jrtMA
On this topic of painting/refinishing, I've read many different opinions but can anyone recommend from experience what should I do to prep a SS barrel for duracoat? Some say rough it up with steel wool or sandpaper. Also, my gas block is tight as can be without adding a layer. How do you handle that issue? Shibi, you sound way more willing with cerokating than me. Please post pics if you get around to it soon. It sounds like a big chore though. My artistic side is a bit rusty. I'm probably better off splashing mud on and rolling around on the ground with mine.
jtallen83
With a project coming in the near future I've been contemplating some of these same questions? I hadn't thought about the gas block, I was just assuming I would need to have it installed before the finish??? Just how far do I put things together before I Cerakote? Any good references for this would be appreciated.
edgecrusher
I'm still happy with the shake and spray duracoat. It's holding up with no wear. Prep was just degreasing. Coated my SS barrel just fine. Just mask the block area, or mount the block and mask it.
Robocop1051
I have a guy in town who does Kryptek cerakote. $150 for the upper and $300 for the whole rifle. He has a same day turnaround. I'm thinking of getting my next build done in Highlander.

edgecrusher
Why would you have to mask the block after it was mounted ? I wasn't sure if he wanted it to stay black. Otherwise put it on and spray. You guys shot one of my painted rifles when you were here. It's had about 450 rds since with no wear

Robocop1051
Sorry JT. He does locals only. He's not an FFL, so he can't accept guns in the mail.
survivalshop
Sorry JT. He does locals only. He's not an FFL, so he can't accept guns in the mail. If he is handling registered firearms as a business , he is flirting with a visit from the BATFE ! Doesn't matter if its local or not . Of course he is just borrowing the Firearm for hunting & it just happens he paints it to conceal it better from game animals <thumbsup> <laughs>
