.260 Remington AR

I would like a precision match gun chambered in .260 remington with a collapsible stock, 15 in free floating for end, and a stainless steel bull barrel 16-20 inches in length depending on the weight of the rest of the firearm to try and create a good balancing point. I do not have the time to build my own rifle and below is what some of the local builders have told me.

"The AR series in 260rem is problematic and takes a lot time to get working correctly. We can build and get it to work right but not without careful selecting the perfect parts. This makes the research and labor costs higher.

1. The bolt is a simple 308 bolt but the 260 has very different characteristics.
      A. It can puddle primers
      B. It stretches brass casings which makes it harder to extract.
      C. The bolt has to have a to have totally flat face with no recess as the shell may bounce  when fired.

2. The barrel needs to be at least 20 inches or more long in order to make the gas system work right.
      A. this caliber was designed in a bolt action not a semi auto.
      B. The shorter the barrel, the sooner the gas gets out. This unaffected with a bolt gun
      C. The semi auto is gas operated and requires 20k+ psi. If the gas gets out too soon or too fast, it will have cycling issues.
      D. 22 inches would be a better start.

3. The barrel needs to be custom made with a matching pre head spaced bolt.
4. The buffer tube should be full length and not carbine to give it the maximum spring return. Therefore, no collapsible stock."

Has anyone else experienced or heard of these problems with the .260 Remington cartridge in an AR?

What a bunch of bull!!!!  I installed a DPMS over the counter bbl on an otherwise "standard" RRA gun and have fired severall hundreds of rounds through it!

I did have to modify( file the lips) slightly on several fn mags to insure good feeding, but thats all.

It shoots under an inch, all day long!

Everything you listed is a bunch of crap!

  Respectfully

Terry

Thanks for the response guys. I wasn't sure if it was bs, but kinda sounded like it such as the flat bolt considering .260 rem is just .308 necked down for the 6.5mm bullet; or the part where it "stretches" the brass, technically all rounds fired expand. So will move on to another builder, any builders you guys could recommend would be great!

Where about in Wisconsin are you, I know a guy I could try and put you in touch with. Gun smith just south of Madison, never talked to him about building me an AR but he's done other things for me

I'm north of Madison about an hour, but family is south of Madison so I go through it frequently. Would appreciate getting in touch with someone that you recommend.

And this is my first time actually posting in a forum, so the whole posting in the intro section went over my head. I'm technologically challenged, but put a firearm in my hand and it's as if it was an extension of my arms. :P

He's in evensville just west of Janesville, I see his email is on this Yelp.com listing maybe try emailing him? They're a small shop and he can be hard to get ahold of but he'll get back to you (I've always called).

So after looking around a little bit more, I'm thinking about using an Aero Precision M5E1 upper with the M5 lower for this build. Cost wise I think it will keep it down while giving me the tactical look I love and not sacrificing on quality and fit. Then I will just find a good .260 rem barrel and put a JEC Customs Quick-brake on it.

The build should cost less than $1600.

Any thoughts?

Yeah I noticed when I went to buy a receiver set that tons of stuff is either out of stock or just nonexistent even though I know the company sells it. That's why I am just taking my time and looking around more... that and I have a newborn so wife is reluctant to let me spend so much even though I know she will give in when the time comes. lol.

Do you have the link to that thread?

lol. you know, I would/will, if it ends up costly less to build than a similar Aero Precision gun... but don't exactly have the motivation to price the rest of it out right now. haha. day off and having to deal with a newborn and a toddler, plus my mother. lol. just takes everything out of you.
