Oooow! IHC is relatively rare. It's not a reweld, is it?

If it's truly unissued, then it will be in the CMP auction site and go for >$5000. These are usually well used rifles w/ mixed manufacturers' parts. $1050 is too much unless seller can provide details that it is "correct" (all parts from same manufacturer and similar time period.) Offer him $675 and go from there. I'm pretty sure TRW did not make bolts for the Garand, only the M14/M1A.

The seller doesn't appear well informed either. There's no info to make an informed judgement.. Manufacturer? SN? Barrel stamp, date, Throat and breech condition? Trigger to stock lockup? "Correct" or mixmaster? Etc. Caveat emptor. Oh yeah, in the title... it's Garand.
  5. He makes a great point. Two things led me down the path of build versus buy. First, so many mall ninjas with tricked out rigs at the range bragging about their aftermarket equipment (who BTW couldn't shoot worth a darn) helped me realize people were spending a lot of money unnecessarily to get where they were going. Second, most of the off the rack 308ARs were just plain butt-ugly! I want a rifle I'm proud of,
  6. I use the one piece surplus cleaning rod purchased from CMP. Screw an extra length onto it and it reaches thru a 20" barrel from the breach. Great item. Think I paid $10.
  7. Although relatively new to the AR308 platform, I shot and competed with M1 and M14s for over 25 years. I can tell you from experience that level of poor work is, unfortunately, commonplace with Garands and M14s. And it's often from hacks who advertise nationally that they are "experts" (quality M1/M14 gunsmiths are RARE). The best advice I can give is to ask before you allot work what their policy is for unsatisfactory work.
  8. You're going to have to get a little thicker skin to hang around here.
  9. I don't get it.
  10. That looks like something from the movie remake "The Thing". ::)
  11. Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving to all. Dwell not on what you don't have, but what you do have.
  12. He's just looking out for your best interests. I suggest all of you with these erosion-prone heavy bullets bundle them up and send them to me. I'll properly dispose of them, and extend the life of your barrels in the process.
  13. I'd forego the HF drill press. Some of their equipment is really good, but that particular item isn't one of them. I've trimmed 1000s of cases with my WFT using both my lathe and a hand-held 1/2" Makita drill. I find I don't need to bevel or debur the case mouth partly because at the end of the trim process, I give a slight twist of the case still in the WFT, opposite the direction of rotation. That motion in a drill press would be very difficult, and it certainly wouldn't be as secure in a drill press. BTW, if you use a WFT, get a pair of Gorilla gloves to hold the case. They're thin, tactile, grippy and work great.
  14. Yeah, as indifferent as I generally am to eBay that's where I got two KAC rear sights, for a very reasonable price. And I don't think the Troy and Yankee Hill sights are adjustable for elevation, only windage. It would seem a no-brainer to make elevation and windage adjustable rear sights, but they're scarce. BTW, I love the USMC stamped on my sights! :))
  15. Who besides KAC makes rear iron sights that are adjustable for both windage and elevation and attaches to a Picatinney rail? I really like the KACs, especially the ingenious front sight adjustment, but they are expensive.
  16. Sat and stared at a sack of 46 lbs of 5.56 1x fired brass. A neighbor received multiple sacks from a retiring gunsmith and thought he'd be generous.
  17. You guys are making me mad I paid a premium for my matched MATEN upper/lower >:D (Just kidding.) Yes, a new parts and build report coming, with some new parts people wanted to see.
  18. While the base dimensions are the same, the shoulders are 2.5 deg. different. Spend a few bucks and get some .308 dies and some 1x-fired LC cases. I wouldn't do it. My face is too important. http://saami.org/PubResources/CC_Drawings/Rifle/30-06%20Springfield.pdf http://saami.org/PubResources/CC_Drawings/Rifle/308%20Winchester.pdf
  19. You're up near Frostbite Falls, right? ::)
  20. I'm sure it works for you, but that is a s*&t-hot load. With a 175 SMK, Sierra maxs out at 41.7 grains Varget (2500 fps) and Hornady maxs out at 40.6 grains Varget (2400 fps) for the service rifle. Hodgdon lists 42-45 grains of Varget (2583-2690 fps) under the 175 SMK, but I've always found Hodgdon's reloading data to be on the hot side for service rifles.
  21. I just saw this while looking for an upper AR308 block. Looks interesting. http://www.squirreldaddy.com/308-Upper-Vise-Block-and-Barrel-Removal-System-p/SD20-173.htm (unless someone wants to lend me an upper block)
  22. That damn global warming shows up again to ruin a perfectly good holiday. We had 75 deg temps, clear sky and no wind. Perfect for an evening in the driveway with neighbors handing out candy.
  23. I clean the rifle every time I shoot it. Too much moisture in the air to allow any crud to accumulate and attract moisture.
  24. I'm in the process of cleaning every piece, nook and cranny on my Uniflo, and making sure the press is aligned properly. For some reason the Uniflo decided to start spilling powder on almost every rifle case. Powder is too rare these days to waste even a single grain.
  25. The Aguila subsonic is good for its purposes, but it has it's limitations. It won't cycle a S&W model 41 reliably, or a Walther P22. Just not enough power. It will cycle a Marlin 60 though. Can't figure that one out.
