Hornady Superformance Ammunition in Gas Operated Firearms
survivalshop replied to imschur's topic in Ammunition
Yes , the weight of the projectile will produce differences in pressure ,but you are probably right about it being mostly about the propellant & its pressure spiking or pressure curve . Which may be why it may not be good for suppressed applications . If you read into into it , you will see that some of the problems some are having with brass deformation can be caused by the loads & what type of gas system is being used . Some here should take note of that. -
I finally got the proper height scope mount for the 300BLK & can do some real target shooting to see what I can get out of this cartridge. Not having the proper height ,Really screws things up. I put a Burris P.E.P.R mount on & will use the Bushnell 1.5 X 4.5 X 32 , scope , an old Turkey scope I had on one of my shot guns. Its what I have been using & what's good about it is the low power for CQB ( close quarter hog battle). I am hard to fit a scope properly , my cheek weld or old eye sight , is not a good match . I had to ditch the Magpul BUIS , because even this mount is too far back to permit use of them , but man is it nice to bring up the rifle & have a perfact sight picture. Going to try to get to the range Friday & do some more Chronograph results with the 135gr. MK's, Will put up some photo's & target results when done . And all brass will be Rem. ACC 300BLK , I went over & over them again ,so I don't have the same problem as last time . Some will be reloaded with Rem. 7 1/2 Bench rest primers & will give separate results .

Hornady Superformance Ammunition in Gas Operated Firearms

That piece of information is good for a lot of things, besides just that particular type of ammo. -
As was said above, you can get a new or used AR 308(or any other cal. ) with less money than you can build ,but when you build ,you make it your way . While you can generally hunt with any AR 308 , with few mods. You also have to remember weight of a AR 308 is going to be more than most bolt actions . If ya want to build one , we are here for ya , read up on the builds here.

If you think some thing makes you feel less recoil , than go for it . Nothing wrong with that ,that's for sure . The problem I see as I have already stated ,is that once you fine tun the rifle for perceived recoil , you run a large risk of function problems . Of course most of the rifles here will never see combat , some may see hunting conditions & if its going to go wrong ,it will when your out there in adverse conditions. A safe queen or Sunday target plinker , well probably not give you much problems. They are generally cleaned & are used in a controlled environment. I have never used any thing , but stock type buffers & springs in any AR ,being a select fire or semi auto , in any rifle I have built . The std DPMS , 308, carbine buffer I have in my 308 carbine , works with the std 308 spring or the Tubbs spring . I can say I believe it is smoother functioning with the Tubbs spring in there , but I have never had a problem with std springs or buffers . I only use M16 BC 's in the AR15's ,I build. If you look at the 308 BC , its just a large M16 look a-like. I like the Superior shooting systems spring (Tubbs ),It has some features that should be in any recoil spring ,that's used in all types of rifles that use them. As an example: I wish they made them for my REM. 1100. I have a heavy recoil spring in there for slugs & 00. With that spring in there ,I can't use much other ammo , it will fail to extract , but felt recoil is lessened with slugs & high pressure loads & I know its not scientific ,but others with similar shotguns say they can feel it less with it . That shows I have made this shotgun very ammo specific . It was my goal , to keep from punishing an old shotgun & still being able to use it for hunting . This is no longer my primary hunting weapon, she's a back up . Since we don't have the specialized equipment , all we can go by is how it feels when changing from one spring/buffer to the other . The more you lighten these rifles up , the more felt recoil they will have . I always think about that when I shoot my M1 Garand(wish it was heaver-er,LOL. I for one will buy & use more Tubbs springs.

The $ , was why I never bought a Fifty & I had my eye on a Ma deuce , when I was a class three & you could get them for cheap. It was all about the price to feed it . I can't imagine one costing more to feed ,but hay , at least its not belt fed.

Brownells Considering Ammunition Sales
survivalshop replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
I filled it out ,but I don't buy much factory made ammo. Just having it available from them ,is a good thing . I get all my gunsmith's tools & supplies from Brownells. -
In my experience , the lighter weight BC's ,only add problems to a gas operated system. Unless the system was designed around it . Some people over analyze there gas operating systems. The piston systems can benefit from a simple gas regulating system , but not to control how easy felt recoil is . If you look at some of the good designed gas regulating systems are used ( FN -FAL ), they are used to operate the system with a certain cartridge or make sure they work with extreme fouling from combat or extended shooting extremes . The whole purpose of the BC is to not just slow the unlocking of the bolt for proper function , but to also make sure there is enough inertia to strip the next round from the mag. & also have enough to lock the bolt . Striping a round from a mag. , slows the BCG down ,quite a bit , I 've seen some stop the BCG in its forward motion completely . The buffer spring buffers the rearward travel of the recoiling BCG & on doing so uses its compressed spring to launch the BCG back into battery. By lightening the weight of the BCG , you will lose a lot of inertia & that can cause feeding problems. In the same sense , the lighter weight can also cause extraction & ejection problems. ( unlocking prematurely ) These components are miss matched more than any parts on an AR type rifle . I went to a Tubbs spring because I thought I was having problems with a specific brand of ammo , come to find it wasn't the spring , but the brand mag. & lower receiver tolerance stacking. The brand mag ,just doesn't work with this receiver , where all others do. I can say the Tubbs spring ,does help in the recoil , a little & keeps a longer lock time ,which may help if you think you have an over gassed system. ( that also opens another can of worms )

Y'all really need to get into who's making these bills up & go after them in the voting booth . Are the trying to make another Commiefonia ?

Except they kept the Harley Davidson name . Kinda makes you wonder whats really going on . One company( Cerberus ) trying to eliminate the competition ? -
I like how they give dimensions of the mount . I sometimes go through a couple of ring sets to get the right height for my cheek weld , even with a measurement( & all the ring sets I have laying around ). With some manufacturers you have to do a lot of searching for a good measurement of scope height of a ring .

Well its been a month & no pin . I might want to remind them ,but when some one says you are going to get something free of charge ,I generally don't like to bug them . I had to turn down one of my spare 308 pins a little to fit it into the smaller pin hole on the far side of the bolt release. I was having problems with my ambidextrous bolt release not working & traced it to that pin was binding the bolt release enough for the ambo. release not to work . (it works by spring pressure alone ) Works fine now .& if they send me a pin i'll swap it out to have it all POF.

I saw that stuff the other day .The 700 rec. intrest me , but I have to put a grand into my Ultra Classic first & they will probably be gone by the time I has the cash. I'm not sure I like that fancy receiver & hand guard set up .Looks like it would make the 700 as heavy as my 20",308, AR.

Ya & you don't have to worry about the bullet hitting the or swiping the inside of the can, because of improper alignment. <thumbsup>

Well try to use the number "15" in making or an "AR" on a rifle & see if you get sued. I have no hand in this circus & ya this guy may be a butt head ,but this is the way most of these co. work . Yes his stuff may be scrap & some one came up with a better mouse trap , but co.'s sue for infringement all the time ,because this one is about products we use ,its big news . I'm not defending any one or product ,I'm just a bystander watching the show . Its not about a bad product , we all know you can have bad runs on any massed produced product & I don't even need to post any examples .

I believe I figured out how that cut down LC brass got in the mix. It had to be a loaded test rd. left in the cartridge box & I didn't notice it . This can be the only way ,because I didn't prime any ,they were already primed from the factory. I loaded the 300BLK on my Dillon & I use the 100rd MTM cases for hand loads. I must not have noticed the one test rd. still in the MTM case & just put the new reloads in there & didn't notice . I only had 99 REM. 300BLK brass because one had a very badly deformed case mouth & it couldn't be salvaged.(dented ,probably from shipping ) Just goes to show ya ,you can never let your guard down when reloading

I think any thing that's" rip stop" is light weight. I used to use the old Rip stop BDU's in woodland camo. I gun hunt in Ohio every year ,lived there my first fifty years of my life. The Gander mountain here sells some light weight stuff, you might want to look there.

Not fond of UPS ,Fed X , trucks! You need to train him better , those are GTG trucks & he should go out & pick your parts packages up . <laughs> I like my combo lock safe, makes me feel like a safe cracker.

I don't know any thing about the suicide story ,but there is always two sides to it & I don't believe too much in the propaganda print any more. I will say ,I don't & have not ever used a QR mount , I have no use for them . Not saying there's any thing wrong with them ,I just don't have a need for them . I will say that from what I have heard about the various manufacturers making them , that A.R.M.S. has a patent on them ,they were the first & they will fight to keep others from copying there product. The other mounts are just a copy's , maybe better ,maybe not, I wouldn't know . I do know a lot of PD's & such use them . The fun shop I frequent , uses them ( and he teaches SWAT )& explained the differences between them & why he uses the A.R.M.S. mount over the others. Just saying .

I have two boxers. (not the under ware ) When I bought my newest safe , it looked quite empty , now I need another , should have put a light in I guess , but oh well. They sure do make you feel better.

I just noticed, who that was that responded. Please do hang out ,your the main man as far as this cartridge is concerned & I apologize again for jumping the gun on the blame thing ,it is not a normal thing for me to do that . I for one ,as others here ,like the 300BLK & am getting to know it . I am not interested in the sub sonic aspects of the cartrudge ,but for a hunting cartridge. What is new in the ammo development ? My bbl. is a 300BLK from Wilson & when I get around to putting some good optics on her ,we will see how my load development works out .

Tubb CWS (carrier weight system) review
survivalshop replied to JMoto's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
We all know how funds can get in the way of things . I haven't seen a mid length adj. gas tube , but I have never looked for one. Some one will know here. As far a polishing the chamber , you don't have to over do it ,in the polishing . Polish a little & try it out , if it operates better do a little more ,until you are satisfied. If the chamber is properly head spaced ,the case will not flow any farther then is allowed by the chamber dimensions, that's what they are there for . Every match chamber I know ,that's a real match chamber , is final polished along with the barrel . -
My Bad , IT WAS NOT A REMINGTON CASE! After looking at it closely at home with out sweat in my old eyes , it was a cut down LC 5.56 case . How that one ,one of my test load brass, got into the batch of 99 other Rem. ACC 300 BLK brass is a mystery to me even now thinking about it. I scraped all my test load cases, do not under stand how this on got into my new brass & didn't get tossed. I apologize to all concerned , I can make a lot of excuse-es ,but it was all me , for jumping the gun with out further examination .

I have 100 Remington ACC BLK primed brass , that I just had a Chance to try out & with dismall results. I loaded 100 with the Serria 135 MK's & I reduced the load a little from my test loads & I had one of the Rem. primed primers fall out most likely in the mag upon recoil . The rd. didn't go off of course , so I ejected it into my hand & promply got a hand full of powder & looked at the case ,saw it had no primer & thought I missed one . Well it really screwed up my rifle & I had FF & FTE & got some of my new brass screwed up probably beyond repair . I disassembled the rifle & upon removing the BCG ,it had unburnt powder all over it & in the chamber . I don't remember how far down the twenty shot mag this was ,but it must have been dropping powder on the cartridges below it . No high pressure signs on the fired brass , so the rd's are not over loaded & this had to happen before the rd. was fired , New primered Rem. brass , WTF.

Tubb CWS (carrier weight system) review

I thought I was wrestling an alligator to get my Tubbs spring in my Carbine, so I know what you mean . As far as the bolt lugs , that's what I was thinking & sounds like they are OK . If you look at your once fired brass closely , with a magnifier , you may well see if there are imperfections with the chamber . Most use Flitz metal polish with a bore mope ,cleaning rod & batt. operated drill to polish the chambers up . Its quick & easy , if needed. You say your bbl. is dimpled ,meaning there cuts in the bbl for a set screw to detent into a recess in the bbl. or cross pins ? How different is the gas tube compared to the STD. ones ? There are reg. gas tubes out there ,not sure what configuration or sizes. We as fellow shooters & builders want to help as much as we can to figure your problem out .
