    Memorial Day

Kind of appropriate: We are getting a rental house ready to sell, and like any place, that has had renters for five years, there is a lot of stuff to do and a lot of stuff to clean up. We hired a fellow we know who is a really good contractor, and he brought two guys he had hired a while back to help us. Those two were awesome! They got more done in a day then my wife and I could do in a week. In appreciation I went out and got lunch for all of us. While we ate we talked a bit. Turns out one of them is an 11 year vet who recently got out of the Army. He was a combat engineer who did two tours of Iraq and a tour of Afghanistan, and was just getting back into civilian life. He and his wife have four kids and are settling down back in his home town. It was just a small encounter, but it made me once again appreciate our veterans and our servicemen for what they do, and what they bring to our country when they come back to civilian life. Without he and his partner’s help we would be up the creek getting this place in shape to sell. ???‍?
  3. I had the time when I was shooting suppressed 45 on the 25 yard range and a guy sits down at the next station with a 45/70 Marlin shorty lever action! I politely suggested he try the 50 yard range, and he said he couldn’t hit anything at that distance. ?
  4. Beautiful country.
  5. I seriously looked at that 716, but your problems with it cooled my interest. Adding a piston to a design that was designed for direct impingement never made any sense to me, although H and K was successful at it along with a few others. Have a piston AK and had a piston AR180, by necessity those piston designs need to have looser tolerances, partly so there are places for exhaust and residue to go without fouling the action. You get a super tight piston design like the M14, and it needs to be taken apart and meticulously cleaned and decarboned to maintain reliability. Guess the 716 is in that boat.
  6. I owned a polymer frame SP2022 Sig for several years and liked it, but was not overwhelmed by it. A so so trigger, and very top heavy, though well made and reliable. It was S and W 40,and probably would have kept it if it had been 45 ACP. But though it was a big pistol, it had a very small grip, which caused me some problems. All in all I would give it 5 or maybe 5.5 out of 10. Well made, but the ergonomics were questionable, and I did not particularly like the caliber.
  7. Amen. That is one rifle I will never sell.
  8. Doubt if they would fit the “B” models. The Gen 2 mags have a slot running the full length of the back of the magazines. These have a short slot at the top like M14 mags. I ordered some non Armalite mags from Schittier Than Dirt one time that were advertised as AR10 magazines and they turned out to not fit and looked similar to these but were 20 round. Almost thinking someone might have modified some M14 mags or something. Plus 30 rounders would make for a heavier than hell rifle.
  9. To a CEO of a company trying to stay in business, keep his employees being paid and caring for their families, and keeping the shareholders off his or her back, Standing on principal can be a luxury at times. Well said Matt

  11. Back to thread: one thing about politics; the other party will eventually get into power. If it doesn’t we have ceased to be a democracy, period. So to protect our 2nd Amendment Rights, firearm owners need to understand that the issue of gun control will come up again and again. What is going to drive any new legislation is the public’s perception of what is most important; the right to own firearms or the safety of my self and my loved ones? This wave of school shootings is working to change the public’s perception and not in a good way. As firearm owners we need to do everything possible to prevent that rising wave from reaching the tipping point of total or near total ban on semi automatic rifles and pistols and maybe on firearms in general. We can depend on the NRA and other groups short term to hold the line, but once that “not one inch” wall is breached, what is behind it? Firearm owners need to be planning for the battle based on the political climate 5-10 years from now and act to defuse the current growing resistance to semi automatic rifle and pistol ownership. To do that we need to 1. Reduce these school shootings by Working on effective ways to keep firearms out of the hands of people who should have absolutely no access to them, whether it is effective enforcement of existing laws and regulations, or promoting stronger barriers to possession by people who have violated laws or found to be dangerously emotionally unstable. For that reason I support exhaustive, thorough back ground checks on ANY one who purchases a firearm from anywhere, and the rights of LEOs to remove firearms from individuals who are exibiting dangerous behaviour. 2. A National Firearms (or semiautomatic/pistol license, or whatever you want to call it,)makes sense. As 98 has put so well, in the NFA administration of suppressors and class III firearms, the framework is already there to do so. And might very well if properly done, be a benefit in allowing suppressors and class III firearms to more individuals. Whatever, the end product would be, it is the firearms owners of this country that need to lead and direct the conversation of how to prevent the mass shootings happening, because if we don’t we will be at the mercy of anti gun organizations when they get the political majority. And they will push for total or at least Commiefornia type regulations. We need to lead the discussion and action on how to have legal responsible firearm ownership in modern society, and how to prevent their misuse by disturbed individuals. Enough said.

With brisket, time is your friend and the preparation before cooking is critical. I do a decent, brisket, don’t think I am in Shepp or Wash’s league.

    Memorial Day

Wrote this six years ago, still true. ”The most valuable resource this nation has are the men and women of the Armed Forces. More valuable than oil, gold, diamonds, or anything else. It is the duty of our elected representatives to never unnecessarily send them in harms way for anything other than the protection of our nation. They keep their end of the bargain, we as a nation need to keep ours. Those who have fallen gave us living Americans the ultimate sacrifice. Today is their day, let us honor them.”

I won’t order lumber from a lumber yard unless they will let me inspect and choose it first. I did that one time at a larger venue and they switched a bunch that was warped and knotted. Truck got here, I took one look and rejected it. Called the city desk and told them I was taking the business for my new house to their competition. Next day I got the lumber I had originally chosen.
  19. Have at it! I know it will turn out good! I am going to order one from that place you recommended when I am ready. Will probably be PMing you for advice when I do. Got the barrel nut and torque wrench but I have never done an AR10 barrel before, just AR15's.
