From the looks of it, that is after it has been cleaned up and worked on. I would suspect it was crushed or possibly a car/motorcycle wreck. The guy with the wound took a round from his partner at near point blank, from behind. The story goes on about muzzle awareness and trigger finger placement. I don't think I really read the article.
