) for years . I kept telling him he should sell it to me because he will never finish it & last night he asked me if I still wanted to buy it ,of course we haggled about it for ten seconds & I bought a unused complete 308 lower for $ 300.00 . Now I have to figure what I want to do with it. I know that funny collapsible stock is gone , maybe not first ,but its gone .

Your doing a fine job ,imschur <thumbsup>. And of course it takes the rest of the people that populate the forum to also make it the way it is .

I just got back from Ohio for gun week & it was not a normal gun week . It rained non stop for four days, three of them being the first days of the gun season ,at the end of the of the third day when it stopped , I saw my first Deer & shot it in some thickets . Small buck ,but meat for the table . Opening day saw an almost 50% drop from last years kill & the week ended with a 39% drop from last years .I normally see 9-15 deer on opening day ,but I'm sure the weather had some ting to do with it , because no one wanted to go out in it (well at least the real hunters went out ALL day every day ). Got colder on Thursday , but still no Deer . I drew a bead on another buck on Friday morning with my 44 , but buck tag already filled so that was it . We had one guy in camp that was shooting daily , but only shot up a bunch of trees & did good at center punching them though . He was using my spare 1100 & shot good at the range ,but there are no trees on the range ,LOL. All in all , it sucked for a gun week , but you have to take the good with the bad , its the way it is . At least I came home with meat . One thing I can say was my rain gear worked flawlessly , every one else got wet every day, I was the only one that came back at night dry. I bought a TRUE SPEC ECWCS parka , I was told it was made in Indonesia , but found it was made in China . It worked for three days when all the other name brand ones failed , so that's enough for me . I plan on getting the pants to match , my heavy vinyl ones are getting holes in them from the briar's.

My wife got me a Wilson Ultimate case trimmer for my birthday yesterday . Very nice unit ,can't wait to get back from Hunt camp to start using it .

I think every one should have a M1 in there safe. Its strange , I have had my 1903A3 for twenty years & have not shot her yet , gotta change that next year. Now the M1 is a different story , I take her out several times a year. The M1 Garand is a great rifle !

Need a good trigger for hunting.
survivalshop replied to flyfishrman's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
I once thought that a two stage was not for me , until I put in a Geissele SSA . On my DSG , a Remington 870 mag., I sent the trigger group to Bill Springfield & he did a awesome job right @ 4# trigger . I made a 160 yrd shot through the woods on a nice buck last year , not sure I could have pulled that off with the stock trigger set up . What ever trigger you pick , it will make you a better shooter ,because we know the rifles out shoot most of us & the stock AR trigger sucks ., so its a big improvement.
