Thanks everyone. I appreciate the input, especially with the "DESTROYED FOREVER" lesson/threat/suggestion - which can probably be easily demonstrated with the .308 :D We are just starting to know this new kid so there's lots to learn. Most kids will show their true colors within a month or two with us. We've usually dealt with very difficult pre-teens/teens with various behavioral conditions (PTSD, RAD, BPD, meth kids... yadda yadda) and so far this boy is the most "normal" kid we've had. Thanks again for the input - I'll have to study the situation and not push it until he's ready. -S

Nice vid... trying to outrun the cops in a Mazda. LOL

My wife and I have been fostering kids from the state (AZ) for a few years and we are about to adopt a 6-yo soon. I've always thought that if I could teach them safe gun handling that it would benefit them as they grew older. Anyway, the questions are.... - How young do you start them with safe gun handling? - How young is too young to take them to the range? - What's the appropriate age for actual shooting? I was considering taking the little one to the range evnetually, but I'm unsure if it's appropriate at 6. He's full of energy and I think that could lead to safety issues. Then again, I could make him run to 200yds to plug up target holes... LOL. I also think that I'd start him out with perhaps an air gun or a 22 sooner or later... probably later....hmmmm maybe I could justify buying an AR15/M4 and add a CMMG 22 conversion... LOL. Thoughts? -S

How did I miss this! lol I was swamped with 21 kids (3-12) in the house.....darn wife and her cookout...

I own a CMMG MK3 and it's worked flawlessly thus far (450+ rounds). IMO it's well made and CMMG were quick to fix a small minor issues (wrong bolt catch - they quickly sent me a new one). At the range, it can easily do sub MOA groups. I went with the CMMG over the Sig due to what was available at that moment - I personally prefer a slightly longer barrel, 18-20" and all the Sig's they had at the LGS were 16" Either way both are good mid-budget choices. Oh yeah.. welcome from AZ! -S

With an empty magazine, can you pull the charging handle far enough for the bolt catch to engage correctly (i.e. on the bolt face and not on the bolt carrier)? If the buffer is the incorrect one (too long) the BCG won't pull back enough to catch properly. If it engages correctly you should be OK on the buffer. Next, try putting 1 round in the magazine, take one shot and see if it cycles properly and catches on the bolt catch. That should give you a clue if you're undergassed or have the wrong spring.
-
Do you have the correct buffer/spring combo? The 308's can use a standard AR15 buffer (rifle or carbine) but requires a different spring/buffer combo to work correctly. -S

Epic! Good find. ....on a related note: Didn't know the PST had an auto-power off feature. Maybe I should RTFM.

Got some info after asking them some questions about their spotting scopes. Figured I'd share. Good Afternoon, Thank you for your time and interest in Vortex Optics! Vortex is one of the few U.S. owned and operated optics companies. All design, engineering, testing/evaluation, service work, and warranty repairs are done right here in Middleton, WI. Depending on which product you are looking at will determine their country of origin. Specifically, the spotters scope are now all going to have a Chinese country of origin. We discontinued the Viper lineup because there wasn’t a huge difference between the HD and just the normal Viper. The differences are going to be found in the glass and the coatings. You would most likely start to see a difference when you get past 40x, it’s just going to be a little brighter/clearer with the HD Viper. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. Unfortunate IMO... thought that the Viper spotters were made in the Philippines like their riflescopes.

Dangit... Cabelas had the Vortex Viper spotting scope for $499 (instead of $749) yesterday and today the special is gone!! Was going to share the link and pick one up for myself.

Maybe the OP is a juggler? IMO regular handguards do nothing to strengthen the barrel since they are merely plastic pieces clipped on to the barrel and held by the delta ring. Barrels are surprisingly strong. If you hit the barrel hard enough to damage it, you'll have other problems on the rifle to worry about. -S
-
Correct me if I'm wrong.... SS or Cr-Mo barrels are about the same, longevity and accuracy wise. Chrome lined barrels are supposed to have a slightly longer life at the expense of a little reduce accuracy.

Bah... was just at the Usery range yesterday so I'm ammo'ed out.

I think one of the three is white (halfie maybe?)

Welcome!

+1 for full float handguards for better overall performance, accuracy, mounting etc. Depending on which float tube you get, the rigidity of the float system is surprisingly solid. I guess it's the perception that it is "floating" that makes you feel otherwise. Not sure why you'd want to go MOE since they are a step down from the full float counterparts..... and besides you can get one with a removeable top rail if you don't need it. P.S. I have an extra ACS-L stock for sale if anyone's interested.

New scope = new pictures = more gun porn! Sitting on a temporary riser... the 20MOA one should arrive tomorrow. Can't wait to get it boresighted and take it to the range this weekend. Weight is slowly rising..... 13.07lbs with empty mag.

Just went and did the exchange. Thank you guys!
