gsmopar Posted September 17, 2013 Report Posted September 17, 2013 Would there be any reason that my gun would jam (FTE) with 7.62, but not with 308? My 308 ammo is higher quality, but I just want to make sure that I'm not missing something. I've tried multiple brands of the cheap 7.62, all brass case, and used both DPMS and PMAGs. Thanks, Greg
seasprite Posted September 17, 2013 Report Posted September 17, 2013 If its a DPMS look on the bottom of barrel and see what chamber they have stamp on it then report back.
survivalshop Posted September 17, 2013 Report Posted September 17, 2013 FTE could be lower powered ammo for your set up . Commercial 308 is generally at a higher pressure. You should not have a problem with one or the other , but some surplus ammo may not be the same quality as made in USA commercial .
gsmopar Posted September 17, 2013 Author Report Posted September 17, 2013 Quentin Defense lower, CMMG upper, Tubbs BCW, Heavy Buffer, PRI Brake, CMMG Lower Parts Kit, DPMS tube and stock. I've used multiple brands/grain 7.62 (Winchester, Privi, and PNC). The Winchester jams the least from the cheap stuff. I've also used multiple brands/grain in 308 and NEVER had a jam. I think the lightest 308 was a 160, and 147 for the 7.62.
seasprite Posted September 17, 2013 Report Posted September 17, 2013 If this is a new build try oiling the bolt and carrier to the point thats dripping with oil. You can't oil them enough when your breaking them in.
gsmopar Posted September 18, 2013 Author Report Posted September 18, 2013 Not new, probably has 500ish rounds through it. Can I be creating an issue running the Heavy Buffer in conjunction with the Tubbs BCW?
seasprite Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 Your just step beyond my experience one of the other guy's will help you on this. I have no experience with the heavy buffer & Tubbs BCW. But don't worry theres a couple of guru's on here.
gsmopar Posted September 18, 2013 Author Report Posted September 18, 2013 This is my next attempt at cheaper AMMO. I'm headed out with some friends a week from this Friday and will let you guys know what happens.
Rsquared Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 That's actually decent ammo. My Armalite's never mind chewing up any of that stuff. Pretty clean firing also. I mean.....c'mon....it's Federal stuff. ATK (the parent company) is a MAJOR military contractor. They run the Lake City Arsenal (and others) by the way.
gsmopar Posted September 18, 2013 Author Report Posted September 18, 2013 I just read through this thread and am still a little confused. My barrel is stamped 308. Could this be my FTE problem?
Rsquared Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 Try the federal stuff. That's pretty generic ammo. Good stuff. And oil the S H I T out of the carrier. Make it drip......just to see. See if that makes a difference. All we can do is take it from there.
seasprite Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 I just read through this thread and am still a little confused. My barrel is stamped 308. Could this be my FTE problem? Yes, DPMS runs tighter chambers on the .308 barrels. Your pretty much stuck with .308 ammo no 7.62x51 or feeding problems will result.

seasprite Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 Oops For some reason I was thinking you had a DPMS barrel on there. Must been when you said you had a DPMS tube I took that as slang for the barrel. As far as the CMMG goes I don't know <dontknow> if you don't get an answer here give them a call or shoot them an email and ask if there .308 chamber can handle 7.62x51 nato.
98Z5V Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 Not new, probably has 500ish rounds through it. Can I be creating an issue running the Heavy Buffer in conjunction with the Tubbs BCW? Possibly. Leave the CWS shell in there (it weighs almost nothing), but pull the weights out of it, whichever you're using (the steel or the tungsten). Shoot it with the heavy buffer and just the shell, and let me know how it goes. <thumbsup>
MikedaddyH Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 Not new, probably has 500ish rounds through it. Can I be creating an issue running the Heavy Buffer in conjunction with the Tubbs BCW? Take the carrier weight off and shoot it. The carrier weight is used to compensate for a more powerful/hot load to slow down the BCG during its cycle. BTW run it wet !
shibiwan Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 (edited) My barrel is CMMG. My CMMG MK3 (bought as a complete rifle) is marked .308 on the barrel and shoots 7.62x51 just fine, including the Federal (LC) XM80C NATO. CMMG does advertise that it is fine to use 7.62x51 and it is marked 7.62 on my receiver too. I DID have one problem with RELOADED Lake City NATO brass. Seems that about 50% of one batch with LC 08 headstamps didn't quite fit in the chamber right and the bolt could not go fully forward to fire. They basically jammed in the chamber and I had to pry back the BCG with a screwdriver to get it to even eject. My assumption was the reloaded cases were not quite correct. Everything else seems to work fine. Edited September 18, 2013 by shibiwan
gsmopar Posted September 19, 2013 Author Report Posted September 19, 2013 I got a reply from CMMG and will try playing with the BCW and AMMO types on the next outing. Here is my reply from CMMG <thumbsup> : Greg, Your upper is chambered for 7.62 NATO rounds so there shouldn't be an issue. I would suggest trying to find a better quality ammo to try in it. If you are still having issues after that we may need to check the chamber out for you. Thank you,
