  1. Nnoooo...it isn't an accessory for assless chaps!! <laughs> Or is it? <lmao> Only $40k bro! Do it! Jon
  2. Welcome from AZ humboldt! Jon
  3. Okay...pretty cool. But if your 'chute doesn't work would you personally A: lay flat and splat, or B: head-dive and see how far you could burrow your body into the dirt? Jon
  4. As shooting goes at least I didn't have diarrhea to top it all off. <laughs> Felt kinda crappy the night before. Went to the shoot at 0615 to set up. George wasn't where he said he would be. Finally connected with him down on the range and we got up his KICK ASS canopy (like a miniature "one car garage" with steel-tube framing), tables and chairs. The first AS redhat showed up about 0645 but wasn't sure what to set up exactly. After a few minutes another showed and they started setting up a firing line. The shoot-boss, another redhat, showed up sometime after 0700, having driven down from Mesa. Shooters started filtering in about 0800. There was a very good sampling of people that eventually showed up...5 women, 2 boys, and 8 men (me included). To start off everyone was issued a Redcoat target and requested to shoot it how they felt most comfortable. I didn't do too good on that one. We then jumped into instruction, covering all the points of proper rifle marksmanship. After certain points of instruction, we would practice positions and techniques, then send a few rounds downrange. My increased crappy feeling was being amplified by crappy shooting. About mid-day, just prior to lunch, we set about to adjusting sights if we needed to adjust them. Actually, we'd been adjusting them for awhile but I neglected to bring any gun tools and it took us awhile to find a screwdriver that would fit my sights. When I finally went to adjust my rear sight, the fucker was loose...like 5-year-old loose-tooth sneeze-too-hard-and-it-will-blow-out loose. Got that fixed and started shooting better but then it was time for lunch. Lunch is spent with shooters eating, while instructors take turns telling us little-known history of April 19, 1775...the Battle of Lexington and Concord. And let me tell you, it isn't taught in schools because if it was We the People would be kicking ass of politicos on a regular basis! After lunch we went back to shooting and various drills for the rest of the day. While greatly improved with a tightened and adjusted rear sight, my crappy state of health was still deteriorating. Shot a 174 on the AQT (Army Qualification Target), shot the last Redcoat standing (sat on the first one) and did multiples better, not getting the 400 yard at all but did hit the head shot/"bucket". Alright! Came home, watched a movie with wifey (kid was still gone), went to bed and got up and down all night with fire-rrhea. Decided that was enough of a distraction to not shoot day 2 but did hang out as MSC representative. We produced no clear targets and got no riflemen scores...even the one redhat that shot missed out on the rifleman score. Even with all the great history we were getting, the best nugget of knowledge came from our 9-year-old shooter. When an adult asked why we weren't using bipods, he stated "Bipods are cheating!" <lmao> Seriously though, now for the excuses. I ran my Marlin 795, planning to run Liberty on day 2. It is wearing factory sights, the "old style" screw adjustable semi-buckhorns. The way the range is oriented to the sun I was getting glare off the front blade AND the rounded part of the rear sight's ear, producing this glowing haze that obscured the smaller aiming points on the target. Not that it would've made much difference with the sight loose. We were able to "black out" the sight a bit with a pocket lighter but nobody had matches or something else. Ordered a set of Tech Sights' peep sights this morning. The plastic buttstock plate kept slipping while in prone. Couple this with the new nylon quick-adjust sling and I was ill equipped. Going into my kit are multiple tools, a little jar of Testor's matte black model paint, and length of non-skid tape (saw someone else had some on their Ruger 10/22). Also going to replace all my shooting slings. All in all it was freakin' awesome!! Jon
  5. Forgot...a set of Tech Sights. Jon
  6. Still not here by brother! Due to arrive this week. Jon
  7. Wait wait wait...got another one. I was longing for the days of working for minimum wage and having no money but didn't want to do back breaking manual labor, so I bought a 308AR to feed. <laughs> Jon
  8. I understand that...getting ready to split now for setup. I'm looking more forward to shooting with someone in the pink bunny suit from Frederick's! <lmao> Jon
  9. Got my Marlin 795 ready to go with its new sling, stoked for the Appleseed Shoot this weekend. Then Tom said he can't make it...talk about flaccid. <laughs> We're making plans for everyone in Arizona to get together next weekend or thereabouts. Lookin' at you MikedaddyH and Blue109! Prepare for some Vitamin B! Jon
  10. Back when I had better eyesight and less money, no they weren't. Now tritium is pretty kick ass! Heine Straight-8s! Jon
  11. Liken it more to .300 Blackout than a .416 Rigby. These aren't going to be starting at 2,700fps. Depending on weight of the projectile, there is a performance shift between lighter (standard 147-168gr) .308 bullets and the heavier (180gr+) in the midrange, where Newton's laws come into play. From info I've found I should be good on it. As Tom mentioned earlier the big issue is magazine restrictions. RRA has noted this on their website for the cartridge OAL for the .243 Winchester and 7mm-08 uppers that they offer, suggesting the use of their polymer magazines which have a longer internal rear-to-front than the stock FAL mags. The longest OAL I can find for any of these cartridges is 2.850" for a heavy .243 load, 0.050" longer than any .308 OAL I've found thus far. Jon
  12. I was given a couple of packed boxes of the stuff. Works very well! How much was it on LG? Jon
  13. What would be really embarrassing is losing the pot of $10 bills to a guy wearing pink bunny slippers and ears. And, by the way, I thought it was supposed to be a pink onesie like the kid in A Christmas Story was wearing? Jon
  14. I looked at the recommended OAL on a lot of these. I think it is doable in the semi-auto. If not I'll be forced to buy a bolt gun, simply forced...against my will. Jon
  15. Sweet! It has been many summers past since I've been on dunes...ATVs were yet to be invented and ATCs were all the rage. As to the title of the thread, Tom, I thought that was an explanation for the $10 bills and the bunny suit. :o <laughs> Jon
  16. Ok...maybe I missed something. WHY is he forking over $10 bills? Are you going to be lap dancing as an easter egg? <lmao> Jon
  17. To boldly go, where no man has gone before! <laughs> Actually I want to experiment with retained energy downrange. I mentioned this to a friend of mine, then the next time we met he said that certain groups in the military are now looking at heavier projectiles in 7.62 for the same reason. It isn't easy being ahead of the curve. <lmao> Jon
  18. Hearing protection and (nothing to do with certain bad influences here) 1 Magpul PRS, and 2 Mech Armor TacOps-1 charging handles. Jon
  19. Got an order coming from MidwayUSA of .308 reloading components! As stated previously, the pills on their way range in weight from 190gr up to 210gr, from 4 different manufacturers. All are "hunting" bullets with a boat tail base..."splat factor" is a consideration. After this weekend I should be able to do a good multiple-distance accuracy tests...will probably go ahead and order a PACT Chrony. Any input on which model will be appreciated. Jon
  20. RJFOC308, welcome from Arizona! Those ol' boys in Alabama like shooting...hit 'em up and find out where they go. Jon
  21. Bullets, dies, decapping pins. Jon
  22. Had a '87 Ramcharger with those long things running under the sides...I called them "anchors", because they grabbed rocks you were going over. Jon
  23. Not me, sorry. But how's the beard project coming? Jon
  24. Welcome from a Kentucky-decendant Arizonan! Where abouts do you hail from? Jon
  25. Not at all. The reviews I've seen aren't very favorable for the Christinis. Jon
