  1. The limits of travel in live fire may be different. 50 cents did the trick for me on my Matrix build.
  2. I thought the extra moving parts of a piston system would make them less accurate but then I will never be a good enough shot to judge the difference myself.
  3. Impingement for me. Lighter weight, fewer proprietary parts, and less expensive in general. I've got a P716 that uses a short stroke piston system, can't say it runs that much cleaner with all the brass shavings that get ground into the bolt and lugs, still gets a bit of carbon as well. My NiB BCG is just as quick when it comes to cleanup. I don't see any real advantage to the heat issue either, full auto it might come into play but the barrel gets just as hot in both systems I have.
  4. One free float rail I know comes with the wrench is Midwest Industries; https://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_ID=189 I can't say I've heard of a barrel coming with nut or wrench. The wrench you need for the barrel nut will depend on what you get for a rail.
  5. You need a gas block just not an adjustable gas block, two different animals. Here are links to examples of each that I've installed; Standard - https://geissele.com/super-gas-block.html Adjustable - http://slrrifleworks.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=57_103_104&product_id=123 There are different methods of attachment, set screws that lock into dimples in the barrel, pinned, clamp, and clam shell clamp.
  6. Sig put a dual ejector bolt in my 716 to cure ejection failures.....didn't work. I wish they would have sent me the old single one back, I worry about strength issues with all the material that has to be removed to make room for them.
  7. Use a wood dowel and give it some love taps. I doubt they used mechanical force to put them together so they should come apart with persuasion. Might be a pain till they break in but sounds like a good "match".
  8. I assume you mean adjusting the gas block? There are adjustable gas keys that can be put on the bolt carrier but adjustable gas blocks are a much more popular method of adjusting the gas pressure. The adjustments for the gas block would depend on several factors, barrel length, gas system length, type of adjustable gas block, type of ammo,...these would be some of the factors and I'm sure I'm missing something obvious. You don't actually need an adjustable gas block if the rest of the system is in good order, for straight up dependability in a self defense rifle I wouldn't use one. They are most often installed when a suppressor will be used so the gas can be backed off to avoid too much gas from the back pressure. I'm using one on an AR-15 build in order to use a lightweight BCG and buffer system, tuning it for minimum recoil so the little grandkids and the wife will enjoy shooting it, that and the 3-Gun guys claim you can get back on target faster and I love shooting fast ...........but when the bills for parts come in the wife thinks it is all for her ;-)
  9. Got the barrel made by Ex-Caliber Barrels;http://x-caliber.net.revlis.arvixevps.com/ar-10 Bought the NiB BCG from d. wilson; http://www.dwilsonmfg.com/store/p18/AR10_Bolt_carrier_Group.html I'm not sure I would go with X-caliber again due to the gas port issues and the way they dealt with it here on the forum; Here is the thread with more of my build details; http://forum.308ar.com/topic/11710-jts-matrix-build/
  10. As far as I know the dust cover is the same for all the 308's, might be an outlier in the mix but the Matrix uses the standard 308 size, check out the Strike Industries cover;http://www.strikeindustries.com/shop/index.php/products/rifle-accessories/ar/upper-parts/ultimate-dust-cover-for-308-656.html#.VseyN_IrKCg it was a tight fit in my Matrix but with some light sanding I now have a great fit. Charging handles are the same thing with just a few more oddballs in the mix, as far as I know the odd ones are all piston driven. Forward assist is a different animal, I think it is just as dependant on the carrier used as it is the receiver. I bought one that was listed as "308 AR specific" but it locked the bolt forward on my Matrix/d. wilson combo. I've read a standard AR 15 FA will work in most but I ended up going with a delete plug.
  11. You have to give Mark Westrom some credit for the current popularity of the big bore AR platform. He took a chance and bought the name and design rights when they had been languishing in obscurity for years plus put a lot of his own efforts into upgrading the platform. He might not have been a Eugene Stoner but the man had vision. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ArmaLite
  12. What Shepp said on the barrel/BCG combo. Another thing to watch for is the handguard connection/barrel nut. My Matrix blem was an Armalite thread pattern but if I remember correctly they were in the process of changing to all DPMS type threads. You'll want to know for sure before you buy a handguard, Chris should be able to tell you what you have if there is a question.
  13. Welcome from Iowa....via North Carolina. No, it needs to be checked. Sent my bolt to the barrel maker for headspacing as well.
  14. Bile with a hint of spoiled milk.
  15. Bushnell just announced an upgraded warranty on the Elite line that reads like the Vortex warranty; http://bushnell.com/warranties I haven't used it but it reads good. I agree their service was a little hoaky in the past, made you pay a $20 service fee and then took months to get the optics back.
  16. That is weird....the Hillary/Bernie picture had your avatar next to it this morning, I double checked before I hit submit?????????? Anyway, sorry Shepp and thanks for making me brush my teeth twice this morning Mike!
  17. That is how I was taught. Had an M-16 in the service that needed rings, who knows how many rounds that Vietnam era rifle had fired though.
  18. I just got a little vomit in my mouth.....thanks Shepp.
  19. I put a chunk of rubber grip tape on the deflector, it markedly decreased the case denting on both 7.62 and 5.56 rifles. I didn't care so much about finish wear but wanted to keep the cases as nice as possible for reloading.
  20. YHM makes a riser for the gas block that will put the sights on the same plane but info from another member that tried a set that way recommended against it as the riser would come loose after a bit.
  21. I've got two Mech Armors(standard and CQB versions), a Raptor and a BCM but found the Mech Armor to be far superior for grip and smoothness of operation.

  24. I had the same issue with a Sig 716. It was sharp enough to slice my finger and gouged the bullet and case real deep. It went back to Sig for that and other issues, they smoothed it out some but that was the only issue they fixed.....so far.
