By Keith Finch - October 9, 2020 First seen on The Firearm Blog, Sig Sauer (Specifically SIG Sauer Electro-Optics) have been awarded a $77,168,400 contract to provide the US Army’s new Direct View Optic (DVO) which will be used on the M4A1 carbine and likely any remaining M16A4’s retained as DMR’s. Army is looking to replace the venerable fixed power TA31 ACOGs (designated M150 RCO) that serve beside the Aimpoint CompM series CCO’s. The new DVOs will meld the capabilities of the RCO and CCO and add increased engagement envelope to the M4A1’s The Marines selected the Trijicon VCOG 1-8x to top their H&K M27 rifles not long ago and this award to Sig Sauer by the Army signals a final shift in the large scale ground combat elements going to LPVO’s. Along with the standard dimensional and operational environment capability requirements for heat, vibration, environment, durability, etc. The Army required the DVO to have a passive reticle with an ‘Army specified reticle pattern’ with free-floating windage and range adjustment marks/numbers (likely the M855A1) as well as an illuminated center aiming feature visible under all lighting conditions including total darkness. The DVO had to be M1913 Picatinny rail compatible, mount an objective lens Laser Filter Unit that attaches to the objective lens end of the optic (one of the annoying honeycomb things, I believe), and have an optical sight box center line of 38.1 ±2.5mm [1.5 ±0.1 inches] from the top of the rail (inline with the current ACOG and Aimpoint heights). The optic had to be no longer than 10.5 inches and use AA, CR123 or CR2032 batteries if necessary. The SIG Tango6T SOT61233 Hellfire M855A1 on an M4(gery) Army may not have picked the SOT61233 specifically but it is the most likely candidate, it is the SOCOM S-VPO. Sig also may have submitted an unlisted variant instead of one of their commercial facing items. I have been impressed and continue to be impressed by Sig’s high end optical line in both dots and variables. There will be another optical award to go along with the NGSW-R/AR selection in the next couple years but it is good to see that the rifles that will be sticking around while while the new weapons make their way in will continue modernization as well. Now if only they’d put a decent sling on them and some QD points.

We were taking the word of you, and what you experienced as an issue, and basing it from what we've see in the past, and we stated it, pretty directly. And, we based it from what we've seen, in the past, from your barrel manufacturer. Yes, we have experience in that. Research here, on your part, would have dug up all that information, especially on the barrel maker. Hope that is all starting to sink in now. We've been doing this for a very long time, specifically on this platform. I'll be curious as to what your gas port diameter really is.

You found the right one/right topic. Drill bits are quite sufficient, no need for a reamer. Irwin numbered drill bits that you can find in any Ace Hardware store, across this great country, have fixed more undersized gas ports than you can imagine. Don't overthink it. It's not hard to do. All you're doing is changing (up-sizing) the diameter of a hole, that is already there.

You don't need a gunsmith to do it. You can do it at home, with a hand drill, and it's easy. You were guided that direction last Friday, right here in this post from @DNP: So, after being given that advice - did you search out that (then) recent thread, and see what advice was given?

Those are good numbers, and not your problem. What spring? Let's start looking at other things, besides the recoil system (and the info on the spring). If it's all - ALL - Armalite, then it's the EA1095 spring - and we don't need to worry about it. Something else is going on, and it's not the recoil system. For the record, though - that's not the dimensions for the Armalite RIFLE buffer/receiver extension kit - that's the Armalite AR-10 CARBINE receiver extension kit...

Sierra - which is really CCI/Speer - is probably smart enough to leave that alone, and let Barnes just be Barnes, and keep doing what they do - keep making your awesome projectiles, and keep publishing your own Barnes Load Manuals. I'm betting it goes that way... Barnes didn't change a thing when Remington was controlling them - and I'll bet Sierra is smart enough to keep it just that way.

No, there isn't a metal sleeve in your gas port. Again, no - there isn't a sleeve. Max ID in a gas tube is 0.125". All - and I do mean ALL - gas BLOCKS have a 0.125" port drilled in them. What you're seeing is exactly what @DNP told you that you were seeing - you're seeing a carbon-fouling ring around your gas port - from the size of the hole in the gas BLOCK - and the diameter of that carbon ring would measure... DING! DING! DING!... 0.125" diameter. You can listen to what you're being told, or you can argue what you think you see/know, but I'm telling you right now that you are incorrect in thinking that there's some kind of sleeve in there, and you're looking at a 0.125" carbon ring. FWIW. Good news, though - at least your gas block was centered over the gas port in your barrel, like it was supposed to be. 0.090"~0.095" gas port for an 18" rifle gas .308 Win barrel with a 0.750" gas block journal. You can take that or leave it, as far as information goes, but this isn't my first rodeo with these things. Obviously, you're pretty sure that you have a 0.089" gas port, but you're measuring with fractional bits. You need to be measuring with numbered drill bits. They're more accurate. At any rate - if 0.089" is so close to 0.090", and that's not doing it for you - then you need to be on the larger end of what I recommended to you. Not the smaller end. Again - you DO NOT HAVE A SLEEVE IN THAT GAS PORT.

There's a bunch going on in that video that needs to change. 1. Get your left hand off the front of that magazine, and stop pulling back on it. That does nothing but tilt your mag forward, and point bullets downward, to the extent that it can move in the magwell. The handguard is there, for your left hand - not the magazine. 2. Shoot with the tip - TIP -of your trigger finger. You have that big bugger-hook so deep in the trigger, - you're shooting that thing with the second digit. Don't do that. "Sink more finger on that trigger" works with pistols in some circumstances, but it doesn't work with something that you're building and using as a precision-type rifle. 3. You're jerking the trigger. As soon as that round goes off, you're trigger finger is FLYING out of that trigger guard. Yes, even in slo-mo. You fire, and hold the trigger to the rear, throughout the recoil cycle of the weapon, until the weapon settles itself AFTER recoil. Then, you release the trigger, and you'll hear the "metallic click" of the disconnector releasing the hammer. If you DON'T follow that process, you'll never, ever be able to check your Natural Point Of Aim correctly. 4. Your scope is too far forward, and your head is too far back on that stock. Most modern scopes have an eye relieve that's around 3". That scope is mounted easily 2" further forward than it should be, and in your first shot, I can't even see your head in the video. Where's your head? Gotta be more than 6" from that scope eyepiece. If I'm looking at the markings on the right side of that scope correctly, that's a Trijicon scope. Just observances from watching your video. Sign up for, and attend an AppleSeed Shoot. They're everywhere in the country, every state, and you'll learn a TON about marksmanship fundamentals. Even if it doesn't have anything to do with the malfunction you're having, you need to change alot of things that you're doing with the way you're firing. There's alot that needs fixed there. If it never gets fixed, and you don't change it, then every rifle that you try to fire accurately, is only going to disappoint you. And it won't be the fault of the rifle. Look into what @edgecrusher stated about the square-faced ejectors... They don't like to feed rounds that are coming from the right side of the magazine, in that double-stack mag.

You're running a 5.200" long buffer in an extension that needs to run a 3.250" long buffer. Any old AR15 Carbine H3 buffer is what you need, or the gen-u-wine Armalite AR-10 Carbine buffer - which is an AR15 Carbine H3 buffer. Double check the internal depth of your receiver extension. It should measure out at 7 5/8" internal depth. If it measures 6 15/16" internal, or 7.000" internal - then it might be Armalite, but it's the M-15 (AR15) version, and not the AR-10 Carbine version.

Rifle recoil system, so your buffer OAL is close enough to 5.200" long, so that's okay. 9 1/16" for an internal depth inside the receiver extension is WAY too short - Rifle Receiver Extensions are 9 11/16" internal depth. Double check that number/depth. Get rid of the spring, and run an Armalite EA1095 spring in there. Quality spring that you don't have to guess about, and it's proven. I think your gas port is too small in that barrel. They might say it's 0.095", but I wouldn't trust what they say. You'll need 0.090"~0.095" to run a rifle gas 18" barrel, if your gas block journal size is 0.750". You're running the A2 stock setup, if you're referencing the 5/8" long spacer for the end of the extension, before you put the stock on there. Make sure the buttstock screw isn't too long, and protruding inside the receiver extension, when installed. That'll stop you right in your tracks, if it's sticking into that extension, on the inside.

I've engaged targets at 2000 yards with the Mk 19. Mk 19, belt fed 40mm grenade machine gun- I have some funny stories about this gun, like using linked belts of HEDP to put out a range fire... I was the King Of Rock, that day... Looks like that Nokia phone from Transformers that @Armed Eye Doc loves so much, but this is ONE BIG BITCH, right here. Perspective: This is the "40mm Grenade" version of the MaDuce, .50 Cal machine gun. This thing RULES...
