  1. The original Heinlein was a man. Once he got to chasing pvssy, he was something else.
  2. Some day, the full story about .22s will come out. Meanwhile, there's this dude here in town with an FFL and all he does is broker ammo. 22s $50 a brick, and he's working on his retirement. Hm.
  3. Friends, I'm thinking real hard about investing in a Browning 1911-22 for concealed carry. I used to have a Ruger P95-DC, a decock-only, which I liked quite a bit. One thing I like about the Browning is that the safety won't engage unless the hammer is back, so basically, I can forget about the lever safety. I always pulled the hammer first with the P95, so no biggie. The double-action feature was long, slow, hard, and with my long fingers, a real pain to shoot that way. My concern is the grip safety. Is that thing gonna jam me up if I don't grip it right? Will it snag if I'm wearing a glove? Can I pull the hammer without my hand on the grip safety? This would be my carry pistol and the less I have to think about when I don't want to think too hard, the better it will be. Do you guys have any thoughts on this? I'm saving my pennies for a carry piece. You can find more info on Browning's 1911-22 at: http://bit.ly/OfLl2p
  4. I don't have a gun safe. I have a 'gun room' which is also my computer room. Within convenient reach, I have 12 rifles and 3 pistols within reach. Oh, and there's also the crossbow made from an automobile leaf spring. My woodworking tools are easy to get at, and the kitchen is chock full of knives. I like the idea that I can grab my stuff whenever I need, and will need some persuasion to make it harder to get to my stuff.
  5. When I was in Australia I got to talking to some guys about pig hunting. The way it starts out, someone says, let's have a barbecue. So a couple guys jump into a pickup truck with some pig dogs in the back. They drive out into the scrub until the dogs get excited. They stop the truck, the dogs jump out, and the guys follow the dogs. The dogs eventually run down a pig that's totally exhausted from running and the dogs hold the pig down by the ears. One of the guys takes a knife and bleeds out and dresses the pig right there on the spot. They go back with the carcass and have the barbecue. No guns involved. What that means is they have so many wild pigs running around that you can get one whenever you want a barbecue, it's like a trip to the store.
  6. would playing rap music get rid of them?
  7. We'll have Hillary after Obama. The curse will not come off any time soon.
  8. Smoked carp rules
  9. Tried to talk my buddy into getting a .308, which is the first step to joining. Then he somehow got himself a never-shot-before Marlin 30-30, for $40, that's not a typo. So he's a 30-30 fan.
  10. If you're gonna catch them pigs, better kill 'em quick or you're in big trouble. They're 'invasive species'. "DNR believes Mark has 70 "illegal pigs" being raised in violation of an invasive species order (ISO). Possession of prohibited swine carries penalties of up to two years in jail and fines of up to $10,000 per violation, so the state is asking for the maximum fine allowed under the law for raising what the state deems the wrong breed of pig." --Farm Family Threatened with $700,000 Fine for Raising Pigs, MarketWatch, July 8, 2013 http://www.marketwatch.com/story/farm-family-threatened-with-700000-fine-for-raising-pigs-2013-07-08
  11. "The Department of Homeland Security plans to purchase 75.1 million rounds of ammunition at a cost of $22.7 million this year" That's $0.30 cents per round. The government is getting a nice discount.
  12. Here's a target that I designed specifically to make sights more visible against the background: http://bestruger1022.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/gridtarget06.jpg It prints on 8.5" x 11" paper.
  13. Most of this ammunition will not be destined for foreign conflicts. Unless US Federal agencies declare war on each other, this ammo will be used for weapons intended for use against US citizens. This is not a novel concept. In the Civil War (also known as the War Between the States), Washington turned government weapons against the militias of southern states of the US. Government ammunition stockpiling at this massive scale would be prudent in the event that an armed rebellion must be put down by force of arms. It has been said that the government should fear the people. With ammo stockpiling and the increasing militarization of police forces, it seems that the government wants things the other way around.
  14. Is 6.8 big enough for hunting deer?
  15. I seem to recall a time when "having a Schwinn" was a big deal.
  16. One of the strangest things I've ever seen in my life happened in Canada. I was staying overnight at the Frontenac and part of the deal was you got to eat a buffet supper. The buffet setup was like half a city block long, with everything you can think of. And most people skipped all of it after the salad at the front. Then they went to the end, and the end was raw salmon, sliced razor-thin. They ate it in piles. Like Canadian sushi, I guess. Well, they were eating so much of it that I did, too. Raw salmon is pretty darned good! Although, gotta say, smoked salmon is awesome. Speaking of smoked fish, my grandparents used to live right by a river and fished a lot. Basically, all they caught was carp. My granddaddy got a smoker and started smoking carp. Smoked carp might be better than smoked salmon, no kidding. You gotta pick around the bones, but dang, I could sit there for hours sorting out that savory goodness.
  17. The obvious purpose of these ammunition purchases is to "be prepared". So you have to wonder, what is the government preparing for.
  18. I'm right-handed, but left-eye dominant. When I got my first bb-gun, around 5 years old or so, my dad -- a WWII Marine -- taught me to shoot with both eyes open. It was a total struggle to do that, and I mean, for years. I finally got the hang of it, and everything he told me about his Marine sniper training (all open sights) turned out to be true. It was all practice, practice, practice. When it finally started working, it was almost magical. I think the brain, or at least, mine, had to re-wire itself. Focus both eyes on the target, and the front blade/rear leaf are superimposed on top of what you want to hit. Like the sights are semi-transparent, but totally on top of your shot. Overall, I'd say that being left-eyed and right-handed, shooting with both eyes open was the only way I got good enough at shooting for me to be satisfied with my shooting.
  19. this topic was covered here:
  20. I already have my Maglula DPMS .308 loader--for a couple months now. I posted that somewhere else here.
  21. Here in Iowa we used to have very restricted conceal carry regulations. Then we became a "shall issue" state, and all that's required is that you prove you watched a video online and passed an online test on the video. Makes me nervous walking around knowing there's lots of people carrying and their only training is what they got on the the internet.
  22. Actually if there was a .308AR patch, I'd get several.
  23. She looks a little bit drunk. Or stoned maybe.
  24. In this neck of the woods a cop's pay is about the same as working at the pork plant. Better benefits though -- Teamster's Union.
