You were literally laughing out loud when you read that, weren't ya?... <laughs>

Gotta get your attention somehow... <lmao> Seeing lots of new registrations, but not many posts. Hmmm... I say to myself, "Self..." - well, because that's what I call myself... :o "Self, what's going on here?..." And this is what I'm thinking: The new guys are just looking around first, me thinks. They'll start posting. Big possibility of it all is that people are thinking about getting into the .308, and are just lurking for info. They don't have any parts or guns yet, and might feel uncomfortable about posting anything just yet. Maybe a post titled "All those that are thinking of getting a .308..." and get into the thread with something like "don't be shy about posting questions here, if you're thinking about getting into this shooting platform - post up. We don't know everything, but between all of us, we can probably guide you in some kind of a decent direction... " Then, I realize that junk won't work. Not at all. At this point, I don't know what to do, so if new guys want to post up and ask questions, then just let it fly. Nobody here has a bajillion years on the .308 semi platforms because they haven't been around that long for the civilian (non .mil) community, but there is some experience here on them. Any question at all is a good one - promotes conversation, enlivens the board, makes you better looking to the opposite sex, grows back some hair in those "thinning spots..." ;D It's all good - fire away, speak up, just have fun. Just don't be shy about joining the conversation, no matter what it is. Well, .308 semi related, or other board-topic related, anyway... So, how'd I do, Drew? You know, since you made me post this... <laughs> <munch>

BWAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!! <lmao> Well, I'm doing the math in my mellon here... and I come up with this - $1,998.00 for that upper, in .338LM. $4,495 for the Only Long Range "Bad News" .338LM Semi: http://www.onlylongrange.com/badnews.asp $4,850 for the FD338, which right now is nothing more than computer-generated images - vaporware: http://www.fd-defense.com/FD338 So, seeing that I checked out a 20rd box of .338LM Match ammo at Cabela's last time I was there - at $129 a box of 20 ($6.45 per round)... I could use the minimum of savings by getting the bolt upper over the Bad News ($2,497), and buy 387 Match rounds from Cabela's... :o <laughs>

Up in the air on it. Considering it chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum with a 24" barrel... :o <dontknow> Opinions, comments, experience in a bolt gun conversion like this? Let it fly... <thumbsup> Tactilite T1 Super Match from Zel Custom Manufacturing:

Very nice... <thumbsup> That is built in scope offset, for long(er) range shooting. To shoot in closer, you'll have to zero closer (and have a scope capable of the adjustment range), and you'd lose some of that uber-longrange capability that's built into the upper (without re-zeroing).

Mine doesn't look like that, but my pics suck. I'll get better ones tomorrow if you need them. I also didn't notice how much lint and dust is on this thing until I looked at the pics... :o <laughs>

Another gun owner held prisoner by the Kalifornia borders, huh? <laughs> Welcome. <thumbsup>
-
Welcome aboard, man - good move, too. <thumbsup> There's tons of info here, so rip into it at your leasure. Ask away on anything you want - chances are, somebody here either has the part, or has done the action of what you're looking for.

Finally making some progress. I've been gathering some small parts, but bigger parts are starting to trickle in. Still have about another 2 or 3 weeks before the stripped upper and lower will be here. :'( That's a temporary BCM complete BCG there. This build has just about killed me. I'll probably break it in with that, but it'll have a Fail Zero Nickel Boron coated BCG by the end of July for sure. Then it'll be "finished."

LR308 Stainless Barrel Painting or Coating?
98Z5V replied to Scratcha's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
DEI High Temp Exhaust coating - sprays right on. <thumbsup> The High Temperature (HT) Silicone Coating provides lasting protection for any hot surface up to 1500 degrees. DEI recommend the use of this coating with their exhaust wrap because it seals the material and provides lasting protection from oil, dirt and road grime. Don't limit the use to exhaust header wrap, this products works well on headers, blocks, starters and even on your grill at home. * Heat protection up to 1500°F * Penetrates, seals, protects and prolongs the lifespan of exhaust wrap * Many uses around the home and shop * 12 oz. cans All kinds of places carry it, but you can order it online, too. About $10 a can. -
Damn Ed, that thing is nice! I love the DBM setups (that a Seekins, too?). How much is built into that Seekins base - about 20 MOA? Very nice boomstick ya got there. <thumbsup>

Magpul will take those Pmags right back from you and send you new ones right away. You're damn good at explaining things technically, so they won't have a single issue with the swap. Definitely worth doing, and it wouldn't be worth hanging onto those particular ones if they'll only work in one of your .308s. Git 'em! ;D

I think the problem is with AR-15 specific aftermarket triggers used in a .308 semi - lighter hammers and lighter hammer springs for an AR-15 won't always ignite a 7.62 military hard primer. The strike with a lighter hammer and lighter hammer spring might not be enough to set off a hard .mil 7.62 primer in some surplus ammo (from other countries). The parts will all fit from one to another, typically - AR-15 to AR-10/.308 AR. FCG pockets are all milled the same. It just depends on what kind of ammo you typically shoot, or will shoot, through the rifle. The lighter trigger for an AR-15 wouldn't necessarily cause a .308 AR to double fire or fire repeatedly - those lighter triggers could cause the .308 AR to NOT fire, with .mil 7.62 surplus hard-primered stuff. They can't "dent it" enough. <thumbsup>

Instigator... >:( <laughs>

I had to post this correction - just wrong if I tell you tell you to get an AR-10 buffer and spring. AR-10 CARBINE buffer and CARBINE buffer spring, specifically. The UBR takes a carbine buffer and carbine buffer spring, due to it's size, and it's design. My bad, man... :o

Eh, no worries, man - you're still only about an hour and a half from me. We can work something up, for sure. Come September, I've got free ranges (no fees, completely free) all the way to 31 March. That's worth a drive. <thumbsup> I don't know what you've got in that area, but there's plenty in NoVA in the fall, and through the winter. We can shoot 1k at Quantico, too. ;D

Big fan of the Birchwood Caset Shoot-N-C targets. Black backgrounds, holes show up yellow. Easy to see at range through a scope, no matter what kind of day it is (overcast, bright sun, whatever). Love 'em. ;D I like these, too - great on days that you shouldn't have gone to the range in the first place - RAIN. They're all plastic, also by BC, and they're called "Dirty Bird" targets. Black background, holes show up white. I've got a file of targets from NAHC saved on my computer - I'll pull those up and print them, depending on what I'm doing. The file has some great scope sight-in targets in the package. You guys can download the targets and use them whenever. Make sure you measure them out once you print them - they all have 1" markers somewhere on the target, and you should print them at the right size. Depending on computer and printer files, it might take some custom resizing to get them right when they come out of the printer... Snatch 'em here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/8453904/Shooting-Targets-Printable

Very nice stick(s)!!! Welcome, also! There's a specific Iron Ridge section a little further down the main board menu, if you want to post them in there. Not much in that section because there aren't many of these out there yet (or the owners haven't found this place yet). ;D Where in Maryland are you - southern, by chance? I'm in NoVA. If you're close, we can gather and shoot sometime. <thumbsup>

Found it - took some digging. :o Original Poster of this info (made the diagram) is chris65 from another message board - just giving proper credit, 'cause it's a good chart. <thumbsup> This is .223 Rem, 5.56mm NATO, and .223 Wylde compared. Chamber dimensions are based off the chamber reaming tools.

The UBR comes with it's own receiver extension (buffer tube). To run it on the AR-10, you'll need an AR-10 (or comparable .308-specific) buffer spring and buffer CARBINE buffer and CARBINE buffer spring. With those parts, it'll mount right up to your AR-10. I've seen some guys say that it won't function properly unless you've got a "Slash stubby buffer," (you can Google that and it'll turn up for you). I can't verify that info one way or the other, though. Can you get it directly from Magpul? Sure. You'll pay full MSRP that way, and there are other online vendors that have it cheaper. I'd shop around a little and find the best deal you can. Hit this for the Slash buffer: http://www.heavybuffers.com/ar10carbine.html

Here's a couple really good posts about it: http://www.gunslot.com/forum/308-and-7-62x51-same-round http://www.303british.com/id36.html Also, there's a user here named "popgunner" (or close to that) - I've seen him post some of the best info about the differences, on another message board. Hopefully, he'll see this and join the conversation. <thumbsup>

The .308 vs. 7.62 is the opposite of the .223 vs. 5.56 stuff - .308 is rated up to a higher pressure than the 7.62 counterpart round... I think the last numbers I found were something like 48k psi in the 7.62 cartridges vs. a 62k psi max in the .308 Win cartridge. The people that need to be cautious of this are the guys that shoot older military surplus rifles. A high pressure .308 Win round can have some bad effects in an old milsurp rifle. The modern semiauto rifles don't suffer so much from it - .308 or 7.62 chamber in the modern guns with modern manufacturing - typically not a problem. Anytime this is brought up on the 'net messageboards, it turns into a big fat debate. I'll find some links I've got on the info and post it into this response.

New DPMS Panther LR308 purchase.
