JRF.  what Mrmac stated is very true...a good trigger will make you a better shooter... all of my 308 barrels are not considered high dollar thrown down pieces....but they all shoot sub moa out to three hundred yds....then moa out to 500 because I suk ...if you arnt familar with that term it means moment of angle...so when one sez their rifle shoots moa....  that means 1 lnch groups at 100....2inch groups at 200...3inch groups at 300...4inch at 400. Ect ect

So one can have a sub moa barrel at 100...then further out not sub moa but just moa....kinda boils down to the shooter...

Wash

Very close Wash, the simple math:  (distance to target in yards) Times .01046 equals one minute of angle.  Therefore if your rifle groups one inch at 100 yards you can say "it shoots sub MOA"

So how important are muzzle brakes? Is it really nessasary?  Do they really add anything to the gun? I guess I feel that if you run an adjustable gas block and heavy buffer kit how bad can the recoil be after that? Are these really just for looks? I'm torn about this one. I've shot the 30.06, .270, 3030 and never had a break. How much wrose can a .308 be?  I've never used a break before so i maybe missing out. I don't really wanna deal with noise of one either. I understand the point of getting back on target quickly. But im not shooting Arabs running across a street either. I'm using it for deer and pigs mainly. Help me understand why I need one. I don't really recall seeing pictures of these guns (ar/lr.308) without one. Is it standard that you just gotta get a brake?

A heavier buffer and correctly adjusted gas block may reduce recoil, but nowhere near as much as a good muzzle brake will.  I've got a large profile brake from JP (not that ugly ass recoil eliminator), and recoil is almost nonexistent.

Faster follow up shot if need be too, reduce muzzle rise, also seems like many "hunting style" ars leave them off

I never understood that, seems like more people would want the advantage of a good brake on a hunting rifle, and I don't get how it could be illegal to hunt with one in an age where over 40 states (right?) legalized hunting with suppressors.  So I ask why is a muzzle brake on a factory hunting rifle a bad idea?

So I ask why is a muzzle brake on a factory hunting rifle a bad idea?

The only thing that comes to mind is that when you hunt without hearing protection the increased muzzle noise is going to scramble your brains. Otherwise, a muzzle brake seems pretty useful, especially if you want to be able to track a long distance shot.

adrenaline cancels out that scrambling at least with me it does.

What's up guys. Yeah yeah I know it's been a while. I've been slowly working on this project since we last discussed some things. I'll post a pic of where I am so far in a lil bit, and a parts list if interested. However it's barrel time, I'm struggling with what to get. Earlier in the topic I mentioned I was thinking about Lilja 1/11 twist or the Christian Arms Carbon barrel 1/10 twist both 18 in. I'm questioning if these are the best? They are expensive but I don't mind that. As I wanted this to be the best it could be. Accuracy and being dependable is the main goal. Is there anything else better? Now I say I don't mind the cost, but these are probably at the top of my budget for a barrel. Any ideas or experience with these or others?

I'd contact Proof Research over Christiansen... I have a Proof/ABS barrel (their earlier model) and I love it.

Krieger or Criterion both make great barrels too.

Faxon barrels are much lighter and are getting good results.

LaRue and LMT make an extremely accurate barrel, but they're hefty... and $$$

Definitely wear ears while hunting and at the range. I shot without ears for about 20 years then one day my ears started ringing and never stopped. That was 20 years ago. I have tinnitus. 40% loss in my left ear and 20% loss in my right ear. If you think ringing constantly is not that bad think again. I was miserable for a few years until I got used to it. Now I have a heard time hearing, forget about holding a conversation with a lot of background noise, and I hear crickets 24/7.

You may not notice a shot while hunting, but the nerves in your ears are being damaged with each shot. There is only one thing in my life that I would like a do over on and it would be shooting with ears every time I have ever pulled a trigger in my life.

Hopefully the ones who wanted to see the finished product will get this. It's been a while in the making but here she is, the finished product of what was rattling around in my head. Thank you all again for the help and support.

I'm pretty sure my wife would have fit if I started another build right now. Potentially I'll start one with my son after the first of year. But he's getting a cheaper version haha. Daddy gets the good stuff. I just finished it yesterday so I haven't shot it yet and it's killing me. Hopefully this weekend or the first of next week for sure.

Hopefully you'll be able to build one then
