According to this:

https://thecmp.org/cmp_sales/sales-faq/

it looks like you just  have to belong to an affiliated club or organization as found here:

https://ct.thecmp.org/app/v1/index.php?do=clubSearch

or certain veterans' organizations:

"starting in 2005 Congressionally chartered veterans’ organizations (VFW, American Legion, etc.) are recognized as CMP special affiliates"

They will probably have them in their 2 stores, mail order, and also auction them online:

I was surprised to read the news report about this, and I intend to obtain at least one.

I imagine it may take some time after they are released and what ever time it takes the CMP to go through them for sale ... maybe a year?

Good news, and a once in a life time opportunity.

Of course the current administration has to hang a dark cloud over the idea:

One other thing I wasn't keeping in mind, Here in Kommiefornia we have this little deal called the "safe handgun roster"

if it isn't on the list, you can't buy it unless it is a private party transfer or you are L/E - I'll have to run this by my FFL buddy

That article is from May.  The bill was signed into law 2 days ago.

Any idea when these may be available?

No.  We were discussing it this past weekend.  One person volunteered that when the Garands became available, it took them almost 3 years to get theirs.

I'll probably get one for nostalgia sake. Don't curse me, I'm just not a 45 aficionado. Never even owned one yet. I prefer my 9mm & 40 S&W pistols.

Hey, I like my .40 S&W M&P too.  And I have, and enjoy the hell out of my "modern" 1911.  But I'll get one of these.  I had a military surplus 1911 a long time ago, and due to a brain fart traded for something else.  Always wanted it back.  Got a couple of garands through the CMP, and I'll go for one of these, also.  That comes from being a nostalgic old fart.

Besides, Obama doesn't want me to have one....can't think of a better reason to own one.

Guys over at the 1911forum.com were discussing this a few days ago and general consensus there is that it will probably take at least two years for them to become available, and that is IF and WHEN the armed forces decide to release the pistols for sale.

The forum at CMP says pretty much the same thing.
