The charging handle doesn't grab onto the gas key, at all. The charging handle grabs the flat on the top of the carrier, right under the gas key, right in front of the cam pin.

With the thumb screws loose, how much does it move front-to-back in the pic slots?

I've done this routinely on AR15s. One needed some pretty forceful "tapping," but it turned out to be one of the best-grouping ARs I've ever assembled. I'm certain the tight barrel fit had an influence in that.
