  1. There's a reason K&N makes no claims for filtering anything. Or they didn't years ago (20?) when I was comparing brands of reduced "drag" air filters.
  2. Thanks gents!
  3. Good question. I did a net search for it and couldn't find it. Or at least not at a site that looked like it was open for business.
  4. Everybody has their personal favorite lube and there's a gazillion of them. I use a bunch but the killer for me is cold weather and many just fall down when encountering really cold weather. Yes, even some lubes that I liked in "normal" weather proved to thicken, despite saying they wouldn't, in the cold. I haven't tested it yet, but a friend did, in the cold and with full auto. His one oil that passed was Liberty Lube. Trusting him and his testing I adopted it. Warm weather? Just pick one. I still do that, but not in the really cold weather. https://libertygunlube.com/ Supposedly, DLC coatings also greatly reduce the requirement for lube, but I lube DLC coated parts anyway.
  5. I wrote that the tool cleaned the firing pin. That was a senior moment. It cleaned the the "tail" of the bolt that gets carboned up. Sorry, I don't know what to call it. It gets cleaned by putting it lengthwise between the prongs of the CAT tool. Blems... $18 ... https://catoutdoors.com/product/cat-m4-tool-blemished/
  6. Dodging the issue of whether or not the inside of the BCG should be cleaned... My CAT tool arrived the other day. BTW, prompt shipping. I saved a few bux and got a blem. Who needs a perfect finish on a tool that will get pooped on? OK, I couldn't see any blemish, and definitely none that affect performance. I have a Brownells tool that only does the inside (cylinder) portion of the BCG but it's much larger and looks sorta like a reamer on a screwdriver. That tool does one thing and is intended for use at the bench. The CAT tool is NOT that! It's smaller and flat, it could easily fit in a GI nylon M16 cleaning kit. My BCG was clean inside so the portion that cleans inside wasn't of much use and neither was the patch slot but clearly would do the job. I thought the firing pin was clean but that portion of the tool got down to the radius and I could feel the carbon coming off. That's all that I was able to test and it worked fine. IF one wants to clean the BCG I would buy this tool over the Brownells tool unless one has a gunsmith shop. Maybe even then. The CAT tool works fine. Is the tool worth $10 more for a perfect finish? I don't think so. My $ saved can be used for other things. I wouldn't even buy a pristine one as a gift, no one would ever know unless you told them or they figure out what the "B" means on UPC tag.
  7. I agree that it'll be a good 100 yard gun. Esp' with supersonics. It'll simplify placing the shot for him and with the right sight in distance should result in point blank range out to 100 yards or close to it. Even if there are 3 ranges for proper bullet placement (close, mid, far) it'll still simplify things. But I don't think that'll be the case. When he gets his deer be sure to talk it up here to let us know. I was just on the BA site and saw that the 10.3" Hansen barrel is on sale for almost 1/2 price. But they can list them as free since they were out of stock. 🙂
  8. That Maker mushroom is exactly why I chose the 85 gr Makers for HD, similar look to the expansion, much different velocity. Oddly, and I know you've run across this info dpete since you're also over on 300blktalk, the 85s have a sweet spot for velocity. Too little v and expansion suffers, too much and the petals peel back "too much" and expansion suffers. There is a Goldilocks zone for velocity. But that's the 85s. I lucked out and got what I wanted right in the Goldilocks zone. Clearly that v consideration doesn't exist for the 200s. Nice looking performance. ARTrooper, the reason I suggested a blast forwarder is because I don't know Wisconsin law and wasn't going to research it. Some states don't allow cans at all for hunting, some allow them, some only with a special permit. If I were to ever hunt with my 300BLK it's much simpler for me to just remove it (they're allowed for hunting with permit) and since I must have something there to get the blast out from under the handguard I'd put a blast forwarder on the end of the barrel. It would also have the positive effect of making the gun at least a pound lighter. The can that is almost always found on mine is a blast can for CQB and isn't hearing safe.
  9. dpete, As Elmer Keith once wrote about lack of hydrostatic shock, "You can eat all the way to the hole.". Meaning the bullet hole. Do you find that? The shots you describe if well taken could be just as deadly (CNS, head, neck) with a non-expanding bullet but of course for a .30 to go to 1" makes for more opportunity to hit something critical if one is slightly off.
  10. I shoot with another older gent and one match he was getting malfunctions. So I asked him when the last time was that he cleaned it. The answer was "Never.". I asked how many rounds were through it and he told me 20k. He further stated that it was time to bring it to a gunsmith for cleaning. Sure, firearms can be over cleaned and destroyed by it. Just look at the rifles in the military and how muzzles are belled by GIs running the jointed rods in and out of the muzzle hundreds of times. But I nearly embarrassed my undies when he told me that. Yeah, that would be a really good reason for malfunctions. I didn't ask if he lubed it. BTW, this same gent only changed the battery in his red dot when it ran out of juice. I saw it happen 3x right in the middle of a stage over the years, and he tried to guess where the dot would have been so kept shooting. Good luck with that. He handled it like nothing was wrong, just another day. I'd be kicking myself in the butt.
  11. Yeah, it'll work fine. 👍 I load 85 grain Trex Makers for my HD load. 1k ft/lbs and 2300fps, pretty good accuracy out to 50 yards only because I haven't shot them further. The tests I've seen in gel convinced me of the bullet at that velocity. In a 16" they can go faster, but I wanted 2300ish and it just so happened that that's what the barrel gave me and was happiest.
  12. Exactly. You're one with the gun and the job just gets done. It's the fastest way to shoot, just free the mind to allow it to do what it knows to do and keep alert to what needs guidance. Noobs can't do it, it takes lots of practice because it takes experience to wire the submind. The only time it ever effs up on me is if I let the subconscious move me around the stage. I've been known to break the 180 and it's always when I'm in auto pilot. The range is not the place to allow the subconscious to take over those gross movements. It works so good that when I was shooting a 1911 I would have noob shooters call to me and hold 2 fingers an inch apart to tell me where my shots that sounded like full auto were placed in the A zone. How many times have we driven somewhere and don't remember any of it*? Same thing. The subconscious was in charge and we were perfectly safe. Or safe as long as nothing out of the ordinary happened. Then the subconscious would be in a pickle and hopefully call to the conscious mind to take over. Anyone who was in the military during the later years of Vietnam was taught this in the Quick Kill course. It wasn't explained, we were just taught it. Just raise the gun and shoot for the kill faster than what I wrote can be read. Like lightning. When I got out and did some upland bird hunting if I didn't consciously slow myself down all I had was a cloud of feathers in the air and no bird. Google Quick Kill, but it won't explain how it worked inside the body, they'll just explain the mechanics of it. * when sober and not on drugs
  13. Sounds good. Also sounds like an excellent 1st deer gun. An AR pistol was beyond my vision (300Whisper) when I was hunting, and I can no longer hunt, but a 300BLK or Whisper pistol is exactly what I wanted 20 years ago. Just an off the wall question, Your build will be fine, but BA also makes a 10.3" barrel. I wouldn't want a 16" barrel, but an additional 1" of barrel might be worth having for less blast and a hair more velocity at peak pressure. Of course either will work and the cartridge was designed for a complete powder burn in 9" of barrel. I have the 10.3" barrel and while I wouldn't want a 16" barrel, I do look longingly at the velocities they achieve that I just can't hope to get. I doubt you'd see any appreciable difference in handling with an extra inch of barrel from 9-10". To help your son and further reduce blast near the face an inexpensive "blast forwarder" can be screwed on the end. They can be bought as such or if the "oil trap" people still exist online that would work and maybe be less $. All that's required is a female thread at one end and a hollow tube to get the blast out in front. He'll need to pick his shot, but I would write that no matter what he was shooting. Plus he would have the advantage of subsonic loads to reduce meat damage, again, picking the shot. Over on 300BLKTalk.com there is an incredible amount of data for loads and such and people using it effectively. Not all bullets expand at the velocity we can achieve and they've tested lots of them. Of course there are folks here doing the same in the 300BLK section. If ATF does get around to completing brandons evil on arm braces you could SBR it and then put a real stock on it. Yes, I know that not everyone wants to be in the register and it's just plain wrong, but it had to be mentioned as a possibility.
  14. Precisely! I've been training with the same (well the same within a broad spectrum) gear for 20+ years. I don't need to think about it, it's hard wired into my subconscious. That's exactly why I compete and suggest to others that they do the same. My conscious mind moves me around the course unless I DQ, then it was the subconscious in charge. The conscious also makes mandatory mag changes, the actual trigger safety and shooting is automatic. The trigger? Finger comes off automatically and goes onto the frame, then goes back on as needed and applies pressure to prep for the shot, then a bit more to make the shot when things are right. So a light trigger? Makes no difference since the finger isn't on it until a shot is intended. But as far as clearing my home? Only if society has broken down, like what happened in Seattle 2 years ago. My job is to keep the wife safe in the safe room and to set up the 911 recording for my defense via speaker phone. I'll let the cops clear the house after I throw them the keys out the window so that they don't need to break the entrance. If I'm not forced to shoot that's a gunfight I always win. I just hope the invader doesn't kill the dogs. That would REALLY piss me off! But knowing the dogs as I do the invader would want to kill them so as to stop blood loss. With a Seattle scenario, yes, I'd need to clear my own home. I'd also do what I could to set up my defense 'cause until the evidence is seen and maybe after, if shooting starts the worst is assumed and charged. For those who read over it, I strongly suggest competition to get the subconscious involved in the stuff it can do to lighten the workload for the conscious mind. Too much for it to handle and one freezes.

I must be going nuts! I responded to this thread twice. Could someone remove my response above this post? Thanks.
  16. This has some dust on it but OK... No matter the use I'm a trigger snob and I admit it. I have far too many rounds fired with excellent triggers to suffer a less than really good trigger. If the trigger is less than superb it's the first thing I will change on a new firearm. Can a trigger be too light? Yes. I have a trigger in an Encore that is wayyyy too light. But I know to do as I always do and don't put my finger on it until I want to discharge it. I need to send it back to have it made a bit heavier. The weight that sets it off has to be measured in ounces but I just never checked it. I should. On my competition guns I must have a crisp light trigger with a short reset. I get to the point with them that I know exactly when they will break. Every once in awhile I'll put a laser on my PCC for USPSA and I had one gent come up to me and state, "The dot moves all over never settling down and I have no idea how you do it, but there's the proof.". He indicated my targets that had all fast A zone hits. The key is knowing when the gun will discharge and just being on target at that moment. I don't even see the movement that he saw, I'm moving too fast to see it. Like you 98Z I see parallels between competition and a home invasion and why would I have one set up for competition and another lesser trigger for when lives are in the balance? That having been written I do have a heavier trigger in my EDC handgun than in my comp' handgun. I don't know why, I think I succumbed to the thoughts of others about it. But it's still a really good trigger. I did put a trigger on my HD AR handgun that has a really superb trigger and gives a heavier than spec' hammer strike. I haven't had a light primer strike in decades. The last was on a S&W revolver that had tension removed from the hammer spring, but I want to make sure hence that trigger (Hiperfire Genesis).

Welcome to the forum from central Maine!
  18. The DIs impressed upon me the importance of a clean M16. I'll probably never be able to have a filthy weapon ever again. Due to that training I always clean inside the BCG. FWIW, Blems of the CAT tool are available for a substantial price reduction. As one of the reviews stated, or what I got from it, it's to be used, not to be looked at.

  20. And another thing....! 😊 Just on a practical level. NJ enacted a ban on "high capacity" mags. They could be taken out of state or turned in to the state police. Last I heard the number turned in to the cops was really easy to remember... zero. NY enacted some sort of law against "assault rifles" or some such and they figure 5% got turned in. I figure if there was a ban nationwide the feds would get the middle finger salute, not by all, but by most. On top of that it would be tossed out by SCOTUS but even if it wasn't there is always the middle finger and Molon Labe. I suspect they'd find it unenforceable with lots of turn over of the enforcers, esp' when they and their families are living in the general population. That doesn't mean they won't try it just to make life miserable and give themselves pats on the back.
  21. It's about power and the left will do anything, and I do mean anything to attain it. Throughout history it has always been the left that has mass murdered and destroyed. Of course they want us to believe it's us that do it but that's just another lie for the folks with mush for brains to believe. That's why they make the claim that the nazis were from the right. It's also why I capitalized "SOCIALISTS" in my post above when I mentioned them. They were from the left. Communism, socialism, totalitarians, they're all from the left. Schools don't teach what the lone right and left actually means. Left is an absence of freedom and to the right is 100% freedom. It's not the left and right aisle in Congress as some would have us believe though that delineation does also exist. So what will the left do? Don't believe your lying eyes, those were peaceful demonstrations when the left was burning Seattle and other cities 2 years ago. They will absolutely destroy the USA and take their chances on reshuffling the deck in the hope that they will get more power. They'll abandon civilians in Afghanistan and then claim they had no choice or ignore the complaints about the move. Life? Totally meaningless to them. They worship the creation and not the Creator as brandon is now proving by forcing the price of heating and other fuels to rise. That has the potential, along with inflation, to run away and destroy us all in the effort to protect the planet from the man made global warming myth. Again, they desire power and will do anything to attain it. Get in their way and you won't even hear a "Whoops!" as they roll over us. They do not care. Oh, and they'll destroy their own adherents just as fast as they will us; it makes no difference to them. Lying? All the time and right to your face even when they know that you know the truth. What goes on in their heads? One, they think that the folks who have tried what they want to try just weren't as smart as they are today. Of course that's incorrect. It's also satans main means of bringing about a fall. What else goes on in their heads? I ran across a statistic re: mental illness; conservatives vs the left and It was something like 6x more loonies come from the left. I mentioned that on another forum and someone, a psychiatrist or psychologist, responded and stated that near as he could guesstimate of his clients approx' 90+% were leftists and further stated that the % held true across the country. That's what we're fighting. I think there are other things going on as well on a spiritual level.
  22. Thanks for the update. I didn't think you'd get it to work without trying magic. When I was loading subsonic .308 it was in a bolt gun. When I was loading subsonic .223 in an AR (Sierra 80s) I had the same issue you did with .308. I accepted that I was going to have a single shot AR with that ammo. There's just no way to keep port pressure high enough if it has rifle gas. Then I got a barrel in .223 and started to load 33gr subs that are hellyweird silent with a can. Subsonic in a semi takes something special. Re: 300BLK. Mine has pistol gas and even with that not all factory subs will function. OK, that might be too strong a wording. The 1st ones I tried, S&B 220s, wouldn't function. So I just wrote all of them off and decided to cast my own heavy bullets and reload for my gun. Now subs and supers work fine with no adjustment of anything on the gun. Of course the adjustments are all happening at the loading bench. FWIW, I was discussing 300BLK with a gent at the LGS just hours ago. I decided years ago that I REALLY(!) liked the cartridge. The gent mentioned how much he likes it without me even asking. On paper it's a dog compared to other cartridges but for what it does it's really good at it. It's the handgun I wished I had for years when I was able to hunt.
  23. It's not about crime and never has been; those words are just camouflage. It's about politicians who are corrupt and screwing the country for their evil power grab trying to remove the peasants pitchforks so that they can't storm the castle. Todays pitchforks are MSRs and they know that and fear them. That's why the left has such nightmares about Jan 6 and call it an insurrection. They've been fearing that day for decades and caught a glimpse of it. The "insurrectionists" are being made an example of to scare anymore of that sort of behavior and thinking out of the rest of us. But it's multifaceted. The founding of the USA also gave the planet something other than exclusively peasants and rulers and the rulers have never liked having anyone with enough income to actually do more than merely scrape together their next meal. The middle economic class needs to be destroyed. That'll come next. The liberty teeth of the peasants (in their eyes that's us) need to be taken from us so that there is no push back when the self styled ruling class makes their move. The carousel is going around and they have their finger out to grab the brass ring, except we're waking up. It's exactly what they have feared all along.
  24. Thanks. I never thought of checking on Amazon. LCG needs to update their site, or maybe I misunderstood what they have listed on it.
  25. 300BLK cases I have plenty of. I was thinking about trimming them. At least the cartridge isn't listed on their site. Is that an oversight on their part?
