Pretty tough to compare the SR Gold to the SSA. The SR Gold and the SSA-E is a better comparison. I'm waiting for a Hi-Speed version to compare the SR Gold to.

That rollpin should need force applied to it to get it in place - which would keep it in place. Without having the whole bolt in my hands, the first thing I'd suspect is that original rollpin. Was the ejector broken?

Extra hardener changes the finish, but doesn't necessarily "make it more durable." There's some online instructions for the stuff that goes over that part of it. I don't heat parts before paint. Which Duracoat did you get - bake on or air-dry?
