I've used many many different types of slings in combat and on the road as a cop. Magpul and Blackhawk was ok, but my favorite was Viking Tactical... until I got my hands on one of Jacob's Beachin Tactical slings. Though his standard slings are nice, I decided to go custom with him. He had a deal going where I got a custom sling for $65 shipped. and I am not talking semi custom, I got to pick everything, including the hardware. I ended up with a sling that included all metal hardware in the same design as a VTAC sling with the nylon strap being in Kryptek Typhon (which he didn't have on hand and ended up purchasing just for my sling build) and the padded area being made with black and gray 550 cord to match the Typhon pattern. With Jacob there was no list of choices, there was whatever you could think up. And I have to say, the quality of my sling is as good as any I have ever seen. And with the type of customer service he provides, I know you will never have to worry. He'll proudly back his products like I proudly use them. Now I am not saying a fully custom sling will always be $65, like I said, he had a deal going, but the quality and designs he provides is very affordable. I also know he is constantly improving on sling designs and constantly testing them in the field. I doubt I will ever buy another sling that isn't a Beachin Tactical. And I am not just promoting Jacob's stuff because he's a brother here on the forum, every part of his business is quality.

so first of all, you have to look at bullet construction. Full metal jackets and some other types of bullets penetrate very well because they don't really expand as quickly. ballistic tip, lead tipped, hollow points, and other such bullets are made to expand and don't penetrate as well. the other thing you have to look at is the speed of the round. I have seen many YouTube tests where people compare penetration capabilities of similar grain/construction bullets fired out of 30-30, 308, 30-06, and 300 win mag (usually on milk jugs). now one would think that the 300 win mag would penetrate farther. but what really happens in these tests is the 30-30 penetrates farthest. Now someone can correct me if I am wrong in any of this, but from my understanding, the quicker bullets expand more widely and more rapidly. This causes the bullet to dump its energy more quickly, while the slower bullets coming from the 30-30 would take longer to dump their energy, allowing them to go farther. now these tests I always saw done with lead tipped, hunting style bullets, beats me how a full metal jacket would do when comparing the calibers. now specifically to 5.56 though. the military basically designed their bullets to tumble on impact. the thought behind this is it would cause more damage as it tumbled through the body. However this was very inconsistent. often times bullets would pass right through with little wound channel if it didn't hit anything hard on the target, and it wouldn't expand much on impact and dump that energy into the target. other negatives about tumbling bullets is if you have a target behind any obstruction, the bullet would tumble off its trajectory after hitting whatever it was before your target. I saw this in my training where we would setup mock buildings with 3/8" plywood. as soon as the bullet entered the plywood, it would start to tumble well off coarse in an unpredictable direction while dumping its energy against any and all resistance, including air. Special Operations started to use a 77gr cartridge that wouldn't tumble, which among other things, gave them better penetration with their rifles. SECTIONAL DENSITY... this is the need to know term for penetration If you ignore everything else I have said, use this when looking into penetration. Read the link below to have it explained better than I ever could. https://www.chuckhawks.com/sd.htm so basically your lighter 5.56 cartridges are going to have worse sectional density than the heavier ones. so 50gr being rather light is going to have poor penetration compared to say a 70gr.

as long as you aren't as bad as my father in law. I have saved several rifles of his that were just rusting away. he would buy them and never clean them after going deer hunting in the snow or rain.

I was actually worried after my post last night. I tried to take the bcg apart, and for the love of God I couldn't get the cam pin out. it was really late so I tried again in the morning. well it came apart finally, but it had basically no clearance at all, need a damn microscope to make sure it is turned just the right amount. lol. -

Got my ACME bcg. It came with a cool Velcro patch. So far I am very impressing with the quality. For $108 shipped, it seems like a steal. I guess time will tell after it has had some rounds ran though it. ? -

ARTrooper replied to Lane's topic in 300 AAC Blackout
The stuff is pretty cheap and a lot of fun. makes a bigger boom than one would expect. my neighbor shot one pound once and I went over there thinking he blew his house up. lol. they expected their neighbor cop to show up after such a big bang. lol.
