  1. Sounds alot like the difference between a 5.56 charging handle and a .308 charging handle to me. That's about the length difference between the two flavors. I actually ran an Armalite AR-10 charging handle in my DPMS-based .308 for a few days, whilst waiting for the arrival of my BCM Gunfighter .308 large-latch handle. The factory Armalite part fit my DPMS just fine. The Armalite handle and the Gunfighter handle are the same length. I don't have a stock DPMS .308 handle to compare anything to, however.
  2. I'm pretty sure that if you use the JP Low Mass bolt carrier, you need to use the rest of the parts that are designed as the group. The whole Low Mass Operating System, so Low Mass Buffer and buffer spring, too. Just having a light carrier would make the thing kick more, I'd think.
  3. Hmmm... That's 0.0625". Seems small when I think of AR-15 gas port sizes, but this is a .308. survivalshop (hope you're reading this, man! ;D) - did you happen to measure your gas port hole in your 16" Fulton Krieger rifle-gas barrel? Again guys, this isn't major - it's just my curiousity. :o Nothing bad, I'm just trying to see what the different manufacturers are doing. my Fulton Krieger 18.5" barrel kicks like Van Damme, and I didn't think to measure the gas port hole before I put it all together. I do on every other build since then, though. <thumbsup>
  4. It should be smaller than the hole on the gas block - gas blocks are made to accomodate everything, so it's "worst case scenario" with the holes in them. Made as large as the largest possible drilling of a gas port on a barrel. That way they work on everything out there. I'm just curious about that gas system on a 16" .308 barrel. Gas port size would be critical the shorter you go on the gas system. The 16" Fulton Kreiger barrel with rifle-length gas is the testament to short .308 barrels and long gas systems - with your setup, I'd just like to know what they did with the gas port size in the barrel. If the gas block hasn't been mounted yet, and you can still measure it, that would be very cool. <thumbsup>
  5. Curious to see how the 16" barrel performs with a midlength gas system - did you happen to take a measurement of the gas hole diameter in the barrel before you put it together?
  6. YEAH!!! ;D Man, I thought you were eaten by tigers or lions or something. <dontknow> What do you have for JARD 5.56 triggers, man? I'd love to put one in my 20" gun. <thumbsup>
  7. I've got a handful of the blued steel ones, but only one stainless one. It's never caused a feeding problem for me, ever, but I can't honestly say that I know how much I rotate it into the mix - just haven't kept track of it. I didn't number it because it's the only one I've got.
  8. I don't think Kimber changed the design on the newer ones, but... ;D The McCormick Shooting Star 8 round mags fit my Desert Warrior the best. Just like a Kimber mag. <thumbsup>
  9. You can pick those mag base pads up separately, too. Ironically, I just got 3 more of them yesterday, of the Chip McCormick flavor. <thumbsup> EDIT - You talking about the mag lip at the front, and the interface with the cutout at the bottom of the front strap, in the frame?
  10. I like the extended magwell plate they put on that one. I've been thinking about seeing if they'd sell that through the custom shop - just that piece. <dontknow>
  11. Very nice crowning job. <thumbsup>
  12. Here's what I'm thinking: The shoulder on the barrel us huge. Even if the gas block mounting area is .936, the step is pretty big. Does a "standard" .936 gas block have the gas tube hole covered partially by that big step? If so, that would explain why the DPMS-specific block has a larger wall thickness - both to get the gas tube up high enough to clear the step, and for asthetics (O.D. as large as the fluted portion of the barrel). SASS gas block: If the above is true, then it also requires a special gas tube with a different bend - like ss said up there, I'm betting they didn't go to the R&D trouble to relocate the hole in the upper, and change the gas key. However, also like ss said, anything they do know would come as no surprise at all. <dontknow>
  13. Thanks for the heads up, Doc. <thumbsup> I've got all those NAHC target PDFs saved, so I'll upload them for use. Here's another site that has free downloadable, computer-printer printable targets: http://www.mytargets.com/
  14. Longer, wider, with an extra "bump" in it... All the stuff you never like to hear, really. <dontknow> <lmao> Here's a small pic of the .308 FP, in the BCG breakdown: If I get the time tomorrow, I'll do a side-by-side pic of the 5.56 and the .308 firing pins. <thumbsup>
  15. I'd say you've got your load... <thumbsup> Very nice.
  16. FailZero coating on it sounds VERY nice. I hate to say it in this context, but the SBR bug I'm going through right now has me dreaming of a .308 SBR next... :o <dontknow> Spike's Billet .308 upper and lower (it's on the way sometime in the future) with this BCG and a 12.5" barrel. Suppressed, of course. <thumbsup>
  17. Waaaaay different. Design-wise, similar, but that's about it. Size makes a difference... <lmao>
  18. Oooooh, Doc... Welcome to the circus, man! <thumbsup> <laughs> We'll get into the .308 AR stuff in a little bit - I'm looking at the GT40s right now... :o <munch>
  19. I may be wrong, but what I understand about this .300 Blackout round is it's a combination of the best things about a .30 Cal bullet from a 5.56 case. Not sure on this, but I think the .300 Whisper is a 7.62 x 33 case (not sure on that case length). The traditional 7.62 x 39 is the Russian round -and the actual diameter of that .30 Cal bullet is .311, not a .308 like we are used to using as a ".30 Cal bullet." The 7.62 x 39 USA round is a traditional .30 Cal round, in .308. Case is an upsized .5.56 case with a 39mm length. There is a 7.62 x 40 out there, as a 5.56 gun wildcat round. The Blackout round is a 7.62 x 35 case (upsized 5.56 case) and used a .308 bullet. Suppposedly, this case length is the magic - you can still load .308 bullets to 5.56 mag length, and it maximizes what you can load for a powder charge. It doesn't have the case taper of a 7.62 x 39 round, so it feeds fine from USGI mags (and varients).
  20. Whoops is right! ;D Think maybe someone grabbed the box of Remington ACR lower parts and put the Bushmaster ACRs together - with Remington auto sears?... :o <dontknow>

Amen, brother. <thumbsup> I've got a 3" Kimber Ultra RCP II, a 5" Kimber Desert Warrior, a 5" Kimber (polymer) BP TEN II (double-stack hi-cap mag, even for .45 ACP). I'm currently on the lookout for a 4" Kimber Super Carry Pro to round everything out. AR builds keep getting in my way of ownership of that gun, sadly... :o I have a 5" Taurus PT92 9mm that sits in the back of the safe. It's 21 years old now, and fulfilled it's role as a training gun "as close as I could afford to the issue Beretta 92F pistol." Nowadays, I won't carry anything that doesn't as least start with ".4-something." ;D
  22. In '96 (cold, snowy trip :-[) I was at Ft Rich for the 1st half, then out of Greeley for the 2nd half. When I went back up on '05 (summertime trip ;D), I was staying with a friend on Ft Rich again.
  23. I love Alaska, man. Did a Winter Warfare exercise up there in the beginning of '96 - Jan through March. Went back to get some summertime daylight action in June of 2005. It freaked me out to be sitting outside, thinking it's about 8pm, and find out it's 1:30 in the damn morning... :o Just crack open another one and drive through it... <dontknow> <laughs>
  24. Read this whole thread through - it explains how to do it with a 4-40 set screw, and with a 6-32 set screw. Pics are there for the 4-40, but I didn't add any pics of mine with the 6-32. If there's any questions, fire them off in this thread and I'll get right on them. <thumbsup> http://308ar.com/forum/index.php/topic,74.0.html
  25. That thing looks good already. <thumbsup> Watch out the the MIAD - I'm not sure how CMMG does the takedown detent, but if it's under the grip (and not through the back, like an AR-15), you'll probably have to set-screw it. Very simple process, if that's the case. No worries.
