The typical 308 AR isn't piston driven (though a select few are), rather are Direct Impingement systems and thus aren't as adversely affected by overgassing. Semi-autos like the M1 and it's variants can be sensitive to the issues you are talking about, but the average large-frame AR probably won't be unless it's a piston-driven system. I'd venture to say that outside of shooting suppressed, off-the-shelf ammo won't be a concern with regard to a DI gas system.

The answer to all of those questions is a definite and emphatic NO. You should be far more wary of shooting handloads through your 308 AR than off-the-shelf ammo.

I got to the shop ready to do my bit, and the whole thing fell apart piece by piece, and ended up with the machines being needed for work more pressing than mine. So, it looks like I'm going to be making attempt #2 at this project next weekend. Dammit all!

You're right on brother, 20 degree taper and a minimum rear shoulder height of .920. The collar is going to be .936 so that my gas block will still slip over it with it in place, has a female 45 degree chamfer in the rear to match the profile of the front of the gas block shoulder. Overall length is 1.066 and on the front is the 20 degree gas seal taper coming rearward. Here's the drawing that Daniel Dregne sent me:

I'm going to the machine shop tomorrow to cut the taper attachment for my barrel so I can attach my suppressor. This has been a long time coming, and I'm really excited. Keep your fingers crossed that I get the part right on the first go. If it all goes well, I'll be updating my suppressor timeline thread with some range pics/video.

Slam firing is possible but seems improbable outside of extremely sensitive primers. The firing pins in these beasts are pretty light, and rely on a good strong hammer spring.
