A ton is an understatement. Here's another question that will come up. If a group buy will fly, and all the packages are to be the same, what barrel length are we going to want?
-
Just thinking ahead. Does anyone have any idea what powders to consider for reloading this thing? I would think MDWS would have suggestions about it seeing that this is strictly a reloader's cartridge (unless you get ammo from them).
-
But, but, I heard it somewhere from someone.
-
Yep....Barrel, bolt and dies in a package. I'm in!
-
Cutting is no big deal for me since I already have a setup for cutting 300 BLK. MDWS has Hornady sizing and seating dies and Lee factory crimp dies although out of stock. For bullets a short search turned up these https://www.powdervalleyinc.com/product-category/reloading-supplies/bullets/rifle/?filter_caliber-range-sort-by=358&query_type_caliber-range-sort-by=or

I stumbled on this old thread which sounds as if the original poster is the guy from Mad Dog Weapon Systems. https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/358-yeti-my-first-wildcat-adventure.781855/ He talks about the metallurgy of the bolt and trying to solve the .308 case rim in a AR15 bolt problem. The thread just ends and seems to have been locked. Maybe they never did figure out the proper metallurgy for the bolt which may explain why everything 358 Yeti related is out of stock.
-
Thats for sure. As if I need another rifle to swat deer at the 50 yards or less range we get shots at around here. But it would still be fun and I have an almost unlimited supply of 308 cases to play with. I do believe you cut the 308 case DOWN just below the shoulder, then neck the now almost straight walled case DOWN to .358
-
We need to come up with a 358 Yeti group buy when the barrels and bolts come available

Somebody already "in" for life will do a Dahmer on him with whatever implement is handy. It would be a shame that taxpayers end up supporting him for too long.

What do you have on order or in the mail? Part 2

2 500 ct packs of these little buggers https://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item/001532276c500/22-caliber-point224-diameter-62-grain-bthp-with-cannelure-500-count I'm going to see if they shoot any better than 55 gr FMJ out of my 20" barreled coyote AR15 -
It is! But be careful....they tend to breed if left to their own devices and soon you'll have more.

Going into 3 more months of snow on the ground winter, not having inventory laying around is how I like it. The same guy in Montana grabbed it all up.

The shell casings look like a 7mm Mag or 300 Win Mag cut off below the shoulder. Straight wall for the entire length.

....and now I just received a Christmas coupon in an email from KAK that I might be able to pass along. A buddy of mine who is a federally licensed gun pusher and ammo remanufacturer does a lot of work for KAK. I've held one of the prototype 450 Marlin uppers. I knew it was not a 308 but when he said 450 Marlin and showed me an empty shell casing I had a holy chitt moment.

From past reading experience you can expect them to either pencil straight through a deer or if you're lucky be unstable enough to tumble on impact. They are designed for 300 WM speeds not plodding along subsonic. I've taken 3 deer the past 2 years with Maker 200 grain expanding subsonic Blackout bullets and even with them perfectly expanding(perfect triangle exit holes) there was no blood trail from any of the deer. 2 of them flopped over in 30 yards, the third made it about 100 with an entry and exit wound in the chest. None of them were tracking jobs, it was looking for a dead deer.

Yup, and with that difference in velocity is a huge difference in trajectory. A 220 grain sub has 5 - 6" of drop between 50 and 100 yards. My 110 grain Varmageddons sighted in at 50 yards are dead nuts same aim point at 100. The bullet is rising through the 50 yard mark and dropping through the 100. A 300 yard shot with a .308 pushing a 168 grain bullet is definitely possible. That same shot with a 110 grain supersonic bullet from a BLK is pushing the limits of the caliber.
-
Not to take anything away from the collective 300 BLK knowledge around here but try this place. http://www.300blktalk.com/forum/ A lot of the guys there have been shooting a BLK since its inception and the knowledge base is second to none. I have a 16" carbine AR and a 8" suppressed SBR AR. Both of them are extremely accurate. The SBR will lob 220 grain bullets at 970fps and touch holes at 50 yards all day and in two years has 3 deer to its credit.

How about this? https://www.kakindustry.com/magnum/kak-450-marlin-16-inch-barrel-upper or this? https://www.kakindustry.com/magnum/magnum-upper-24 I know you've already got a lower or three they could work with.
