Boog
6.3 is a great number! Why? Because it is below 7. And why is that important? Because if one's blood sugar (A1C) is 7 or above, one is diabetic. My A1C is now 6.3. Back in Jan of 2015, I got sick, bad sick and they discovered by the end of the month that I was diabetic with an A1C of 13.6. By November 2015, I had it down to 7.6 with a diet change and this January, it was down to 7.3. Now that I have the swim for veterans as my quest and have been diligently working hard, I am now below the diabetic level. I am still on meds for now but if this keeps going the way it is, I will win this battle as well. Hoo-yah life!

planeflyer21
Great job Boog! Ssooo...what sort of "diet changes"? I'd imagine a few of us around here are in for that in the future. May as well get a headstart.
Armed Eye Doc
Slightly tongue-in-cheek, I tell patients not to eat anything white or that tastes good. Mostly it's the carbs that will get you in trouble. If you cut back on those and start exercising more, it goes a long way to keep your body healthy. Boog
The number one good food for diabetics is an apple. Red delicious and granny Smith are the highest in anti-oxidants but any will do due to their fiber and the type of sugar they give us; I eat 1-2 a day. I also eat at least one cup full of berries, Black, Blue or Straw... The gastro doc said I need at least two helpings of fish a week; not to waste my money on fish oil pills, just eat the darn fish. I eat lots of veggies usually with either guacamole or humus. I eat lots of nuts and a table spoon of peanut butter 4-6 times a day. Basically, I eat 6 small meals a day. Lean beef and pork are a big part of this diet but I try to keep the portions down to 6-8 ounces each. I eat more chicken then any other meat. I have cut most bread out of my diet as well as rice. But to be honest, when one lives with a Filipino, that is harder than trying to breath water. I cut way back on my soda pop but will still have a Dr. Pepper once in a great while. I drink a beer or two but stay away from the girl beers. I mainly drink stouts, porters and ales that live in 7% alcohol range and above. (Okay, that doesn't help the situation at all but in an effort to fully disclose, I had to divulge it). A nice rum or a Scotch will sneak its way into my belly once in awhile too. Cutting out the bread, rice and soda and going to 6 meals a day helped more than I thought it would. The numbers don't lie; I have lost close to 25 pounds this way. Robocop1051
Wtg Boog! I was 275# and deathly afraid of diabetes. Some of the guys here can attest to that. I changed my lifestyle to a Paleo (hunter-gatherer) diet, and lost 90 lbs in a 10 months. I've been 185-195 for almost 3 full years now. Bread and pasta are evil. Sugar is poison. Veggies are our friends. Take it easy on the steak. Feast on fish. Eggs are good for you. Bourbon, scotch and whiskey are legitimate "cheat foods". Quality Omega-3 capsules are not a waste of money.
Boog
I love to hear success stories, there are too many of the other kind out there. 6 hours ago, Robocop1051 said: Wtg Boog! I ate between 11,000 and 13,000 calories a day back then but all we did in those days was swim, run and calisthenics... Oh to be in that shape again. At this point I hope I can at least get down to 200 pounds by the end of the year. My gastro told me I needed to eat 6 ounces of beef 4-5 times a week. He said stick to sirloin and filet. 6 hours ago, Quentin said: ... and cutting out flour, potatoes, refined carbs of any kind to get the blood serum glucose and A1C down. But like I wrote above, apples are the number one good food for diabetes as are berries and stone fruits. Veggies have never hurt my feelings and I eat plenty of them. Thanks guys

Ironically, the el cheapo store brands are more likely to be free of these additives, though it isn't a guarantee. Other hidden ingredients are potato and corn startches as "non-sticking agents" in stuff like pre-shredded cheese. Cellulose is big in shredded cheese to aka saw dust boog your post about eating 6 small meals a day you sound like my gym rat friends but being your getting ready for your swim that's a good thing! I need to get my self back working out and what not I got fat over the winter. I kicked soda along time ago and try staying away from high fructose corn syrup as much as possible cuz like flyer said that schit is in everything. I kicked soda because the leaded stuff is full of poop and the unleaded stuff is full of poop. I did find a soda in the organic isle that's really good (and I'm normally picky on that stuff) called zevia. It's basically naturally flavored soda water no colors no artifial sweeteners. I'll have a few of those a week but mainly it's tea and water, (and craft beer lol). when I got my new phone it came with a pedometer on it, I walk 4/6 miles a day for work, but I need to start biking again and eating right again I'm up to 245, two years ago I was 228 and didn't have quite the over hang. Good luck boog
Sisco
Glad to hear these success stories. Had to quit working out last year when my damaged back got worse, and I ballooned. Now time to get back to where I want to be now that my back surgery is behind me. Thanks for sharing guys, gives me some motivation. Have to dump some carbs and sugar, other than that my diet should be ok.
Boog
@Sisco, those darn back injuries take many of us down. As a younger sailor, I was recovering from one such issue and to help with rehab, I would swim around the carrier while in port as part of the security detail to look for magnetic mines or other nefarious things. Most of the EOD guys found it to be a tedious job, but for me it was pure love. Nowadays, swimming is the number one activity I can do to fight this darn diabetes and keep the rest of me from hating what ever I do. If able, find a pool and give it shot; most of us can't find an aircraft carrier in need of spot checks after all...
