98Z5V replied to charlie52usaf's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Rome, it is very, very good to have you here - welcome aboard, man! <thumbsup> -
Headed back out to the sand to hang out with friends, and do much of this... <thumbsup>

magpul AFG2 in Flat Dark Earth? Who has them?
98Z5V replied to TacBlade's topic in General Discussion
DSG Arms currently has them in stock, but I'm not sure what other vendors have them - check the site sponsors first, and see if they're stocking them right now. <thumbsup> -
Bushmaster ORC .308 barrel nut not aligned to the gas tube
98Z5V replied to BroncoAZ's topic in Bushmaster
That Magpul filler piece is made to fill the gap in the (5.56 designed) MIAD or MOE grip and the Armalite AR-10 lower receiver. It's not desigend to fit the gap on a DPMS-based .308 lower receiver. The gap on the DPMS-based gun isn't as big, so that Magpul piece would have to be custom fit (meaning custom cut-up) to fill a gap on the DPMS stuff. There's just not that much of a gap with a MIAD or MOE grip and a DPMS lower. DISCLAIMER - I'm talking about DPMS-manufactured stuff, i.e., DPMS, Remington R-25, Bushmaster, Fulton Armory... I can't vouch for the custom manufacturers of "DPMS-based" lowers such as Iron Ridge, CMMG, and others... If they all share the same external dimensions on the lowers, as the original DPMS lower, then the MIAD or MOE grip will look like the one in the opening pics of this thread: http://308ar.com/forum/index.php/topic,130.0.html -
Bolt Carrier Slipping off Catch
98Z5V replied to DocLarsen's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Doc, internal dimensions don't determine commercial vs. mil on the tubes - it's the external diameter of the tube that makes it one or the other. Mil tubes are 1.14" O.D. and Commercial tubes are 1.17" O.D. Mil and Commercial stocks are sized (internally) to fit that external tube diameter of the carbine receiver extension. Internal dimensions will all be the same, because the same parts have to work inside them. The difference in the diameters doesn't necessarily equal strength - you'd think the larger one would be stronger, but it's not. It's in the threading. The 1.14" Mil RE has external cut threads (stronger), and the 1.17" Commercial RE has internal cut threads (not as strong as external threads). Wall thickness doesn't really come into play here, as much as threading does. It's a "bolt strength" thing with the threading differences - I'm really talking about bolts, like hardware, and not like firearms bolts. No joke, brother. <thumbsup> EDIT - there's a Magpul chart/pic that shows the differences, but my hotel internet isn't cooperating with me right now - someone will post it, no doubt. -
Finished with my Build!!! Just a few pics for you!!!
98Z5V replied to TacBlade's topic in General Discussion
That's a damn good lookin' piece of hardware, TacBlade. Very well done. <thumbsup> -
What brand/type of ammo was loaded/chambered during these failure to fires? Does the firing pin protrude enough from the bolt face?

Okay, that LAR upper is from Rock River Arms. That's not DPMS-style parts, and could cause you some problems, if the rest of the gun is DPMS-based. I honestly don't have too much familiarity with the RRA 308 guns, and based on how different they are from the others is why I've personally stayed away from them. Not any kind of judgment about their quality on my part, at all - just the reason I haven't been attracted to them enough to try to put one together. Just understanding the differences between AR-10 platforms and DPMS-based platforms is enough to keep me busy. <laughs> Here's what RRA has to say about it: http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=451&CFID=106381829&CFTOKEN=14101763&jsessionid=f030cf254d2763245e58

Correct. <thumbsup> Since the ORC already comes with a carbine length receiver extension, the LMT piece should be a direct swap. I don't know if the ORC uses a mil-spec size or commercial size receiver extension, but it should be easy to measure and determine. If the O.D. of the tube is 1.14", it's mil-spec. If it's 1.17", it's commercial. The LMT stock is mil-spec sized.

Your account has been terminated and 100% of your pending commissions will be reversed. How is that part even legal? What kind of BS is that? <dontknow>
-
Did you alter the mags with the new followers? I know the new follower is necessary in the mag to make the BHO function properly. I haven't picked up these parts yet since I bumped the .22 lower on my priority list - that'll get corrected before too much longer.

DPMS 308 SASS Barrel and Gas Block Issue
98Z5V replied to imschur's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
My apologies, as mine is hidden under a 13.8" Troy rail, and it's securely packed up for a move right now. If the numbers don't come up by next weekend sometime, I'll be unpacked and be able to get some dimensions up here. <thumbsup> Lo-pro PRI .936 block on the Fulton barrel, standard rifle gas tube. -
Aaaaah, got it - and thank you very much for the explanation. Makes perfect sense. You can clearly see my lack of detailed knowledge on the Armalite side of the house. :o ;D I was thinking it was like the DPMS-based part. My fault, man...
-
That's crackin' me UP!!! <lmao> That's called "Karma," brother... <thumbsup> <laughs> I gotta wipe the tears outta my eyes, and my sides hurt - back in a minute... ;D
-
Haha! That's the spirit! Welcome aboard, man! <thumbsup>

I habitually fire like that, with trigger follow-through every single time. Very good point you bring up. I can certainly see how you could shoot this trig and have a recoil-double - it is that light with the 2lb spring in there. I definitely warn friends before they shoot it, and I make them dry-fire it a few times before loadng any live rounds. I absolutely love the thing like this. :o ;D
-
On the one BAD-ASS that I've got, I set it up with the regular (long) fat lever on the left side, and the short fat lever on the right side - completely out of the way of my right-handed trigger finger. <thumbsup> I'll be you an take a little off that lever you have, and you'd be fine.

Always download the latest forms directly from ATF. All the stuff for the SBR will go to Martinsburg, WV. All the info is on the latest forms, and they're pretty easy to read and understand - here's the first place to start - you'll need the ATF Form 1 if you're going to build it yourself (you would be the "manufacturer" of it), or the ATF Form 4 if you're buying a complete, factory-built SBR: http://www.atf.gov/forms/download/atf-f-5320-1.pdf http://www.atf.gov/forms/download/atf-f-5320-4.pdf

Damn, that is a good looking boomstick. <thumbsup> Very well done.
-
You did NOT mess around! :o I love it! This is my favorite way to build something up - immediately. <thumbsup>
-
That's good info, right there - on a safe assumption (I hate to do that... ;D) could we run the 4 1/8" rod on everything, considering it's still clipped into position? Would that work on all .308 AR upper receivers?
-
Very nice!!! <thumbsup>
-
The announcement of the intentions of the carbine contract/competition, along with the introduction of this rifle - way too much coincidence. There's a pretty big article in the latest edition of Army Times about this Colt CM901... Upper right corner...
-
Oh, shat - you know what you're doing... Why'd you cross over to the dark side of the .308 AR, man? Are you a spy or something?! ;D

Awesome news, Doc! You going with the upper and lower that I think you are? ;D
