Increased gas port due to short stroking
jtallen83 replied to SolidBuilt's topic in 308 AR - What You Need To Know
Were you ever able to adjust the bleed off far enough to stop function? I was never able to get the bleed off side turned up far enough to stop function on a 308 like the directions call for. You should be able to use the restrictive setting side to adjust your gas down. -

What do you have on order or in the mail? Part 2
jtallen83 replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
I remember when he started focusing on 22's, my brother-in-Law got one of his 10/22 builds in the early 90's, back when it was a walk in shop. Kind of a drag now since they got big they stopped doing retail in Carrol, I get it but disappointing they left us locals hanging, won't even help you with a part for their rifles if you go there, at least they wouldn't ten years ago. -
You are going to limit yourself on rail choice with the Armalite route. What is your reasoning for wanting the Armalite pattern? The caveat, "style" doesn't mean they interchange.

What I see here is they do both, work under one name and collect the benefits under another name or just plain lie on the paperwork, say they aren't married so the wife gets goodies. They have a very well staffed social services office here that guides them through getting the most from America in Spanish and many other languages. I hate the system but at least someone is working so the plants stay open, the younger whites were satisfied with the welfare so nobody was cutting the pork chops, it is MISERABLE work, they are bringing in east Africans now, the children of the immigrants that came here in the 90's don't want to cut pork chops, got educated and are leaving, their parents sell the house and retire back to Mexico and I get to shop an authentic African market in Denison Iowa while my property taxes ramp up with every new mark that buys a house for too much. For my little town I can pin the change on Reagan's amnesty, before that there were two Hispanic(Mexican) families in town, somewhere around the 25th anniversary of that Hispanics became the majority in my town, over 3,000, not on any official documents but all you have to do is look around to see it, check the school rosters. On a local level it's starting to change politics, we had always been a democrat/union town but as the Hispanic population increased with new citizen voters it's becoming more and more conservative, they are starting to put down their political marker and it ain't as blue as the blue team here thought, LIBERTAD First.

They will get an education all right, woke university will make sure they understand. I don't know if it's a different crowd that comes to my neighborhood or what but I've yet to meet an illegal that came off to me as needing educated...... at least compared to the professors I had, they required education.

Locating proper scope mount has been a pain
jtallen83 replied to BeeKay's topic in Optics & Mounts, BUIS,Sights
I had a QD version snap a bolt while shooting on a 308 6-7 years ago. They did replace the mount with a new one, no hassle and fast, I sold it though. -
Don't do it would be my advice, can't get that much for the dollar beyond airsoft stuff, that looks like airsoft to me. I don't know about the Sonora, if they have the Vortex warranty you will always have a working scope.

PSA has those Strike Eagles at about $360 with a mount. https://palmettostatearmory.com/vortex-strike-eagle-1-8x24-gen2-riflescope-w-ar-bdc3-reticle-vortex-sport-cantilever-30mm-ring-mount-2-offset.html Bunch of places have been blowing out the Bushnell AR series scopes in that range and cheaper, Primary Arms brand scopes are a good value for the money as well, lots of choices there. I am not familiar with the scope you mentioned, post a link so we can see the details.

People make a big deal about 1095 rusting but there you are using it in a very damp environment and it hasn't turned to orange powder, what do people think we did before stainless? Only had to put my Junglas to work a few times clearing paths around downed trees, worst one had a good group of people pile up so before you know it everyone wanted to take a swing with it, everyone was impressed with it and I didn't get blisters, hell of a "small machete"

Both my uppers are target models but love them, you really can't go wrong with an ArmaLite as long as condition and price are agreeable.

I'm sure it all made perfect sense till the wheels came off the ground

First aid kit straps to my ankle so technically not from a pocket. I'm twice as wealthy as @blue109, I carry a two cent piece, always at the ready with my 2 cents.

Good chance you called out your own problem in the first sentence, they have a reputation lets say. EDIT; I missed the 80% somehow, all bets off, I try to not comment on 80% issues.

I don't have this scope entered yet but Strelok gets me close for each load, and would get me closer if I took the time to confirm all the data, the youngsters get this schit quick, I'll let whoever is gonna shoot this permanently figure out what they want for a picture, more than one way to shoot, I'm told some like math and dials, those that do will have skills beyond me ..... 14 grandkids is a pile of scopes, hope this one will hold up.

Yes, for sure not a scope you want if distance is your thing, doubt your sniping many critters with it past 300 yards or so but it will get you close with some effort. I've yet to find a BDC I could just run with on a gun, seems to always be some adjusting to do at range, I tape on a little picture when things are set, Strelok helps me with the math to get there. I'm sure that out of the box combo is out there but for $219 I don't expect all that. I'm just happy I can have some uniformity across several rifles, if PA would have been further along with their optics when I started buying this reticle years ago I wouldn't have many Bushnells, their bdc turret for the 3-18 model is set up for a 155 gr. in 308?, same guy that figured 55 and 62 were close enough to each other I gather.............. PA has the reticle stuff happening in a logical way.

That's not gonna prevent whip, maybe change the harmonics. I've read articles that did testing with different torque values on muzzle devices and they saw issues with higher values not being as consistent. I would bump that up past 35 for sure, I've never ran one that low.

What do you have on order or in the mail? Part 2

Very interesting, I could make more things more grippy more affordably. Do me a favor, put a chunk on a small piece of metal and let it sit for a bit on a car dash or similar sun/heat soaked area, that's been the downside to the thinner stuff I run across, gets sticky, I've made a few sticky messes looking for grip. -
Barrel Prep - Polish Chamber? Lap Barrel?
jtallen83 replied to MaineMan2's topic in Building a .308AR
I've used a chamber mop and a real fine lapping compound on a tight chamber with good results, I really don't even look close unless there are problems with extraction or odd marks on brass. Never lapped a barrel. -
Brownell's made me bite on a one day sale awhile back, I see others are putting heavy discounts on this scope as well, not sure if it's the scope or the times but I'm scope poor so I rolled the dice. I have a first generation Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8 to compare it to, comparable value when I figure the mount came with the Vortex. Warranty wise I think the Vortex gets a nod, Bushnell says lifetime in big print then defines lifetime as 30 years in fine print, maybe Vortex does, I haven't read it but I sure never heard a bad thing on their warranty, no questions, Bushnell does that on only their most expensive stuff. Size wise the the Bushnell takes it, lighter, smaller footprint, the turret section of the Vortex seems massive. Illumination depends on need, if you do night vision then the Vortex is it. If you want the brightest then the Bushnell edges ahead, both dials felt fine for me and have off spots between settings. Both have the same really tight eye box at least compared to the higher tier stuff, still perfectly usable hunting scopes, I say closer to 3 1/2 than 4 inches on the eye relief for both. The reticles are very similar, I lean to the Bushnell but only because I and family have several scopes with that reticle, the nail in the sale for me. The Vortex doesn't have a lever, the bushnell has two, and they are a waste, if repeated fast changing of the zoom is something you will do I would warn you off from what I feel, it moves too easy and has some very clear changes in the pressure it takes to rotate, several changes through the rotation it feels sketchy compared to the much stiffer but smoother Vortex. It's not a true 1x but you can red dot with it like the Vortex, the Vortex might block just a tiny bit more vision with it's bigger turrets, maybe, they are the same on glass from my uneducated eyes, both are not the best at 8x, you get that fuzz around the perimeter, comparing to higher end optics now, don't think you are gonna get Nightforce or close caliber glass on either. The turrets actually feel pretty good and are easy to run with your fingers if you like spinning dials, otherwise the caps are pretty low profile, The feel of the clicks is very good, solid detent, audible click, easy to get the number of clicks you desire. The Vortex suffers greatly here, it is very mushy with only a hint of detent, it's challenging for me to just move one click or even tell if I did move a click, that said the Vortex has over 150 rounds of 338 Fed and once zeroed it had not been an issue..... until I went and got spin happy comparing them without thinking how much a zero costs in ammo......... turrets on the Bushnell were a pleasant surprise. I'll report back when it has some recoil under the belt. https://www.primaryarms.com/bushnell-ar-optics-1-8x24mm-riflescope-btr-1-reticle
