308 Build ... Recommendations please

Nailcreek

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm starting up a 308 build, and welcome thoughts around components.  So far I've settled on the following:

  • 18" Criterion Barrel
  • Midwest Industries Upper and Lower

Apart from that, I'm open.  I don't want to sink a fortune into it, but also want to ensure that I'm satisfied.  So, to me that means better than average, but not Cadillac.

While the most use will come on a target range (not much more than a few hundred yards), I would likely take it out deer and coyote hunting.  I'd also like to have it set up "in the spirit" of an M110 or L129.

Thoughts on buttstocks, triggers, rails and sights?

Thanks,

"Nailcreek"

The  M110 or L12A1 are not really set up to be Coyote rifles.  Are you looking to make this a lighter weight build?  Do you prefer singe or two stage trigger pulls?  Are you going to be mounting things / forward grips / etc on the handguard?  Do you want a compact telescopic stock or fixed?  How much magnification do you need?  1st vs. 2nd focal plane? etc.

I've settled on the SOPMOD type adjustable buttstock.  Not sure about triggers, as I'm not familiar with what's on the market or the pluses and minuses.  I'd like a free floating forend, with a quad rail system (L129A1-ish), but it seems that's a bit problematic.  Apart from a set of BUIS sights and perhaps a bipod, I'm not going to be hanging the kitchen sink off of the forend.

I've been trying to find the L129A1 flashider, but without any luck.  The L129 uses a quad fork, and most on the market are three.
