flyingbfarm
Looking for feedback about building a 14.5" 308 ar, will be using a Rainer Arms ultra match bbl when back in stock. Plan on using my AAC SDN-6 when my paperwork clears.. What do y'all think about accuracy, efficiency and so on trying to build one that is light enough to pack up and down the hills and hollers of southern KY. Thanks, Mike
98Z5V
What is the max effective range that you think you'll need to engage a target at?
flyingbfarm
under 400 yds I think it is more of the fun factor than anything I am looking at a dpms gen 2 recon today

Dane Armory
Only advice I can give you is to NOT mount the barrel on the Upper Receiver until your BAFTE paperwork gets back to you approved ! Exception unless the muzzle device is welded on the barrel and measures 16.0" Edited February 5, 2014 by Dane Armory
Rsquared
^^^^ Advice to be followed. 308 SBR = big grin. 308 SBR w/suppressor = bigger grin on shooters face. As far as SBR's in this caliber......................... 12.5" AR-10 and an 11" FAL.
98Z5V
A 14.5" 308 barrel will be EASY to get to the legal 16", with a pinned muzzle device. EASY. Most 308 muzzle devices are long as hell, anyway. Making a legal 14.5" pinned setup wouldn't take too long at all - and it's not illegal to own a barrel that's under 16". Robocop1051
The BABC makes a 14.5" bbl into a +16"
flyingbfarm
Will be pinning the flashider/muzzle break for it to be the legal length. I know it will be loud, my socomm16 was loud. Still thinkin, the more research I do I might go with the Ruger gas piston as far as a suppressor gun thanks for the replies
beachmaster
I personally highly recommend the GII ;-) I will get a review up soon. Although I havne't put enough rounds through it to have alot of credibility, I can say it has never hickuped, and it is light.
shibiwan
So technically, if you follow the letter of the law, putting a short barrel on an upper is not against the law. It's against the law if you mate it to a lower receiver... or did I get that wrong?
unforgiven
I think it's a problem when you add a stock or fore grip on on short barrel upper.
beachmaster
Since the upper is not serialized, if not attached to the lower, it could technically be used on a pistol.
lakeracer69
If you have a rifle lower and just "have" the SBR upper it could be construed as "intent" and "constructive possession" by the alphabet boys. This topic beaten to death on many forums.
Toolndie7
I believe this article was shared somewhere on here before. But if not.. http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2013/10/daniel-zimmerman/the-truth-about-barrel-length-muzzle-velocity-and-accuracy/
beachmaster
That is a good read. Depending on what you want, if the object is simply weight, the GII ap4 might be worth considering. Its 7.25 lbs! The recon is 8.5, which isn't really that light, but im going to see if I can bring that down a bit by simply replacing the handguard. A GII ap4 with a ff forend and 14.5 inch barrel would be pretty cool! You might be able to get the weight down to 7lbs flat! The midwest industries ss gen 2 rail in 7" I believe weights just over 7oz, which is the same weight I believe as the plastic glacier guards.
