Marine0311Style Posted March 6, 2015 Report Posted March 6, 2015 I'm doing my first SR-25 build and my goal is to be shooting this baby at the 800. I'm looking at a 24" DPMS barrel on the brownells site. Medium Contour, 1-10 twist and muzzle threads of 5/8-24. at $350 http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/barrel-parts/rifle-barrels/24-308-dpms-med-rifle-gas-barrel-sku080001025-69784-112683.aspx Then there is this Aero Precision Barrel Same threading contour and twist but its a 20" at $300 http://aeroprecisionusa.com/aspx/store/productdetail.aspx?pid=191 any thoughts on what to do? What sort of performance can I expect from each barrel? is one better than the other? Again First build so I am definitely looking for advice
survivalshop Posted March 6, 2015 Report Posted March 6, 2015 Is this just a Bench rifle or do you plan to hunt with it ?
Marine0311Style Posted March 6, 2015 Author Report Posted March 6, 2015 I would like to be able to hunt with it if necessary. Is this just a Bench rifle or do you plan to hunt with it ?
FaRKle! Posted March 7, 2015 Report Posted March 7, 2015 I would like to be able to hunt with it if necessary. If that's the case go with a 16" barrel. It'll do 800m and be light enough to carry around just fine. How closely are you looking to replicate an SR-25, or did you mean SR-25 as a general .308AR term?
AdamO Posted March 7, 2015 Report Posted March 7, 2015 (edited) I'd recommend a 16" if you're going to use it as a hunting rifle as well. I was extremely weight conscious building my rifle and still wound up a little over 8lbs without optics or ammo. Count those ounces so you wont be be crying about the pounds if you plan on packing it long distances. ;) Edited March 7, 2015 by AdamO
Marine0311Style Posted March 7, 2015 Author Report Posted March 7, 2015 Ounce = Pounds Pounds=Pain right? and I said SR-25 as a general .308 term. got a big bonus coming in so why not buid some new toys right? Marine0311Style Posted March 7, 2015 Author Report Posted March 7, 2015 I actually found this guy today while snooping around for a good deal. Paired with the M5E1 Upper i think it'll work great. The Ares Armor lower will look weird on it though

bubbasks Posted March 7, 2015 Report Posted March 7, 2015 Wimps. Mines 14lbs w/o ammo and hike with it ;)
Cali_Ed Posted March 7, 2015 Report Posted March 7, 2015 Like the Internet trolls say, lift some weights and do some pt
98Z5V Posted March 7, 2015 Report Posted March 7, 2015 http://aeroprecisionusa.com/aspx/store/productdetail.aspx?pid=362 forgot the link... Your link was all fucked up - here it is, fixed: http://aeroprecisionusa.com/aspx/store/productdetail.aspx?pid=362 Match your lower with whatever upper receiver you're buying. Save yourself the pain. Stick with the same manufacturer for both. Mixing and matching different uppers and lowers on this platform doesn't always work well.
BLKSHEEP Posted March 7, 2015 Report Posted March 7, 2015 (edited) Welcome to the forum Marine... I'm unable to open your links. See the attached picture, click as shown & paste your links in there and they should work. Is this it? http://aeroprecisionusa.com/aspx/store/productdetail.aspx?pid=191 The 24" will shoot a little flatter but everything else about it sucks! I say compromise & go with an 18-20" Also I would not buy a 24" barrel in medium contour, the longer barrels need to be heaver to maintain their rigidness. Here's a compiled list of most companies that sell 308AR barrels. Edited March 7, 2015 by BLKSHEEP
98Z5V Posted March 7, 2015 Report Posted March 7, 2015 I fixed his link, brother - get with the times... <lmao>
MikedaddyH Posted March 7, 2015 Report Posted March 7, 2015 Get the 24" barrel from Brownels you wont be disappointed in its accuracy. It's heavier than the others but you're going to compromise no matter what you chose. The 20" barrel will shoot 800 yards all day long.

AngelDeVille Posted March 7, 2015 Report Posted March 7, 2015 I have a 24" barrel on my 5.56 marksman rifle, it's just a .750 ish so it's not too heavy, but the length is a bit much, I think I'm going to hack it down to 18" or 20"
shepp Posted March 7, 2015 Report Posted March 7, 2015 Wimps. Mines 14lbs w/o ammo and hike with it ;) Yea but aren't you Paul bunon's distant cousin?!?
bubbasks Posted March 7, 2015 Report Posted March 7, 2015 Yea but aren't you Paul bunon's distant cousin?!? We's kin. Lol
Rsquared Posted March 7, 2015 Report Posted March 7, 2015 I'd stick with 20" or less. But then again........I'm the SBR guy. <laughs>
