Considering a Mega Machine AR and MA-TEN Group Buy offering
98Z5V replied to branson1369's topic in For Sale or Trade
branson1369 hasn't been on the board here for over a month - some of you guys with comms with him, ask him to check in again... <thumbsup> -
Well, today after work I hauled ass to my favorite FFL, just to pick up some ammo for my Sunday-Monday shootfest (helmet-cam footage to follow, through the river wash... ;D). Lo and Behold, before my very eyes, they have the Barrett 98B sitting there. For $4,250. I can get it from them for less. Oh, it's .338 Lapua Magnum, too - I didn't mention thaat yet. So, before I walked in there, having already known where this thread was gonna go, I was convinced that I'm building a 700 bolt on this chassis. It wasn't gonna be a .308 Win 700, either. :o So, guys, whaddya want me to do here? Build this 700 chassis, or let it get in the way of the Barrett 98B .338 LM? <dontknow> Tell me where I'm going here, ya bunch of rat-bastage instigators... <munch> <laughs>

DPMS308 FEEDING PROBLEMS
98Z5V replied to charlie52usaf's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Just a bit of info for everyone else - there is no such animal as an "A2 receiver extension" - buffer tube, whatever the names are that come up. Real name is "Receiver Extension." There is only an AR-15 Receiver Extension, when talking about the rifle-length tubes. It's the original, and the only - there isn't one that's longer, or A2 length. All the A2 is, is the A1 or "standard" rifle extension with a 5/8" spacer, and a 5/8" longer buttstock screw (hollow through the center). So, in short, don't waste a metric poop-ton of time trying to search out a specific receiver extension that must be A2 length. You'll find a unicorn before you find that thing. Just hunt for, and easily find an A1 length, or "standard" rifle receiver extension, and you'll save some serious heartache. The Magpul PRS, both AR-15 and .308 AR, use the A1 extension, for what it's worth. -
Fire up some research on the military issued sizes, and I'll grab some woodland rip-stops for you. There's XS, S, M, L, XL on the normal sizes, but then there's length added into those sizes, too. Short, Regular, Long, then the crazy stuff. I never did meet anyone that had a set of XL, XS (Extra Large, Extra Short) uniforms, though... <laughs> I used to wear Medium Regular tops, but switched them all out to Large Short to keep the sleeve length the same, but give more "breathability" in the roomier top. Things to think about... <thumbsup>

I'm not so happy with you about right now... :o <laughs>

DPMS308 FEEDING PROBLEMS
98Z5V replied to charlie52usaf's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
It's not the tube, brother. That (receiver extension, buffer tube, etc.) is the same for the 15 and the .308. It's the actual buffer. The AR-15 rifle buffer is 5.900" long, and the .308 AR rifle buffer is 5.200" long. that 0.700" difference in buffer length is the 1/2" (approx.) that was screwing you. The spring rates and lengths of the 15 vs. .308 buffer springs are different, too. Don't run an AR-15 rifle spring in a .308. It's nowhere near strong enough to handle the .308 Win loads. -
Tell me what you're looking for specifically, and I might be able to help out with something. <thumbsup>

I just found out about this today - with the email from Brownells - and was coming in here to post this info... <lmao> <thumbsup> I already started looking for 700 actions... <laughs>

Fulton Armory is one of the pioneers in M1A accuracy. Clint can tune those guns. <thumbsup>

This one goes hand-in-hand with what you just posted: http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2009/12/09/larue-osr-now-called-obr-optimized-battle-rifle/ Additionally, Dick Swan applied for a patent as the inventor of spring-loaded back-up sights. MagPul saw the writing on the wall with that one, and promptly filed a lawsuit against him - before he filed against them. MagPul was smart, on that one, big time. That's what the ARMS -n- MagPul suit is about, right there. There's many reasons I won't run ARMS mounts, the biggest being I've used them in the past because they were issued to me, and it's all I had or could use - I have experience with them. Many of the other reasons I won't run them now, when I pay for my own stuff, has already been mentioned in this thread.

MAGPUL MIAD GRIP WEDGE - Finally at Brownells
98Z5V replied to imschur's topic in Gear & Accessories
Grip Wedge should only be necessary on Armalite-based .308s. It won't fit on the DPMS-based platforms unless you perform major surgery to it. <dontknow> -
DPMS308 FEEDING PROBLEMS
98Z5V replied to charlie52usaf's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
You're using an AR-15 rifle buffer. You need to be using a .308 AR-specific rifle buffer (and .308-specific spring). <thumbsup> This was the give-away: -
THAT. IS. NICE!
-
I've seen quite a few guys run the AAC 762SD on a 5.56 gun. <thumbsup> I'm not sure what started it, but the economics of it make sense. Expensive can, tax stamp - works on both calibers. One can for the ARs, running multiple QA mounts.

rsilvers, it's good to see you here - welcome, by the way. <thumbsup> Please stick around and contribute whenever possible. Awesome. ;D

Centerline of bore to rail height?
98Z5V replied to Cw434's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Centerline of bore to top of rail, on my DPMS old style (2.063") is 1.35". New height uppers are 2.003", as discussed here: http://308ar.com/forum/index.php/topic,260.0.html I imagine, based on the math, that your centerline of bore to top of rail measurement would be around 1.29". -
Looks like it shares most of the design benefits of their bullpup forward-ejecting 14-round shotgun. I like that shotgun... ;D
-
You are gonna LOVE that trigger, man. <thumbsup> I look forward to your impressions of it.

That rifle turned out NICE! <thumbsup> Excellent job!

One more tidbit - we've seen some problems, or "difficulties" here when mixing and matching different brands of the upper and lower receivers on the DPMS-based builds. Once you decide on a pattern, it would be best to use the same manufacturer for the upper and lower receivers. It wouldn't necessarily always cause you some grief, but the potential is there when you mix and match.
-
Consider the differences in the basic platform to help you decide what brand to purchase. There are two major design differences, plus one other on top of that. The majors are the Armalite AR-10 platform and the DPMS LR-308 platform. The probable third type would be the Rock River Arms type. It gets a little more complicated with a couple brands that share some of the design attributes between the Armalite and DPMS patterns, and those would be the SR-25 "pattern" (Stoner SR-25, Knight's Armament). Obviously, Knight's has that one, and the Mega Machine upper and lower set follows that, too. As far as the two basic patterns go (Armalite and DPMS), there are many options available for them, with rails, stocks, optics mounts, grips, etc. The Armalite will only use Armalite magazines, while the DPMS will use DPMS mags, C-Products mags, and MagPul LR-20 mags. Barrel nut threading is different on both, so rail/freefloat handguard choices need to match the upper receiver threading type. Specific info for you - if you're going for a long-range target gun that will also hunt, a decent compromise on barrel length will be around 18", and several barrel manufacturers make barrels for both types that are around that. If the most it will get is a bipod and scope, then you can save a little weight by using a freefloat tube instead of a quad-rail type handguard.

Alright - where's the pistola?... :o ;D
-
I like that ammo - it shoot well for me. Good shooting. <thumbsup>
-
Yep, give it up. Show me your Known Distance (KD) Range that you shoot on. Doesn't matter how far or long is it - just whatever it is that you shoot on. Size doesn't matter, here - just the fact that you shoot - matters. <thumbsup> Here's what's close to me. I live in a f-ing desert, so I can basically shoot what I want, and if I pace it off, I could say it's "xx" distance. This one is locally run, quite well I might add, and it's almost always open. Love this place. <thumbsup>
