.308 gas sytems

Ok guys and gals don't hammer me to much but I have a question. I'm a bow hunter at heart and don't  know a whole lot about guns especially AR type systems. However I have a crazy idea to build a .308. I'm excited about it and looking forward to finishing it. My question is "gas sytems" and what to do. Full length or mid gas system. The project is a .308 18in Christensen Arms CA-10 Carbon Barrel or the Lilja 18. I haven't really decided on which one and open to suggestions on barrels to. The gun will be used for a variety of hunting game from deer, hogs, and whatever else steps in front of it.

Well kind of I'm using Areo Precision upper and lower. The rest of it is still up in the air. I do have a list of parts I just gotta continue my research and figure out going to work the best. Like I said I'm new to AR platform and the AR world is a bit overwhelming. However I will post some pics on here when it's done. If I can get what's in my head to an actual gun I think the AR Community would be proud of this rookie.

I personally prefer a Rifle length gas system when the 308 cartridge is involved . Helps with recoil slightly & less stress on cycling components . I have rifle length gas systems on three 308AR's , 16",18" & 20 " barreled rifles .

You choices in Barrels are top notch , there are less expensive alternatives , that have the reputation to shoot better then most of us can , IMO , but buy what you like , you can't go wrong with your choices .

18" is a good choice , but for hunting , I would use my 16" , that 2" doesn't sound like much , but the shorter barrel swings around faster & is slightly lighter . I see only a slight difference in grouping between the length of the barrels @ 200 yards .All three of my Barrels are Criterion Barrels .

Thanks for the welcome from everyone. I chose this platform because I don't own a ton of guns and honestly don't really want to. I figured the .308 in an AR would be the end all be all gun, for me that is. I wanted something that would do everything I want it to in one package. I realize my choice in parts are on the more expensive side but I just need one weapon like this, at this time. Ill probably build a 15 for my son when gets a little older and won't use the high end parts, but daddy gets the good stuff :).  Now as far as my choice in barrels and the18in. I want the gun to be consistent at 600 yards and have a short enough swing for hogs on the run. Realistically 98% of the time 0 to 400 yards is the most I'll shoot. So I figured if I build something that would cover 600 yards I would be good. If that can achieved with a 16in barrel I would gladly use that and I would much rather carry a shorter, lighter weapon. I'll take the advice on rifle length gas system and go with that. Thank you for the help and I'm sure I'll have more questions as build comes together.

Thank you again for help and the welcome into your world.

My first AR was a 308 as well but I got bit good with the bug after that as well.

My first full build was a 308AR with a 16 inch rifle gas system. I had some issues with the barrel maker undersizing the gas port but with some expert guidance from the good folks here I got it sorted out to be a very reliable weapon.  You should be fine with a 16 inch barrel versus the 18 for what you want.

If you do go the 16" Rifle length route, Criterion's got a great one they developed "just for us" here:

 http://criterionbarrels.com/ar-10-hybrid

It's the first selection under stainless steel barrels.  When you order, ask for Josh, btw.

Not trying to push you one way or the other, but you'll probably save at least $200 going with Criterion over Lilja, and seems like around $400 compared to one of those sexy, cf-wrapped CA barrels.  Granted, you won't be disappointed with any of these choices, but you'll save $ u could use for glass with Criterion.

Jfrid      all of my 16"s and my one 18" use middy gas length....we shoot steel up to 500 yds with the 16"s not a problemo...after the rifle is broken in you can always tune on it to get softer recoil...or get yourself a padded bra            shooting banana emoticon       Wash

Thanks I'll continue my research on the 16in. I'm not so much worried about recoil as I am being accurate. I also figured that the rifle length gas would allow for better accuracy and save the moving parts in the gun. I've watched a ton videos of guys shooting at longer range and being completely happy 6 inch groups. That's not really acceptable for me, and maybe I'm being unreasonable. But I don't think so. That's one of the reasons I chose the more higher end BCG and barrel. But I'll definitely look into Criterion barrel.

It's been a variety of distances. Just watched someone at 300 yards with a 7 in group, some other person at 1000 with I believe a 22 or a 24 inch barrel with insanely large group. Now yes yes yes I know 1000 yards has its own demons and that's entirely out of what I'm trying to do. And they could have pushing the limits of the systems they built.  On the other hand I've seen some pretty amazing groups 200 and beyond. I know the gun is fully capable at being accurate . I wasn't trash talking anyone by any means. I was just stating I want more that's all. This is my first build so talking bad about others is not my place. I'll try to post a video of what talking about. This forum is also a first for me. I never been on a forum so posting videos I'll have to figure out. Yall have been very helpful and made me feel welcome. And the advice is much appreciated. Oh btw yes I said "yall" I'm from South Carolina and in our dictionary for sure.

your fine! If your happy with 6" groups at 200 yards you don't need to buy all those high dollar parts lol

Jfridley,  I have been keeping up with this discussion about building a .308 AR, LR rifle and have noticed you are concerned with : " I'm not so much worried about recoil as I am being accurate." However there is one very important part of the rifle concerning accuracy, that is a good quality TRIGGER.

JRF.  what Mrmac stated is very true...a good trigger will make you a better shooter... all of my 308 barrels are not considered high dollar thrown down pieces....but they all shoot sub moa out to three hundred yds....then moa out to 500 because I suk ...if you arnt familar with that term it means moment of angle...so when one sez their rifle shoots moa....  that means 1 lnch groups at 100....2inch groups at 200...3inch groups at 300...4inch at 400. Ect ect

So one can have a sub moa barrel at 100...then further out not sub moa but just moa....kinda boils down to the shooter...

Ah yes the trigger I had the Geissele Super Dynamic Enhanced Flat Blade Trigger in mind. I'm not completely sure about the flat blade portion of it because I've never shot and it just looks weird. But it seems very smooth and crisp from what I'm reading . Any thoughts on that one?

There are several companies putting out high quality triggers for good prices, some who are even members here, but once you drink the Geissele koolaid, well....

I have an SSA-E in my Matrix build (the curved trigger SD-E), and I've loved it since day 1.  I almost went with the SD-E, too, but for me it came down to familiarity.  Not that the SD-E isn't a great trigger, but I don't want to have to think about finger position, seeing how, at this point, position on a curved trigger is basically reflex.  But that's just me, you could be more comfortable with a flat trigger.  Never REALLY know til she's in your hands.

Btw, out here in SEGa, y'all is singular, among other things :)
