16 inch barrel vs 18 inch.
Robocop1051 replied to Bullseyeshooter's topic in AR-10 General, Technical Discussion
About 60-80 fps... Depending on the bullet, that's it. A Sierra 168gr BTHP .308 only requires 15.5 inches of barrel for a complete burn of the powder contained in the cartridge. The bullet gains the most speed before the initial burn is completed. After the burn, the bullet only relys on the expansion of the already burnt gas to propel it. The increase becomes quite minimal very fast afterwards. I say if 16" is too short, then you might as well go for a 24". The 16" barrel should hold most match grade ammo at supersonic velocity up to 500-600 yards. Supersonic speeds can be guesstimated at about 100 yards per inch of barrel after. Keeping your bullet supersonic beyond 1,000 yards with a 24" barrel The first five inches are the most important, as the bullet quickly jumps to about 1550 fps. From that point the bullet gains another 140 fps per inch till it reaches about 2200 fps at about the 10 inch mark . At 15.5" (or 16")you should be shooting around 2500 fps , meaning an average of 100 fps per inch from the 12" mark. After that point you will generally only gain about 40-30 fps per inch tapering off gradually as the barrel gets longer. At 20" you should be flying at approx 2600 fps. With a high estimated 2700 fps at 24" You have really maxed the bullet out at 24". I have seen nearly the exact same numbers from 24" and 26" barrels using the same bullet. -
Skeeter, we know your situation all to well. I keep watering a MOE handguard hoping it will grow into a 300blk.

Ok I was mistaken. It's my clutch, not tranny. They still want $1500 for the repair :'( I drive a 03 Mits Lancer (my commuter). Luckily I have a contact who builds/races Mits Evo's. He says he might be able to help me out for much cheaper.

Wouldn't it just be nice for Murphy's Law to not apply just once? I worked a ton of overtime lately, lived a very meager lifestyle for a few weeks, and managed to save up a nice little stockpile for holidays and a little gun fun :auto: ... My transmission took a dookie on me yesterday <nutkick> ... This isn't going to be a cheap fix. FML!!! >:(

Sounds great! I own a couple older Redfields that I mounted on hunting rifles. They never failed me. Nothing fancy. Trustworthy like an old truck.

Troy puts one tritium capsule in the front and two in the rear.

Good to have you here. Welcome.

IMHO I say you decide what you ultimately want from a 308 rifle. Do you want a hunter? A plinker? A tactical piece? Or a distance shooter? After that you weigh the options of the two rifles as to which will get you to that goal faster. If there are rifle specifics that you must absolutely have, make sure they're available for your choice. There is no one sure answer to give you here. Armalite, DPMS, KAC, etc... They all make perfectly fine rifles. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, I live in an anti-Armalite state so my option was made for me.

The Select barrel had very similar stats to the Daniel Defense barrels. That is what initially intrigued me. The only problem was they didn't say where exactly they came from. The Match barrels are stamped ".223 Wylde W B". I've never known Wilson to do anything halfassed. If it performs as they say, I'm already impressed. Here's a sneak peek till I can get to my work bench.

What do you have on order or in the mail?
Robocop1051 replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
I know what you mean. In April my pre-order was about $425. A few weeks ago SI-D raised the pre-order price to $600. I can only imagine the price after a huge public release. -
Not any longer. Sold the Select barrel for a decent price. Got the Match barrel for $221 shipped.

I feel I speak for the majority when I say... BOTH

You and me both brother! I ordered mine in April. The good news is the carriers are about done. The bolts were supposedly still being shot peened, then off to NiB coating. -
I was recently in the market for a new barrel. I couldn't beat the prices and availability that Rainier provided. I wasn't sure what I wanted at first, and jumped on the budget train for a "Rainier Select" barrel. I got the barrel 2 days later. It looked good. 1:8 twist, 5.56 chambered and polygonal rifling. The barrel seemed a little rough though. Not bad, just not 100%. I couldn't see the $200 jump to the Ultra Match barrel. Last week Rainier brought out a limited run of "Rainier Match" barrels. The cost difference between the Select and the Match was minuscule. I quickly stripped off my unfired Select barrel, sold it online, and ordered the Match. If packaging is any start to a first impression, then wow! The Match barrel came wrapped in what can best be described as a compression sleeve. Upon my first inspection the quality difference from the Select is overwhelming. Here is what Rainier Arms writes: I hope to have pictures for you guys soon.

I looked up your Spike's selections, and none of them are 308 specific. I'd ditch the buffer and spacer and go with a standard heavy buffer. Also, your Spike's Enhanced LPK is going to need 308 take down pin, pivot pin, and a bolt catch. -
It happened to me. 300 miles from home, and in the middle of nowhere. Small town local hardware store had my prescription. You won't always find what you're used to, but at least you'll find something.

I have owned Aimpoint and EOTech sights. I have to stand on all the same points as 98. I too am in the market for a new sight. If I can get over the large dot I may go for the Aimpoint T1, otherwise I'm leaning towards the XPS 2.0 Reticle over battery life in my opinion. I like the 1:65 reticle over a 3+ MOA dot.

I'd like to see more high performance parts, like NiB/TiN coated BCG's and hammers. I'd like to see more combat oriented/specific parts. Most 308 parts are designed towards target/distance shooting. As far as weight goes. My 308 weighs less than my 223. As far as cost, my rifles are all pretty equal.

I'm beginning to think this is a sneaky trick to get a peek at my long awaited work in progress. I've only been building my rifle for about a year! Sorry it still isn't complete... In fact this is the most I have ever put it together! Since this is just a mock build, please try to imagine the completed rifle with my 17" carbon wrapped barrel and SI Defense BCG. My wife appropriately calls this rifle my "Eleanor". (coupled with my Springfield Armory TRP Operator)

I wear Mernickle leather holsters. No retention on mine, except for their custom fit. Very sexy, hand made, work. I've met the Mernickle family (from Carson, NV) and prefer to support the small business.
