Suggestions for a free float handguard

I like your rationale... <thumbsup> <lmao> -
The AFG2 is more compact, for sure. The angle seems to be the same, and the "finger grip" insert is in the same place (in relation to how far up from the bottom), but the grip is more compact. It looks like it's shortened up in the grip area in the front, and the base trimmed off the rear. Right now I've only got it on a rail for an ongoing build, so I can't really tell if it will feel "cramped" when gripping it - I've got big fat sausage fingers... :-[ I'll swap it onto an operational gun and check it out. Here's the pics of the AFG2 on the rail, compared to the AFG1 on an operational gun:

I just blew up an entire hour searching through all that - and I think I was only half way through it! ;D <lmao> That is one HELL of a resource, man! Fantastic find... <thumbsup>

Received an FDE AFG 2 this afternoon. I'll get some comparison pics up tomorrow morning. <thumbsup>

OP, O saw that you mentioned this over on SH: Still have the DPMS upper that was on this IRA lower? Maybe it is the fact that the carrier is too far inside the upper receiver. There's a small $50 work-around that might fix this, if that's the case. Tubb Carrier Weight System. Sticks into the back of the carrier. That might be the additional length you'd need to close the gap between the carrier and the buffer. <thumbsup> A quote from the part description: CWS™ also incorporates a flange that serves to secure it in the bolt carrier, but this also significantly reduces carrier overrun past the bolt stop. Reducing the distance the carrier must return to engage the bolt stop extends the life of this part and further reduces the amount of rifle movement apparent to the shooter. This is of special help to the AR-10/SR-25 owner since these rifles are notorious for breaking bolt stops. More info on the product here: http://www.davidtubb.com/ar15_cws.html

Depends. I'm not completely sure what's happening with your rifle, but this might be a possibility: softer spring isn't eating the force and weight of the BCG coming back after firing. Everything is slamming into the end of the receiver extension, then rebounding forward even harder. Check the condition of the little poly bumper on the end of the buffer; see if it's split or cracked anywhere. I've never seen a buffer chewed up like that, so this is all guesswork on my part. The marks have to be coming from the buffer retaining pin, that's a given. The "why" though, I'm trying to figure out myself. The AR-10 spring is one strong, stiff spring. It's not doing that to my buffer. There are lots of guys running that spring, and it doesn't chew up the edges of the buffer. That much I know. Something is causing this, and people here will try to help figure it out - getting a comparison of your rifle spring against a known AR-15 rifle spring will help greatly. <thumbsup>
-
Tubes are the same, buffers are different lengths/weights, and the springs are different tensions/strengths. This chart (from Slash's Heavy Buffers) is an excellent tool to use to compare them all: http://www.heavybuffers.com/

Do you have a known AR-15 rifle length spring to compare the two you have against? I pulled my Fulton AR-10 rifle spring out and compared it to a known AR-15 rifle spring just now. My Fulton spring has 37 coils to it, and it's 3/4" longer than my AR-15 spring. Both are used (well used), and don't meet the relaxed length criteria. There's a definite difference on the 10 spring over the 15 spring, though. Spacing of coils, number of coils, length, stiffness... The 10 spring is much, much stronger than the 15 spring.
-
Aha! I concur! I've had it in the fridge for a few weeks now. There's no such thing as a "bad flavor" of Sam Adams, but the Octoberfest is something I look forward to every year. <thumbsup>
-
Wrong rifle-length spring. The pics you posted over there are AR-15 rifle-length springs (both). Relaxed length matches the AR-15 spring, and AR-15 springs have 44 coils to them. I tried to count the coils on that and came up with 40 - but it's hard to see them and count. Regardless, it's more coils than the AR-10 rifle-length spring should have. AR-10 rifle-length springs should have a relaxed length of 13.75" and have 34 coils to them. Those gouges around the outer edge of the buffer - that thing is beat up pretty good. I'd bet it's from the use of the springs in the pics, probably. What does the end of the bolt carrier look like?

Actually, it kinda is... <lmao> You'll see... Welcome here, man. <thumbsup>

An update to the carbine competition - Colt will not be competing. Basically, every submission will compete against the other, with the winner then going head-to-head against the Colt M4A1. If the winner isn't a "measurable improvement" over the M4A1, then the .mil will keep the Colts. http://www.armytimes.com/news/2010/09/army-competitors-tested-in-carbine-competition-092510w/

Wanting to build an SR-25 clone.

I had the scope already, but factored in that cost to the final number. I nailed the Armalite scope mount on a serious sale (I think the thing ended up costing me about $40), and I already had the KAC rail panels (not factored into the overall cost, if I remember right). The details about that gun are in this thread: http://308ar.com/forum/index.php/topic,130.0.html Ask away about any of it, either in this thread or the linked thread. Outside of catching a few parts on sale (two big pieces of Fulton Armory stuff; BCG and barrel), most of it was careful shopping online, just looking for good prices. <thumbsup> -
Welcome, Mike! Great intro, man. <thumbsup> <lmao>

Exactly. That is the very thing that determines headspace dimensions. Mill the barrel extension wrong, and the headspace is off. That has to happen first - barrel extension milling. After that, once the extension is fixed in place, you have barrel centerline. With that, you can mill for the pin and gas port.

I hope that's not the only reason it's "different..." :o -
Interesting news from MagPul
98Z5V replied to irishmike's topic in AR-10 General, Technical Discussion
I hope they do it, man. You'll see a shitload of 7.62 Noveske 12.5" Leonidas guns downrange. <thumbsup> -
It doesn't add any length to the barrel, if you're wondering about barrel length determination. Barrel length would be from the face of a closed bolt (seated inside the extension), to the end of your barrel. It gets particular if you're running a barrel under the 16" legal minimum, for ATF Tax Stamp (SBR) purposes.

That's right where most of mine have been. That part seems pretty standard. If this thing isn't tapered at all, I'm gonna kick myself in the ass for listening to teh interwebz... :o <dontknow> <lmao> -
That's what I was gonna say... The Rem is a DPMS. <thumbsup>

Toss this into consideration on those prices, man... You can get a .308 AR at a "not-bad" price these days. It doesn't have the rail you need or want, it doesn't have the grip you want, it doesn't have the sights you want, it doesn't have the stock you want, it doesn't have the trigger you want... It can go on forever, man. You can get into the gun cheap(er) now, but you rack up the cost on the parts you really want. Afterwards, you're stuck with a bunch of parts that nobody wants to buy, or it's a bunch of parts that will be "rifle-seeds" for another build... :o And that will be a build that will need all those parts changed out, too... It never ends. >:( Anyway, my point was... check the cost of buying the gun you want, the way you want it. If nothing exists from a manufacturer the way you want it, add up the cost of getting something close plus the parts you need - factoring in the stuff laying around afterwards. That stuff is gonna cost you, too... <lmao> EDIT - the KAC SR-25 is gonna cost you about $5k. I built this for $1.9k: -

Ditto - I've got similar measurements to ss on alot of barrels. My biggest reason for not getting a DPMS SASS barrel previously was the "tapered gas block" junk I'd seen. Drew, is that a continuous .936 for the length of the gas block mounting area? Does it neck down somewhere in the area a block would mount? <dontknow> -
BIG sale on the Millett DMS-1 at Midway right now - $199!!! http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=186660&&rfx_page=0&RFX_PassBack=utm_source=Oct_10_Flyer&utm_medium=URL&rfx_catalogname=Oct_10_Flyer&rfx_catalog=1&utm_source=Oct_10_Flyer&utm_medium=URL&rfx_spread=0&rfx_gid=65604&rfx_pageid=1&rfx_catalog=1&rfx_passback=utm_source%3dOct_10_Flyer%26utm_medium%3dURL&rfx_base=http%3a%2f%2fmidwayusa.richfx.com.edgesuite.net%2fcatalog_midwayusa%2fOct_10_Flyer%2f&rfx_catalog_base=http%3a%2f%2fwww.midwayusa.com%2fGeneral.mvc%2fIndex%2fFlyerOnline%3f&rfx_omni=1&rfx_OmniPageName=p1&rfx_OmniCatalogName=Oct_10_Flyer&rfx_OmniClientID=midwayusa

300 Blackout; .30 Cal from the M4 Platform
98Z5V replied to 98Z5V's topic in Firearm Industry News and Gossip
Not if it's intended to be a carbine for the total US Armed Forces. There would have to be some pretty serious evidence that (this round for example) is far superior to service ammunition right now - for NATO to adopt it. Without NATO adoption, it would never make it as a replacement firearm for the entire US Armed Forces. Now, on the other hand, SOF can just about buy anything it wants... <thumbsup>
