I am considering an AR style in 308. I am down to 2 brands and style. Rock River Arms LAR-8 .308 X-1 18" or a Armilite AR-10 TAC 18". I know there are a lot of others to consider, but these two seem to fit my needs (or wants) and fit my price range. I would appreciate any input on these rifles. Thanks!

Welcome from Iowa!  I have to say get the Armalite, you will have a bit easier time with aftermarket parts than you will with the RRA. That said they are both fine rifles so you'll be good either way as far as reliability and accuracy.

Welcome to the forum feel free to start a thread in the intro section

unless you've got a line on a RRA on the shelf your in for a wait. I'm not sure what the wait is these days but last I saw it was a year or so. I pulled out after 8 months, I'm not good at waiting

Like Shepp, I started out buying a RRA 308, which is a mighty fine rifle. My friend Libertarian uses one in long range matches and does quite well. I got tired of waiting, and when an Armalite 308 rifle appeared on my LGS shelves, I opted for that. I have not been sorry and have since added a 16 inch barrel Armalite carbine. One thought: Since Armalite switched to the DPMS, KAC 25 magazine standard in their "A" models, you can now get an Armalite and swap magazines with a lot of other 308 AR' s if you ever decide to buy a second 308 AR of another brand, like DPMS. Can't do that with RRA as they use the FN style magazine. Having an Armalite "B" model I am locked into Armalite Gen 2 mags. Which is an excellent mag, but I can't switch them with DPMS, KAC, or other 308AR designs. A bit more flexibility with the Armalite "A" models, just sayin.

shetch. Glad to be here. I have shot hunted and reloaded for many years. I've had other auto rifles but this would be my first ar. 308 because i like to be different. I would mainly shoot targets and may a hog hunt. My biggest concern about any gun is accuracy and a good trigger. I really liked the RRA predator. I would have bought it, but I would really like a threaded barrel. (very considered that option  might go away next November) . To me the RR seams to have a lot to offer but everyone seems to have a thing about the FAL mags. Although I would be pissed if RR changed the mag design in 5 years or so.  I have read that most people are more than happy with the accuracy of the RR but I can't find out much about the armalite.

Hitting 3,000 rounds without one glitch, that is Armalite love! With my Ethel being so faithful I can't help but be true to her;-) I flirt some but Armalite will always be my first love.........

Yes we are with good reason my friend. RRA might have a slight edge in barrel quality, but even that is debatable. But the Predator is the 24 inch Stainless, isn't it? Don't think you can get anything that long in Armalite any more. Keep in mind it weighs a lot more and is front end heavy. Unless you are a US Military sniper level or DSM level shooter, doubt if you would discern any difference between the two.

nothing against the brands your looking at, but have you researched any others? JP rifles, DPMS, list go's on forever, I have been through a couple different triggers on AR-15s & eventually ended up happy with JP triggers for them, when I built my AR-308 I was disappointed with it in that rifle & got a Geissele SD-E 2 stage, it's on the pricey side but well worth it
