  1. It's significant because the late, former NRA president, the Omega Man himself, Charlton Heston starred in those movies. My screen name on everything is "ROBOCOP1051". makes it simple to find me.
  2. Every red-blooded, gun-lovin, blue-state-hatin, beef-eatin American should know what Soylent Green is, who Ben Hur is, and about the Planet of the Apes. On another note: I'm a HUGE Fallout fan! As well as most FPS, especially the CoD series. I'm looking forward to the new MW3 and Skyrim. I'm mostly on Xbox live, although sometimes I can be found on PS3 too. Usually not into PC stuff, unless it's proprietary (or the coming Starwars game).
  3. If this were a bolt rifle discussion and you were considering the Win Mag or the Rem Ultra Mag (or web the Weatherby)... Then I'd say the .338 is over kill for a whitetail. The .338 Fed (I have not shot this yet) benches just a bit hotter than the .308. If you are a trophy hunter, expecting to take that extra long shot, I'm positive the .338 will do the job for you. You can fling that heavy bullet a lot further. The .308 really is a cross spectrum range of animals. You can down load to 130gr and pop a 45lbs coyote, or you can hot load a 180gr and blast a 350lbs bear. It's really the perfect California cartridge (IMO). The .338 really should try to stay above the 200lbs mark. Your whitetails are a lot bigger than our scrawny coastal blacktails.
  4. The .338 (or 8.5mm) is a big round. I would equate it to a larger game load, like elk. My 308 bolt rifle has been infallible in killing many a (Cali) black bear, pig and deer (CA-black tail and CO-mule). My family has used the .338 bullet (in various designs) to take brown bears, caribou and moose in bigger North America hunts. The shot placement argument can be made about nearly every caliber. They all kill, and none kill more dead than the other. The fact remains in hunting we don't always get that "perfect" shot. Hence the reason for greater ballistics.
  5. Great lookin boom stock Mac! <thumbsup> If you want to try a Magpul LR-20 in that JD we'll have to meet up sometime.
  6. So I finally mounted my BUIS. My build was to make a rifle as compact as possible without crossing into the SBR realm. Those pictures will come eventually... I actually really like these sights, but I've been spoiled by my Magpul MBUS. I like how low they are. I like how quick the DOA lines up. I don't like how difficult they are to deploy. The MBUS is a quick snap then just push them back into place. The Troy sights are tough to lift into place then you have to depress a lock to put them back. I hear guys say that they will trust their lives on Troy BUIS sights before they will on the plastic MBUS... I can't fault the Magpul design. For the money spent, I think the Magpul is a perfect sight. Add the Trijicon tritium front sight post and you have something comparable to the Troy tritium for much less. I'm not dissatisfied with the Troy BUIS, but I'm not overwhelmingly satisfied to the point that I think I'll replace my GenII MBUS set.
  7. Also check out the Ace Ultra Lite stock. It looks similar, and I'm pretty sure it's already a fixed stock. It's very similar to the ARFX, but without the bottom tube.
  8. Subsonic gets tricky with gas. I would stick to a carbine length gas system with an adjustable gas block. Are you planning on shooting with a silencer too? I see Sierra is making a .338 300gr bullet now. <thumbsup> It shouldn't be too large of a task. The head space is the same/similar to the .308 and the bolt should be the same too. That 300gr might be too long for most mags though. For the barrel you'll need a 308 specific blank and turn it to the profile you wish. I'm pretty sure the AR15 blanks are different and will be too narrow. Another route would be to just bore out a .308 barrel to the .338. That has been an option given to me if I planned on switching to the .338 Fed. Question: Why not the .338 Federal? It's not a wildcat round and it's already proven to work.
  9. I started assembling another "black rifle". This is a Mega Arms AR15 with a Rainier 14.5" mid barrel, DD 12.0 FSPM and AA mid length piston. This piston and handguard combo do NOT like each other! Used my rotary tool to get the cuts started on the HG, then diamond files to finish off the cuts. Loooong pain-staking work to make four even notches in the bottom of the handguard. I had to install and remove the HG about 7 or 8 times to get the fit right. After about 4 hours of filing and fitting, I finally got the gap correct, all the parts installed, and all the bolts cranked down real tight.... That is about the time that I remember that I only put the barrel nut on hand tight.... CRAAP!!!! <nutkick> I need a break.
  10. Ok, I'm a liar. I ordered a CWS and a Battlecomp v1.5 instead... Damn you internet! Dropped my BCG in a tub of full synthetic instead...
  11. Ever since SI Defence sent my 308 "Fail Zero" receiver, I have been in love with NiB. Without trying emasculate my rifle, the NiB is really silky smooth. I knocked the idea around for a while and finally pulled the trigger this week. I shot an email to WMD Guns and they said they would NiB coat my Adam Arms Piston kit. They quoted me $120 to finish the bolt, the carrier and the piston/cup. I'm strangely comfortable with the cost and should be sending my parts in in the next few days.
  12. That's one hell of a "reach-out-and-touch-someone" upper. I look forward to seeing the finished product.
  13. Besides my trusty .308 bolt rifle, I've hunted a lot with my .270 Win (not WSM) and .257 Roberts. I was very excited to see the 6.5 and 6.8 AR-15's come out. What upset me was their casing design, requiring new magazines and new bolts. Shooting the 270 WSM in the larger format AR seems hot, but I'd be more inclined to shoot the .260 Rem or the .338 Fed instead. Simply because I'd have more compatible parts available to me. The bolt face for the 270 WSM is considerably larger (@ .535) than the .308 version (@ .473). While the bullet may perform flawlessly, I think you may run into bolt stamina issues, especially with a short mag beating on it. I'm not saying a 270 WSM is a bad idea, I love it, I just wanted to point out where your more expensive replacement parts would be.
  14. Edge, I'm headed to the Reno, NV gun show on 11/13. If you're still looking by then, I'll keep the look out for you.
  15. I think the big question for me is, will I dip my Soylent Green in ranch, BBQ or honey mustard?
  16. You need the Matech rear sight coupled with a KNS crosshair front sight post in the FSB.
  17. How far do you plan on shooting? I ask because an 18" target barrel should out shoot a longer barrel of the same diameter, within 500 yards. Now if you plan to shoot 1000 yards you'll want the extra fps of the 24"er. We discussed this same topic here
  18. Oh boy, new Adams Arms mid length piston kit coming from Rainier!! I'm hoping it will be installed by the end of the week.... Now I wait...
  19. Have you looked at Evolution Gun Works? I have heard of them doing individual jobs before... Just be prepared for $$$.
  20. Wow, that's good to know. They look good for the casual shooter, but I wouldn't swear by them in a hot zone. Even Magpul PTS looks to be of a higher quality. I wonder why cut back on quality? Especially when the product is already so inexpensive? At least AR10 guys can have polymer mags...
  21. I like the looks of those OA-10 rifles. Simple design with some upgraded parts. Those krauts never cease to amaze me with their engineering. I'm especially interested in their AR10 format polymer magazines. They look very much like a Magpul LR-20, with a window... Yet they state repeatedly that they have no links to Magpul and are completely independent. Here they are.
  22. Oh good luck with that one. I asked a DPMS distributor about them when they came out, he said the same thing to me. I still haven't seen on in person. Ive seen plenty of LWRC versions, but no DPMS. I really like that freefloat they made. I tried just getting that part and ran into the same snags.
  23. If you only plan on shooting store bought .308 ammo (Winchester, Federal, etc. ) an AR15 trigger/hammer is generally enough. If you plan on ever shooting NATO 7.62 ammo, you'll want the 308 specific trigger. The primers are thicker due to the style of packaging/storage militaries use. Really the biggest difference you will see is the size of the hammer on a .308 version. The triggers and springs look to be the same for the most part. The slightly larger 308 hammers add the guaranteed ignition to mil ammo.
  24. If you're close enough to the shop, I'd suggest looking into JD Machine in San Diego.
  25. I can't wait to share my biased opinions! <thumbsup>
