  1. Depends on which great lake. With Chinook, "you are what you eat" is definitely true. In Lake Superior where the Chinook feed mainly on Cisco and Smelt, they are very good. Different from Ocean salmon, but quite good. In Michigan/Huron, I don't think they taste quite as good. Probably because their main diet is Alewives, which are not real high in Alpha 3 Omega fatty acids, so the fat content of the meat is lower. Best Salmon I ever ate were silvers I caught out of Ilwaco years ago. Next best out of the Talkeetna river in Alaska. I think the shrimp and squid ocean salmon eat give their flesh its distinctive flavor versus Great Lakes salmon.
  2. Welcome. I read your plans with interest. My only thought is if a true thousand yard rifle is what you are looking for, that distance between 700 and 1,000 yards is one place that a longer barrel may help, if only to extend the distance that your bullet is transonic. At shorter ranges, up to 600 yards, there are some good arguements that the 16 or the planned 18 inch might be better, because of fewer possible harmonics in the shorter barrel. There are some real experts on this forum who know a lot more about these trade offs in barrels than I do. Hopefully they will give their opinions. A lot of it will depend on the bullet/powder/primer combination you decide on to make that 1000 yard shot. From the sounds of it, you are putting together a weapon that will give you a good chance to do it. Good luck and keep us informed on your progress.
  3. Allright Shepp!
  4. I am guessing the plane was taken to be used in something like 9/11, and it either made it to somewhere like Kazhakistan successfully, or somewhere with a deserted strip, or something went wrong and it is in the Bay of Bengal. Also, don't count Russia, or possibly China out. Either has the capability to hijack it and make it "disappear, to use for something nefarious. As absurd as it sounds, who knows what Putin might be hatching in relation to his recent actions in the Crimea and the Ukraine. Think what a disguised civilian airliner with a nuclear weapon in it could wreak before it was discovered. If I was CIA, NSA, and Obama, I would be covering all the bases, until it is found.
  5. Gonna happen!
  6. My suggestion is first to check out Armalite's current pricing for new ones, which are almost always out of stock. Hit Gunbroker and the other sites to see what they are asking. Then decide how fast you want to sell it versus getting the highest possible price. Adjust the price down by 10% if you are in a hurry to sell. Consider an AR10 Carbine as well. You can use the same mags. And it is still incredibly accurate. The Sig would probably be a better choice if you are going to go suppressed. Also, you might consider getting an AR10 T carbine upper, which were on sale for a really good price, and selling the Super SASS upper on line separately.
  7. I Spent 40 years in corporate America. During that time I witnessed a degradation in the last 15 years of the decision making processes for projects across the spectrum. Whether they were software, construction, product launches, whatever. Inevitably it was tied to a complete disconnect between the people who actually did their jobs and successfully operated an organization, the Upper managers who usually didn't know the business as well as they thought they did, and the vendors or consultants who were the fair haired children of the above managers, yet did not have the hands on knowledge of the corporations own employees. Recommendations would be made, plans were drawn with orders for employees to slavishly follow or else, and the next year new plans would be instituted to try to fix the problems of the previous ones. The solution to these issues was invariably the same: Listen to your good employees, take and institute their recommendations, and acknowledge their importance to your success. Perform due diligence on vendors and consultants, and take it for what it is: Outside advice that is not necessarily the gospel truth. If I had two different recommendations, one from vendors/consultants, and the other from my employees, I would place far greater weight on the employees recommendations.
  8. Have you noticed the resemblance to Diane Feinstein?

    Grilling

In Wisconsin, propane went from $1.13 last July, to $2.63 on January 4, to $6.10 on January 30. It is now back to $2.75 / gallon. 40% of US propane production was sold overseas, a lot was used this fall for grain drying because of a wet harvest, leaving us very little to get through the winter. Compounded by the main propane pipeline being out of commission from October through December. Thanks Koch brothers.
  10. Sorry to hear that they are doing that. Wasn't that long ago they were reintroduced in Idaho and Yellowstone.
  11. Damn that sounds good. Wish I could eat bivalves.
  12. The Ojibwe in this area hold the wolf sacred, I don't know why, and discourage wolf hunting any way they can. Different tribes, different perspective.
  13. This and it looks good http://www.shop.ar15hardware.com/Alpha-Complete-Billet-M4-Upper-alpbilM4uprcomp.htm
  14. It isn't the protein that kills you. It's the complex carbs and refined sugars. Had bacon myself this morning. Name a food that bacon doesn't make taste better?
  15. Once I get it squared away, I will do an evaluation. It's due here tomorrow.

    Mornin 308!

Always liked oven mitts with Bikinis.
  17. Ahh... Roxy's! Done that myself.
  18. I think you will always be able to get "B" model mags, so just enjoy it. I have a very high opinion of Armalite Gen II mags.
  19. I know the wardens in this area very well. Good people, straight shooters. Working with them on a number of Great Lakes related projects. I have got no quarrel with them. Shepp, one retired one takes ten kids out bear hunting every year. Half with dogs and half with bait. A bunch of them apply for licenses every year, and he takes the lucky ones out. All 16 and younger.
  20. They call it the "A" model even though it's new, because it could use the old "Waffle " mags from the original AR10's if they were available since they had been around first, they got the "a" designation. Then Knights armament and everyone else went to that standard, and developed the lineage that has led to the 308 p Mag, the 19 rd DPMS mag etc., while Armalite went to the modified M-14 mag, and when those had problems, to the Gen II mag, which is now the B model. I am guessing the "B" model will disappear in a few years.
  21. Have you checkd the Armalite website tech papers? I would guess they probably have a write up on the modifications. You might also leave mrraley a message. He used to work for Armalite, he knows them well. Ps Welcome to the forum.
  22. Cheapest I have seen for a while. http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=AP308FMJBlue&utm_source=AIM+Surplus+Main+List&utm_campaign=ddb527a128-02282014&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_6870497a6a-ddb527a128-18560669
  23. Check it out next time I am through there. Glidden has the old world record bear on display, if you havent seen that. It isn't a very good taxidermy job however.
  24. Hemi from one Hemi nut to another, thank you. Took advantage of this. I have an old Olympia Plinker plus carbine that I wanted to convert to a flat top, and not break the bank on. This should do it.
  25. This picture was on the internet of a gal with her bear from near Hayward. Was 600+ pounds.
