Normally I'd suggest a 15" JP VTAC rail, but only if you were sticking to killing paper. Since you want to hunt too, that means you'll be humpin' the rifle all over. Then I suggest the Apex CNC rifle length. The Apex CNC will give you plenty of barrel protection and is very light weight. You can add rails if your wish, or just stick to the cylindrical look. Personally I suggest Magpul MOE polymer rails, if you ever need them. You can put rails at 12, 1, 3, 6, 9, and 11 o clock. It also comes with preinstalled QD holes at both ends of the receiver. I doubt anyone is selling theirs, so if you know a place to find one I'd be much appreciative. I saw Troy and VTAC have them in stock for $205. Other sites are advertising much lower prices, but they are out of stock.

A crush washer could work too. Or another shim. I shy away from locktite. It's too much work for me to undo. Blame it on my commitment-phobia. I can't commit to a long term relationship like that :) Plus it'd make me a hypocrite for yelling at my friends for using locktite and then asking me to work on their stuff. <laughs>

I have knocked around the idea of a 14.5" (16" OAL) .260 Rem. I think that would be the ultimate California hunting rifle.
