  1. Gotta agree with ya there . I wonder if the type of & or how much finish is applied to the upper receiver, has an effect on the fitment or inside dia of the bbl. extention socket in it .
  2. Think of it as, sending her to collage & you don't have to pay for it . You have the sickness & its not going away . Sorry to hear about your loss though.
  3. Yes ,but where is the serial # on those type rifles ? How easy is it to change a bbl. on those type of rifles ? There is a lot of fitting to replace a bbl. on those type rifles. I think we all know it makes no sense. I'm not backing up the BATFE , its just how & where they require that info on what type of firearm . We all know they are pricks & they pretty much do what ever suits them at the time or who's in office telling them what to do . Facts of life working around Government agency's.
  4. I picked up some H110 & WW 296 yesterday for testing . I found a local reloading shop , go figure, & he had good prices on them . I loaded some up with 2400 & can only get 16.5 grs. in the case with out compressing the charge . The H110 I got 20 grs. in there with room to spare . I will testing the upper & ammo Friday & will post results & photo's.
  5. I like them & if you order a rifle or buy one ,just make sure its threaded & you can decide on which one later or order one on the rifle . .308 barrels are usually 5/8 x 24 , threads , if my memory serves me ( or luck )
  6. Yes & no . It all depends on where they designate where the information is supposed to be . On some of the .22 LR rifles , all the info is on the bbl. ,but the AR's because of the ability to quickly change the barrel ,it may not be on the barrel but on the receiver . It may be what is considered the FFL transferable component.
  7. Unfortunately the spec's on how a firearm receiver or the serial numbered part of the firearm is already in writing & is law & has to show Caliber . Its not new, its already in writing on how its lay-ed out for identification & caliber specific is one of them . I don't know why BATFE has turned a blind eye on it for so long , but they most probably will enforce it now that we have BO's gang in there. I have one Mutical lower . Background Section 923(i) of the Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA), as amended (18 U.S.C. Chapter 44), requires licensed importers and licensed manufacturers to identify, by means of a serial number, each firearm imported or manufactured. The serial number must be engraved, cast, or stamped on the receiver or frame of the weapon in such manner as the Secretary of the Treasury prescribes by regulation. With respect to certain firearms subject to the National Firearms Act (e.g., machine guns), 26 U.S.C. 5842 requires each manufacturer and importer and anyone making a firearm to identify each firearm by a serial number. The serial number may not be readily removed, obliterated, or altered. Section 5842 also requires the firearm to be identified by the name of the manufacturer, importer, or maker, and such other identification as the Secretary may prescribe by regulation. Regulations that implement section 923(i) are set forth in 27 CFR 178.92. In general, this section requires each licensed manufacturer or licensed importer of firearms to legibly identify each firearm by engraving, casting, stamping (impressing), or otherwise conspicuously placing on the frame or receiver an individual serial number. The serial number must be placed in a manner not susceptible of being readily obliterated, altered, or removed. Section 178.92 also requires licensed importers and manufacturers to conspicuously place the following identification markings on the frame, receiver, or barrel of each firearm imported or manufactured in a manner not susceptible of being readily obliterated, altered, or removed: 1. The model, if such designation has been made; 2. The caliber or gauge; 3. The name (or recognized abbreviation of same) of the manufacturer and also, when applicable, of the importer; 4. In the case of a domestically made firearm, the city and State (or recognized abbreviation thereof) where the licensed manufacturer maintains its place of business; and
  8. I don't own a Lee rifle dies set , So I looked at there FAQ's on there web sight to make sure how the sizer die is set up & its just like my RCBS. 1-When adj. your die ,make sure the ram is at its upper most stroke (some of the presses will go past this if you stroke the handle down all the way , so look at the ram to see its stroke ,with the shell holder on it ) 2- with the press ram at its highest point , screw the sizer die till it touches the shell holder & lock it down . (I always screw the die down ,just a little more to make the ram slightly cam over and I mean slightly , to take any play out of the linkage ) This should give you the proper sizing & case shoulder set. Some barrel chambers this adj. can be set up different ,but this has worked for me for over thirty years . Some dies are different & there instructions should be followed also. I have also used only small base dies in my .223 & 308, but that's just me & I set them up the same way.
  9. It makes good sense until I got to the part about gluing or lock tite-ing the barrel . I can see no way that there would be play in the barrel extension with the barrel nut torqued to proper spec's. If he is talking about the fit of the barrel extension in the upper receiver , hows that going to matter when its the flange of the barrel extension that is truly mated & tightened to the upper receiver ? A good fit of the barrel extension to the upper receiver is where its at & the last barrels I've installed had that ,so I don't see a problem there . I had to gently tap the last ones in place in the upper receiver ,but they have all been match barrels & that includes the Willson 300BLK barrel I just installed . Even if you glue or loc tite it ,you have to torque it down afterwards & that will change its set point or using any thing as a filler it will heat up & change the setting , if any, with time or shot count. Now there may be a glue or loc tite that's impervious to heat ,but you may need to throw away the upper when a barrel change is needed & that may be what the competitive shooters do. I really don't know about that . He does have some good points in there though.
  10. Who's die set you using ? Make sure they are set up correctly . Full length should work . I'll bet they are a little long in the overall length or your shoulder was not set back enough . The Norinco is probably a 7.62 chamber & your LR is a 308 . 7.62 has longer fee bore to lands of bbl.. The LR's are notorious for tight chambers . Getting a case gage will help & a cartridge gage . I never use them ,but I check a batch of sized brass to see if they fit in chamber before I start loading them. The case gage will tell you if the sized case is to Sammi spec's.
  11. Upper is completely assembled .I had a small problem with the Troy battle rail. I had a four inch rail on the bottom , forward part of the hand guard & the screw block for the add on rail interfered with the ability to install the hand guard . I have a Vltor low pro. gas block & ya can't get much smaller than that . I removed the rail & the hand guard went right on. I will look into altering it or I can move it back & it would be out of the way,as far as it being in the way of assembling it. I do not like a rail at the bottom where my hand grip is. I had to order some H110 & I am using some other powders to work up loads . I cut & formed more brass last night to begin the load development. Photo's will follow.
  12. Now that's a good idea !
  13. Let us know in the trigger section what you think of that trigger because that's the one I want also. Its taken me over a year to decide ,damn.
  14. 1.368 case length ,compared to the shorter 300 Whisper, its variable case length . Sammi spec. 300BLK . The 300BLK has a longer throat then the others . Which means you can hop it up . I picked up some Speer 125 TNT bullets today , I could not find any H110 , so I will use 2400 . I got all my parts today , so I can fire this round . My Head Spaced gages are a week out ,but it won't stop me from load testing . I have already looked at it & from my experience , it will pass . I just will not know until I put gages in her .
  15. Some may find this hard to believe , but a lot of R&D went into the DPMS buffer & its spring , for the 308 . True every rifle is different ,but I see no problem with them .
  16. There's only one problem with those type of lapping tool's , you can not get away with out getting compound in places you don't want it . You don't want to lap the inside of the upper receiver where the bbl. inserts, only the face. You really can not do it , compound will get where you don't want it ,no matter what you do.
  17. I can't afford to feed any of them any more .
  18. Welcome to the socialist republic of the America's.
  19. Who's dies probably won't matter too much except for the neck tension we discussed . Now the ammo that is shot out of what . You can shoot any of the 300 Whisper ,300 fireball ,300/221 or what ever ,out of the 300BLK barrel, but you can not shoot 300BLK ammo in any of the other calibers.
  20. The only bad reviews were about the mount . I see Burris makes a QR mount for it now . Been contemplating pitting one on my 300BLK.
  21. My DPMS std. carbine 308 buffer has had no problems ,but I just recently changed the spring to a Superior flat wire spring & Its working just fine . I will be doing some chronograph comparisons between the two springs in the near future.
  22. Sorry to hear about the HG . I think all 308 BCG are so heavy ,you won't have to worry about it . Now a Full Auto BC ,not sure , they may be all full auto carriers. I have worked on & built many select fire M16's, not sure if one is built for 308's . There are select fire 308's out there. After having a select fire FNHB & an M14 , I'm sure I don't want one .
  23. I made a very crude FF hand guard socket ,when they first came out & when I get time I will take a photo of it . No strap wrenches for me , this worked on a great number of rifles back twenty five years ago.
  24. 7.62x51 will have a longer throat in the chamber than a .308 , for a wider selection of NATO ammo manufacturers & types. .308 Head space gages will work fine .
  25. Reads 1.9075" This is the first step after the main base (may be a stop ) This is the part of the block that goes inside the upper receiver. length. There is a channel at the top , not sure why ,maybe for gas tube to work on the upper with bbl. installed already ? Pin size. Mine reads DPMS on the bottom. Any one need other measurements.
