Had a nice day, got some sub MOA groups. The RL7 did not perform well until I hit close to max loading. Noticed that with the 458 as well. Circa 1929 '95 Winchester. Still a regular shooter. Sends 300 gr Hornady's uprange at over 2000 fps with SD's in the single digits. Punishes on both ends. I've posted these before but you got me stirred up, pretty proud of this shooter.

Well now, just finished up a couple hundred 308 gravel pit specials... Mixed headstamp multi times fired brass ran through a small base die that I shortened up a few extra thousands, 150 gr fmj over 42.4 gr AR Comp loaded on the Dillon 650 progressive. Definitely not loaded to be tack drivers but fast and cheap and don't care if I recover the cases. What I load, using a Dillon 650 progressive with a power trimmer set up, case feeder with pistol, small and large rifle plates, plus 2 Rockchuckers. 22 hornet 223/ 556 25-45 Sharps 25-06 308 30-06 300 WBY 338 Win Mag 340 WBY 405 WCF 458 SOCOM 45-70 9mm 38/357 40 S&W 44 SP/ 44 MAG 45 ACP 45 Colt/ Colt Mag 454 Casull Favorite powders H110 AR Comp Tightgroup VV 3N37 H4350 H4831 Varget Reloader 15,17 Data 2200 AA #7

Shooting USPSA I had backed out the mainspring tension screw on my 629 until the hammer would bounce back off the primer, spring wouldn't even hold it all the way forward. Only could run Federal primers. Argued with an old gunsmith I know for over a year about the subject and he finally convinced me, better geometry to change out the mainspring and rebound spring and polish up all the lockwork, and keep the screw all the way in.

Been looking for the last piece of the puzzle for the Colt SP2A2, a sight for the grenade launcher. Found one on Ebay mounted on a cracked rail, looks authentic. Looks like the correct configuration?

This was the tedious balance, no idea why I grabbed a box with this boneyard collection in it but I had it with me. Springs: Armalite EA1095 Sprinco Red Ar15 Carbine (Glad I didn't have a sprinco orange with me...) Buffers: Armalite 5.4 Expo Arms (H3) 5.2 Expo Arms (H2) 4.6 Expo Arms (H1) 4.0 Ar15 Carbine 3.0

Not at all. Brass looked fine. Any heavier wouldn't open at all or come about halfway open and close back up. The second to lightest buffer the spent brass would either barley clear the chamber or get caught. Think that was 4oz buffer/ AR15 carbine spring. Started heavy and went lighter and lighter spring and buffer until reliable feed and LRBHO. Totally under gassed.
-
Yes and your welcome for the data! So it's possible to have an AR15 recoil spring and 3 oz buffer in a large frame, only downside I could see is the spring probably couldn't overcome a little fouling. We'll drill it up, see how it runs with the heavy buffer and spring. Also maybe try the 4.6 oz buffer and red sprinco combo seeing how I have nothing better to do until hunting season then to gather data for the team . Al

Original owner said he was running sprinco orange and heavy buffer. Must have had some gorilla loads. Plan on opening up the port a bit.

OK, ready to figure? We spent a couple hrs + at the range this morning. The details for a reminder: 0.060 +/- gas port midlength gas dead center cam cutout .875 journal Seekins adjustable block Toolcraft BCG 18" BA barrel Started with Armalite ea1095 spring, Armalite 5.4 buffer, Armalite 308 extension tube Wouldn't cycle or lock back Adjusted block all the way out. No Joy. Went to Sprinco Red Spring. No Joy. Took gas block off, inspected, and reinstalled. 4.6 buffer. 4.0 buffer. No Joy. Worked all the way down to AR15 carbine spring and H1 buffer, WooHoo! Ran a few single and double loads and 2 magazines full with LRBHO 100%. Tedious! Fully functional. Good groups factory ammo, 125 and 140 gr w/ AR15 Carbine spring and buffer in a 7-5/8" Armalite tube. Forget everything you learned about 308's...

OK so now long barrel questions, with 243, rifle length gas, or maybe rifle +2? High pressure bolt or 308? 1:10 good for 100gr bullets, or go to 1:9? Thx.
-
Agreed. I would also think however that as the velocity increased (without loosing accuracy) the shorter flight time would reduce the effect other variables, wind, distance, altitude, etc.
-
18" looked like the longest Wilson? I was thinking more like 24". Is the 1:10 good for 75gr to 95gr bullets?
-
I'll do the .2 on the ladder, already have 60 RP's and 20 FC factory sharps prepped, all fired through this barrel. Also pulled 5 of the 100 gr Swine Smashers, left the 25.5 gr factory ball powder, going to seat some 100gr Hornadys . Same with 5 of the factory 87gr FMJs, they had 28gr powder going to replace with 87gr Hotcores.
-
Any talk good or bad on BHW barrels?
-
I'm at 23.3gr, how much hotter do you think I could go? Thinking ladder up .3 increments to 24.2 if the case volume is there, see if the groups hold. Like to see 2700 fps.
-
Yes, had some good loads. and some not so good. The Barnes TTSX were the worst, patterning not grouping. Moved on after 6-7 rounds. The Game Kings and Sierras were good, the Factory Swine Smashers wouldn't feed for crap. Like they stick in the feed ramps, need to open them up just a bit maybe. Probably just pull them and re-load with GK's. Also thinking to go a little hotter with the RL-7, produced the best groups but lacking velocity. Clean and resize the brass and narrow it down a little bit more next time, maybe without the crosswinds. 16" Barrel Wolf Small Rifle Primers RP .223 brass Velocity measured with a LabRadar 6" from muzzle Gusty winds 5-15 mph Temp 50deg F Bullet Weight Powder Charge Shots Average Spread SD Factory Sharps 87gr SP 87gr 5 2699 47 19.8 Baseline. Take the decoys and the Benelli out tomorrow!

It has been raining every day in Seattle since sometime in December, finally got out to the range this morning with the 25-45. Tide was in a bit!

Hello, All Next build I'm thinking a long range 243. Not too concerned about weight. X-Caliber has some good barrel options but open to suggestions. Range: Out to about 1500 yards. Barrel 24? 26? Profile? Twist rate/ Bullet weight? Muzzle device? Thanks-- Al
-
Hello, 308Shooter Welcome to the forum Rifle or Carbine? For sure different buffers. You are sure to get a lot of help here, tell about your build you are planning/ working on. Al
-
Friend just finished a 6.5 build, no mags yet borrowing some of my steel mags so if you want to sell them let me know. He hasn't ordered any yet.
-
Thanks. The Noreen forged looks kind of rough in the pictures, don't see any boss at all around the mag release. No problems at all with the AMT except for the non-OEM look.
-
Have turned out two 308 platform builds using AMT Billet 80% lowers. Mill OK and function properly but clearly the non-OEM lines of a milled billet lower. I want to find a true "Forged" 308 80%, not a "Billet" or "Forged Billet" lower. Plenty of options for forged on AR15 blanks, but can't find one in the 308/ DPMS platform. Second question, anyone use a Noreen 80% 308 lowers? Everything compatible? What other 308 80% lowers are you all having good luck with?
-
I have 3 or 4 of the C products steel mags for 308 and they fit a little looser then the Magpuls, function quite well in a couple different builds.
