What he said makes no sense, since a carbine buffer is lighter than a rifle buffer, and would therefore perform better in an undergassed rifle. Point is moot since a 20" rifle gas .308 will not be remotely undergassed unless the barrel manufacturer drilled the gas port too small. You will be fine with a carbine setup. I also have a 16" rifle gas with carbine buffer and it runs flawless. Now you just need to decide which carbine buffer system you want to use like SS said. DPMS Or AR10

Just curious why you need that extra .75 on the total external length? Your stock will fit the standard milspec tube at 7.25 just fine. Its the internal depth that's important for function. A VLTOR milspec tube should still be those same dimensions. I have one at home, I'll try and confirm. If you are talking about the VLTOR A5 length receiver extension, it is a little longer internally but fits milspec sized stocks. Same length as the armalite AR10 carbine tube, and designed to be used with a special A5 buffer and spring on an ar15 rifle. I'd personally stick to the standard milspec extension with the standard 7" internal depth, and add the thick shoulder pad to the stock if you need the extra length. No point in rigging stuff with quarters or spacers if you don't need to.

All milspec extensions will be 7" on the inside and 7.25 total. That's the "spec" part of milspec. Order from a reputable place and those dimensions will be correct.

I have a bore laser thing, but seems pretty useless more than 25 yds. Seems like it always moves as I rotate it in the barrel like mrmackc says. I just pull the upper/carrier and look down the bore. I have 25 and 100yd reference points out my front door
